Oh god. Michelle was struggling with her irons. Bad strikes, missing it right and left, and the ball flight was far too low.
And by the end of the session, she was hitting it out the center. She was hitting it a lot straighter, and she was hitting it twice the height. And the best part was we did it with two very simple steps.
Let's get started. Okay, there it is. So, that's a combination of both, isn't it?
the way you hit the ground a little bit before and it hooks. It's all about the right hand. That is the catalyst of all of your problems and maybe the left hand a little bit.
We'll see. But ultimately, look at the club face. As you move the club back, the club face is kind of almost pointing down inside the ball at this stage here.
What this causes is when you get to the top of the back swing, the club face is still very closed. We would ideally running, we would want running parallel to your left arm. So, see how you can see them lining up there?
Like 10, 20° off. Yeah, that much. Oh, okay.
As you swing down, the club face is strong. It's not super closed. So, you do a decent job of trying to compensate, but every now and then, you're just going to get one which is going to go massively left.
Our job right now is to fix the face, find out what's causing the face to be a problem, and then figure out what else we need to tidy up after that. Because fixing the face itself could be good enough. The issue is actually in how you are holding the golf club.
So your right hand is what we call very strong and too far under the club. Question. Do you play tennis?
Yes. Have you got a good forehand top spin? Used to.
Okay. Yeah. Cross.
Thank you. There you go. So you've got everything you need for tennis.
That unfortunately doesn't play so well for golf. So this right hand from here caused that club face to be closed. So, I'm just going to show us with a magnet here.
Just give us some ideas of what we're looking at. So, when that right hand goes like that, the club face. Now, we can see when you're going back, this is where yours likes to point almost very well, very much down at the ground.
Okay? In an ideal world, that club face would be out maybe more out there, pointing towards where Andy is there. Okay?
So, very strong there, very much up to the sky at the top of the back swing. And then on the way down, he gets close as strong as well at the moment. Also, if your club face is coming in very strong, the height could be a problem.
So, the height, I think, on these eight irons, Andy, what have we got on average there? 24 ft. 24 ft.
So, they're going in quite low. So, you're playing in the wrong country. If you're in Scotland, we're fine.
Just come and jump in here for a second for me. And just take your normal grip as it is. We'll get a nice closeup of that so we can show everybody watching this what it's going to look like.
I thought I did it right, but it's not far off. I think I'm cheating. I don't know.
It likes to it likes to go this way. So, this is where it's this is where the issue is. So, it's hard to see here, but there's actually a V formed between the thumb and the finger.
Your V is shooting out over here outside of the right shoulder. There we go. But now, when we look at this, between this thumb and this forefinger, you got this V, this line here.
It's definitely going up more towards that right shoulder. Yeah, this does feel weird. Now, from here, the club will look a lot more like this on the way back as opposed to this.
This is the killer. But here's the best thing and we we spoke about this. The golf swing is really good.
It's a really nice move. It's powerful. It's athletic.
It's just got it's just got this thing which is which is hampering it. So set up to the baller. You just focus on that right hand for me.
Okay. We're going to bring the club up in the air. This is a great tip for you when you're just practicing away.
Think think of um who's the best golfer in the world at the moment? Scotty Sheffller. Pretty much.
He is really meticulous on how he puts his hands on the golf club. He will often have the golf club up in the air like this, working at his grip. So, he's making sure that this leading edge is pointing straight up.
He's making sure that the right and the left hand are in a good place. Appreciated it. There you go.
There you go. That's why I think it's probably a good idea for you to do this up here so you can see what's going on. Okay, that's actually really good.
I love that. So, from there Oh, this is weird. Have a swing for me.
Stop. Okay, good. And this I'm I'm guaranteeing you and this is the tennis in you.
That ball's coming back over and you're making that adjustment just before you're about to take the racket back. I can twist the the racket in my hand. So, you're fine with a last minute adjustment.
We're not. We want to take that out. That's really good.
Keep it there. Fingers. There you go.
Fingers. There you go. That was a good cue from Andy.
Bit more. Bit more. Bit more.
There you go. Don't change it now. Don't change that.
That's it. God. There.
Well done. That was nice. You still You still went back at the end.
So, the last minute you just like it's just right here. It's not fair. You have to let me move.
Love it. Okay. Don't change that.
That's there. Oh god. Okay.
And the brilliant. Now that was so strange. What did the height look like, Michelle?
Up. Up. Up.
Correct. I like it more. Your highest one.
What did I say the highest one was? 22. 35.
Okay. Yeah. Do you know what that one was?
Change those numbers around. Wow. 53.
53. 53. Amazing.
If the golf ball is going low and it's going left, what happens when it hits the ground? It's going to keep moving forward and to the left. It releases and runs off the green.
