if you've watched any of my videos you know I like to reflect and learn and improve I also like to teach and share to make others lives a little bit better um 60's been I'm 60 years old uh just a few months and it's been a transition year for me uh no midlife crisis or anything like that but it's caused me to reflect maybe just a little bit more on my life I'm not young anymore 50s for some reason felt young but here I am in my 60s and one of the thoughts that came across
my mind uh last week was you know what are some of the life goals that I've had some of the paths that I've been on not really all stated goals written down goals but really Masters that I was trying to follow which ones of those do I consider a waste of time now um that I'm 60 so here's my list my hope is not that you say these are the right seven it's that one or two of these strike a nerve with you to reflect on to see if maybe you may want to make a
uh a change so that's the hope not that this is the perfect list this is Joe's list okay so let's jump into that number one uh waste of time goals having the best stuff cars house clothes things like that nobody cares okay few people are watching you I know a lot of times when you're walking down the street you think oh you're maybe a little self-conscious people are watching me what no nobody cares uh and if they do judge you about what you're wearing do you really care do you really value that opinion um you
know most of the clothes I wear like this t-shirt and gym shorts that I'm wearing tennis shoes you know I buy them at Sam's Club or some even secondhand one thing I don't buy secondhand is my Hoka shoes I love Hoka shoes check them out hok a yeah yeah I love my uh I spend a little extra money on tennis on my shoes that I wear um so another thing in in this stuff category I was thinking about do you own your stuff or do does your stuff own you look at how much time and
effort it takes to maintain a house and cut the grass and trim the trees if you own a boat you all know that gosh you got to use your boat every weekend you know cuz otherwise it's not worth having so you got this dictation of what you need to be doing every single weekend even though you may rather be doing something else stuff typically owns you you know one of the things that I'm I'm kind of known for is I drive a very old car it's 2012 Toyota Sienna minivan with 200,000 miles on it I
get a dent in it I get a bump in it you know I don't care I don't get it fixed my insurance is really low I only drive 2,000 miles a year in that and this is our second car my wife's car newer to 2022 um but yeah stuff typically owns you rather than the other way around so you know I really don't strive to have the best stuff best house best clothes uh at all number two um goal that is a waste of time for me these again these are me I want to remind
remind you of that uh having the most money or being the most successful someone's always going to be ahead of you you get the promotion somebody else is always going to be in the job higher than you and somebody in the job higher than that uh there's always going to be another mountain to climb even if you own your own business there's going to be a business that's bigger you own a $5 million business somebody owns A5 billion do business and somebody owns a $50 billion business happiness I believe comes from the progression towards a
goal not in achieving the goal so hey yeah you know do good work make good money challenge yourself make an excellent product be the best okay but making the most money uh I don't think is a good M marker for being you know a winner or whatever you want to say or most successful um you know one of the things I like to do here and you know I'm not perfect at all these things but I like to revise uh this one instead of trying to be the most successful have the most money I try
to compare myself to where I want to be in 10 years so this came from a Matthew MCC uh Speech some award he won he's an actor but he talked about I compare myself to where I want to be you know what weight I want to be what health I want to be in 10 years how much money I want to have in 10 years what is enough uh what relationships do I want to have with my family and friends in 10 years from my starting point you know you don't know everybody else's starting point
so but what I do know mine very well and I can set goals for myself um anyway number three being famous you know most of us you know in our teens thought about being famous and how cool that would be um you know and it's uh it's becoming less and L of a thought for me but one area you know that you know as an example where it sneaks its ugly head in is you know this YouTube channel I got I think 57,000 subscribers and uh you know there's 100,000 or so people uh tune in
every uh month different people but there's channels out there with a million viewers there's channels out there with five million viewers uh there's people doing retirement videos with three four five times mine uh they have great content but it's not the con exact content I want to put out I want to just tell my story I think it's a unique perspective and I think it helps people um and it's what I enjoy doing and it's not very timec consuming to do and uh it's having an impact so um I I'm I don't know I don't
know what to say about that but uh striving to to be famous um I just think is a uh a waste of time you know my career I I had a great career uh but it's humbling to see that if I would go out to the company that I used to work for it's a couple thousand people at this plant and um how many of them would even know who I was what job I had what accomplishments I had in my career I would say three out of four wouldn't know who I am uh but
