Do you want to close more deals to grow your business? Yes? Well, that’s great because today I’m going to break down a campaign you can use as a template that got an 82% open rate, a 45% click rate, and a 5% reply rate.
In the next minutes, we’re going to analyze a cold email sequence sent by Nadja, our Head of Business Development, that generated 80+ leads for our team. This campaign targeted startups who recently raised capital and the objective was to generate qualified leads. STEP 1 - First email Nadja started by sending a first email Here’s why it works really well: The subject line is relevant It refers to the news.
This shows that she did her research and that she keeps an eye on her prospect to stay updated on their activity. That’s why it instantly grabs the prospect’s attention. Imagine you've just raised money and somebody cold emails you with a "You're funded - now it's on you" subject line, chances are you'll open this message, right?
The first part is funny. She makes a joke referring to those unpersonalized and generic sales emails everyone receives. Plus, it shows that Nadja took the time to write the email.
The second part It refers again to the news, so it’s relevant for the prospect! Overall, this intro breaks the "ice" between you and your prospect, and serves as a hook so that they keep reading your email. Then, my favorite part, the personalized image.
To begin, it’s the first thing that the prospect sees when they open the email, it’s really catchy! Money flying everywhere! But most importantly, it’s personalized, meaning the prospect will see their face and their name just like this It’s funny!
Come on! If I receive an email like that and I see my face instead of Tony Starks’, and it says “Inès, making it rain”. I love it!
(and not only because I love money) It would make me laugh (and that’s not an easy thing to do) and you can be sure I would read the email. After that, Nadja tells the prospect how, on her previous job, she helped raise $15M Series A round. She shows that she can relate to their situation in a genuine way and that she’s been in their shoes before.
So, she might have the solution to their future struggles. It’s a good way to spark interest. Then, she ends with a CTA that is not as pushy, which is great for building relationships first.
In the meantime, she also provides value saying she would be happy to share the strategy they used that got them great results. What she’s doing is teasing the prospect and catching their interest, which boosts replies! STEP 2 - First follow-up Next, Nadja sent a follow-up to people who didn’t reply.
Follow-ups are so underrated but let me tell you a secret. More follow-ups = higher reply rate = more opportunities. The email was sent with the same subject line so it appeared under the same thread.
The first part of the email shows a bit more about Nadja. She shares her relevant experience again, so that prospects can relate. Then, she shares more personal details talking about her dogs which makes her sound more human.
This cold email becomes a “warm email”. She’s building a personal connection, she’s not salesy at all. She even adds a funny image presenting her two dogs and her cat.
It’s more informal and it creates a personal bonding between her and her prospect, because in the end who doesn’t love dogs? Who said B2B had to be boring, huh? She ends her email by stating three great arguments on why the prospect should talk with Nadja.
In short, she teases the prospect about the value that she can bring to them. Once again, no sales pitches, 0 talking about the product. Then, she added a link to her Calendly so they can choose a date and time that suit them best.
STEP 3 - Second follow-up The second follow-up was sent 5 days after the second email. This time, she changed the subject line. It adds social proof and highlights something that could interest the prospect which is booking more meetings.
In this email, she adds social proof by sending our case study featuring Zendesk that could potentially inspire the prospect's next campaign. This is valuable for them as it’s a campaign that got them 60% open rate, 80% CTR and 30 meetings booked. When you click on the video, you land on a personalized landing page featuring 2 things: A video with the director of South Europe of Zendesk explaining how they grew their pipeline with lemlist Another reason for the prospect to have a call with her Then Nadja's Calendly so they can book a meeting They can choose a time that suits them best.
It gives her credibility and builds trust with her prospect because she shows her work had success in the past with big clients and that she can truly help them achieve their goal. STEP 4 - Last follow-up Finally, the last email in this sequence was sent one day after the previous follow-up. She changed the subject line again making it personalized with the prospect’s name.
It gives the idea of a possible collaboration between the two of them. She added a personalized image. It nicely surprises your prospect and catches their attention because they will see their name on the coffee cup, and it’s not common!
Then, Nadja pitches the reasons why it would be cool for them to connect. It shows how beneficial it can be for the prospect too. She ends by directly proposing a date and time so the prospect doesn’t have to think.
It’s a yes or no question. The CTA is very clear and fast to respond to. This email sequence not only generated leads for lemlist, but also helped Nadja to build warm relationships with prospects.
Now you know what makes a killer cold email sequence: personalization, added value, social proof, clear CTA and following up! So go test it out! If you have any questions, let us know in the comments!
Bye! Subscribe or your next campaign will be cursed I'm not superstitious but I wouldn't risk it. .