There you go. Um into something. Into something.
Into something. into the crab. Uh, what do you think it might do now with a shot like that?
Gently land. Oh, wouldn't that be nice? Oh my god.
Two in a row. I mean, I'm I'm just going to I'm just going to I'm just going to just I'm just going to do something here. It's the longest shot you've hit so far.
Wow. By a long chalk. That was actually good.
And your height was higher or lower than the last one? Higher. Okay.
It's like play your card driving. 50 six and a half. 65.
Wow. Wow. Come on.
You've almost doubled your doubled your feet just from changing your grip. Let's not get carried away. You've only hit a couple here.
Come on. You got to still work hard. I don't want you to ease off here.
We'll take this out. We'll actually we'll actually get you getting a little bit more attention on you aiming now. You keep an eye on that grip though.
Lovely. I mean, oh, that felt good. That is so good.
Brilliant. Give me a height guess. 63.
68. Oh, Price is right though. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
You're right. You're right. Perfect.
Got it. It's a toe, right? Toe.
Oh, no. 100%. Yeah, that was out the toe.
So, here's the thing. This is where we get to the next part. So, do me a favor.
Take your setup for me. So, we need to bear in mind that you lose balance quite often and the strikes aren't that consistent. Are you too far away or too close?
Which one would it be? Too far. Too far away.
So, stay there. Now, come back a bit. So, if I actually do this here, so just move your right foot for me.
So, I'm 6'2 with really long arms. Tell me what that looks like when I'm standing the golf ball. Oh dear.
Okay, so you can see already that would make sense why you're getting cramp in your toes. This would make sense why it's hard to hit the ground consistently in the right place. This would make sense why it's easy to fall forward because often you fall forward, you sometimes fall back.
Let's just get you standing in my footprints. Now I get to start at 6'2. Yes, you do.
So now you might need to narrow the stance just a little bit, but the distance from the ball is good. How does that feel? Crunched.
Crunched. Claustrophobic. Weird.
So you get yourself ready with the grip police in place. Perfect. Yeah.
Okay. Move it a little an inch closer. Give me another inch.
There you go. Oh my god. That looks great.
Good to go. Very nice. And you felt really close then, didn't you?
Guess what? What now though? There was so much awkward going on.
Guess what's going to happen now though, Michelle? If anything, there you sort of lost balance, but you lost balance sort of this side of the line over here. You didn't lose balance over here.
No, it just felt so strange. Yeah. Yeah.
I'm like, somebody's going to get hurt. There's an optimum distance from the golf ball for you. We don't know what it is yet.
Good. Because before when you were hitting shots, you could hit the ball out of the toe or the heel. So, what we're gonna do, because we're getting a few too many of the heel strikes, I am going to give us a little bit of feedback here.
Yeah. Uhhuh. So, imagine that this is very, very expensive.
It's made of cashmere and peers will be really upset if you hit it. It's my dog. Oh, there you go.
It's the dog. Now, if I get this in so that you can only hit it out the middle or the toe, then that's giving us great feedback. So obviously if you hit out the heel that means you've got to move that way and you'll hit Oh dear god.
My beautiful Kashmir towel or or Nikki. Good to go. Very nice.
Well done. You just got a load of grass on Nikki from your divot, but we're totally fine with that. She's fine.
She's fine. Very nice. Good.
So that's two in a row now where the ball hasn't hit the heel. That's good. Yeah.
So this this works which is great. So, we're going to leave it in for a few more. Oh, that was it.
Beautiful. Well done. Take it.
Take it. Take it. Take it.
That routine is great now, isn't it? Oh, yeah. Very good.
God, that's straight. Really good. Higher.
No hook. Grip is brilliant there. So good.
I mean, that's like headed. It's hard to tell what it was because it just kind of goes pretty straight, doesn't it? Kind of boring.
Let's kind It kind of boring. That's what I like to hear. I mean, let's just look at the difference here.
The thing is the grip. The right hand is totally different now. We can see how much more on top the right hand is.
Building that routine up top like Scotty Sheffller is crucial for you. But look at this down the line here. Now, we can see that you're actually a little bit closer enough now.
So, we've got the the line for you to measure is the back of the tricep. You'll see there's a line vertically down. It's clipping the knee and it's going through the foot.
So, we can see the toes, the other side of the line. Whereas, we can see that on the old one, it's definitely going into the front of the toes. So, standing that little bit closer, that's your line to use when it comes to live practice.
And as we saw, the club face isn't massively different, but we know that the shots are so much better because that ball isn't hooking anymore. Amazing. Thank you so much.
So good. Well done, Michelle. Thank you.
Thank you. Good stuff. Now look guys, if you enjoyed that, it just shows how important the grip is there to the club face.