my family and friends that's long term I I want to be just Joe to them I don't need to be famous I want to be there I want to be present I want to be present that's a very important Family Value uh in the family is being present for things not just sending a card not not just a phone call but being present uh that's what's important to me let's see number four goal being like by others I um my goal I guess is to now is to be respected by those closest to me like
would be nice um but if somebody doesn't like me that that's that's about them you know it's could be criticism of me and something I need to try on and see if I'm doing something wrong um but I recognize that there are people out there that uh may not like me uh some of you if you out there Express that in the comments uh but I I'd like to be respected for my values and my beliefs uh by my family and those closest to me that's really what I'm going for not hey uh boy there's
one person out of 100,000 that hates me and I've got to fix that um I'm fine with that I know there's people around this town that don't like me I I had a a responsible job when I was working and I made some tough decisions uh that uh people didn't like um I contend they were the right business decision they were they're treating people the fairest but that doesn't mean some people uh don't personally dislike me for that okay number five goal that I I just no longer have seen the entire world I like to
take vacations I like to travel but that's you know two to four weeks four weeks would be a very long vacation for us two weeks is about perfect for Lisa and I and we take three to five of those a year um you know I we like being home but we like to travel okay um my priorities are I want to be present as a dad present as a grandpa husband friend um I believe in quantity of time not just quality time so I that's that's where I want to spend my time I truly believe
I prove what's important to me by where I spend my time now I got plac I want to see some of you ask I want to I want to make a big trip to England Ireland and Scotland maybe one trip Germany Austria Switzerland maybe that's one trip those will be a few weeks long uh I like to get to Greece I like to get to Israel see the holy lands probably not for a while over there on the the latter Israel uh but those are kind of on my short list um I haven't made out
a list longer than that and you know I've seen them a lot of the United States the United States is fantastic you you could see so many things here you know Yellowstone is phenomenal um the coast of Maine is unbelievable we love going to Florida uh we're getting ready to go out to California I've been to Washington State been to Hawaii been to Alaska recently the United States has so much to offer uh but I've seen most of it there's four states I haven't been to and I'm not sure I'll get to them uh tell
me if I should go to these uh North Dakota Delaware um Connecticut and Rhode Island those are the four states I haven't been to and I'm not you know I don't need to check them all off but uh let me know if I should go to one of those if you're from those States or really enjoyed a trip there let me know where to go um quality time with my family and relationships is and and um is where I want to spend time okay number six waste of time goal okay this one I may need
to explain a little bit getting things done every day um I'm a type A personality where I like to accomplish goals this has worked great in school great in a career but I'm starting to learn to just enjoy the day uh today was a very nice day to go for a walk it was like 68 degrees this morning I took my granddaughter Everly um in the stroller she's 9 months old we I didn't get anything accomplished today this is my lone accomplishment making this video here um but I I don't have to get things done
every day and that was a sense of Pride for me for years and years and years and now that I'm 60 uh I'm trying to change that a little bit it's not easy number seven being right focusing on Perfection with this I'm I'm going to uh kind of quote somebody ah quote Loosely quote somebody um it's a story of Socrates he was a Greek philosopher and born in 470 BC he was um singled out by a person asked the uh Oracle of Deli uh who's the wisest in the land and the Oracle said hey Socrates
is the wisest and Socrates his response to that was you know the only reason I'm Wiser than other people are because I'm the only person that recognizes my own ignorance I don't know what I don't know every day I learn something new so it's hard to to be arrogant and um think you know it all so that's that's uh uh the quote I'd that's what I strive to be is to be inquisitive about the world I'm 60 years old I'm learning everything learning new things every day got a study group uh where we study history
uh this one this month is exciting uh it's on Milton Freeman um who was a he's an economist uh won a Nobel Prize and uh he has a u a book called U what's it called uh free to choose free to choose I think it around 1980 that that came out plus or minus I'm not sure when it was but uh learning about how economies Thrive and and how the role of government in society so I it's exciting you know I'm excited about it go there you go there's my seven life goals that I at
60 think are a waste of time now okay not in all time for me right now uh do you disagree with this list okay do you have other things on your list that you think are a waste of time let us all know in the comments start a good discussion going just Che out
