The murders in this part most commonly happened out of nowhere, by the time the guards Realized this, it was too late, no one had done it, nobody had seen, They were all innocent and one was on the ground in agony dying [Music] Hello friends, today is a very special day that I'm very excited about because we are in the Alcatraz prison, yes, Alcatraz you've probably heard of it, the maximum security prison Where the most dangerous criminals in the U. S. were for 29 years, the plan is that we explore The facilities of this place, that we will go deep into prisoner cells, that we will listen to stories about escape attempts, that together we learn about the history of this unique spot in the world.
Yes my friends, this will surely be very cool, highly interesting, let's go for it! (Music) Alcatraz island is located in the city of San Francisco, at approximately one kilometer and a half away From the famous Golden Gate bridge, getting inside Alcatraz is free of charge What does cost you is the transportation to get here, you get here by ferry which costs about $35 round trip It takes about 12 to 15 minutes to get here That at some point, a prison feared by the entire planet, today is a place that more than 1. 5 million tourists Visit each year, it generatesa lot of money and is part of the the U.
S. National Parks Program So let's start with the really interesting history of this place and how it came to be one of the most feared prisons on the entire planet Alcatraz Island from about 1860 to 1930 was U. S.
Military territory of the United States of America Since that time it also played the role of a prison but only for war prisoners It was around 1930 that the mob and organized crime in the United States started to get out of control Think about it, it was the time when it was made illegal to consume alcohol, the italian mob was highly dangerous Very dangerous prisioners were leading criminal missions from inside the prison facilities Then, somebody had the idea to send all these dangerous criminals to one place where they would be completely isolated from the civilization Was then that they stumbled upon this place where we are standing: Alcatraz Island And they determined that it would be perfect to fulfill this purpose They already had the structure, but it was mostly built with concrete so they reinforced some of the buildings They built some new ones using cement, very solid and impenetrable One other thing that made them choose this point as the destination for the prison is that it is an island Nearest land is 1. 5 km away, which is not easy to swim, especially when you consider that the Average temperature of these waters is usually around 10 degrees Celsius and that At least at that time these waters were frequently visited frequently visited by great white sharks So they said no one here is going to want to escape, but they were wrong In total 36 people tried to escape from this prison this prison, only 3 successfully did it, or so it is what is believed In a moment I will tell you in more detail about these fascinating stories Finally, we've arrived at the prison, the main building we're going in [Music] Look here, this part where we have entered was where the prisoners had their first steps And in this area was where they were given their uniforms that they were going to have to wear every day of their stay in this prison Once you had your uniform They would pass you here where you would get your first shower in this facility And these right here are the cells, incredible to think that each one of these cubicles became the home of a highly searched person Each cell in this building has something like 1. 5 x 2 meters in size They come in with a desk, a stool to sit on, a sink, a toilet and a space where the bed was The prison used to be divided by blocks, the a-b-c-d blocks This one here is B block, and this is C, each one with their respective levels And now we are about to enter the D block, where the most dangerous prisoners were placed If you were violent and didn't listen to the guards they would most likely send you with The most dangerous people in the D block.
This is an ordinary cell from D block, This was the bunk bed, a toilet next to his bed. And look, the curious thing is that it has more space than a regular cell from other blocks I imagine this is because these people couldn't go out, they couldn't interact with the other prisoners So, they could sort of have more space in their cells I was also reading that it was very normal that in this area the prisoners were tortured They were treated in a very inhumane way and this is a special cell from the D block Wow! Check th is out!
What makes it different is that they were placing the worst in here, at these spaces completely dark They were secured with a fence and an impenetrable solid steel door (MUSIC) This one right here used to be the recreation yard, in which the prisoners for a very short time in the Day they could go out and get some fresh air and get some exercise and and get some exercise And if only for a few moments the blue sky above of them. In this space right here used to be the Library, most of what we can see is currently under repair but we Can give us an idea of its dimensions and what it used to look like, I imagine reading a book must be a Momentary escape when you're a prisoner, you see, if you are deprived of your physical freedom, I think You don't have much left but to exploit your mental freedom to the fullest and a good book A good story, is the best way to do that. Right now we're walking through the dining area Which if we think about it, it used to be the most dangerous area of the entire prison, think about it, at this place three Times a day hundreds of prisoners were here, each one of them armed with a spoon and with a fork What we're looking at right now, used to be the kitchen area Look at table were they used to hang The kitchen knives, each one of the shapes of the knives were the knives was perfectly draw So that the guards could easily notice if any knives were missing Murders on this side happened more commonly out of the blue, it is not like they would start a fight and start shouting at each other It was more like somebody would walk up and another prisoner would prisoner would come in and very discreetly hit him He would keep walking and by the time the guards noticed, it was too late No one had done it, no one had seen, everyone was innocent and a man was on the ground in agony, dying (MUSIC) Something I considered that must have been a constant torture for the prisoners is that right in fronyt of them They had the clear sign of freedom, just to get out and watch in front of them And to have in front of them the stunning city of San Francisco, what a madness to rise your eyes and say to you There is what I long for, what I want so much, there is the freedom but I can't get there I can't, if I try to get there, if I try to swim that mile, the best shot Is to get caught or die in the attempt, which by the way this brings me to the one that possibly many Of you were waiting for.
Stories of people who tried to escape from Alcatraz prison. The most violent escape attempt was made in the year of 1946 and was called the Battle of Alcatraz And it was a mission that took months of preparation. One of the leaders of this mission, Bernard Coy, left to eat properly weeks before attempting to escape in order to to escape in order to fit in the middle Of two slightly separated bars side by side.
What a madness, I called that determination The thing is that they were going to distract a guard and steal the keys to the warehouse Where they kept the guns, but when they got there, they were caught and the Emergency alarm was acivated, then the prisoners panicked so the guards were taken hostage They locked them inside cells and threatened them for the keys Two guards refused to help and this resulted in them being shot in cold blood and this two died Also in the battle three inmates were killed, another one was wounded, and 11 guards were hurt Wow! What a crazy story, there is no doubt that reality always exceeds fiction Another very famous story, whose conclusion is not known to this day happened in the year of 1962, three prisoners agreed to try to escape, the complexity of their plan came To such a level that they were able to fabricate false heads to distract the guards and make them think. That they were still inside their cell, somehow they managed to escape, they swam away, no one has the Official version and they were never found to date, it is not known whether they died in the attempt or not If they managed to escape successfully, there is no record of their escape and approximately six months After that, also in 1962, two prisoners tried to escape in a similar way By the time they reached the water and started to swim the guards noticed And began to look for them immediatly, a few minutes later one of the prisoners was tired from swimming and he was found About 100 yards from the point of departure and the other one was not found and they suspected that he had died in the water Apparently because of the cold water he passed out, he was unconscious, but the water current Took him to land, the man awoke to find that he was once again under arrest Wow!
So close but so far away, this made the world realize that if there was a way to scape Alcatraz And it was one of the triggers to the decision to close the prison for the first time. It was being considered to close the jail because it represented a very large expense They say that keep a prisoner here was three times more expensive than in any other prison on the U. S.
In addition to that, as Alcatraz is an island, prison construction was easily ruined A lot of the metal of the structures was already rusted, the concrete of the buildings was already badly damaged So this all clashed with the fact that it was Possible to escape from this prison and so in 1963 it was decided to close [Music] And that's how we conclude our visit to Alcatraz. This island that for 29 years saw the Faces of 1,576 prisoners and was home to many guards and their families. How amazing to think That there are people who lived their childhood next to a prison.
I fully recommend if you get To be in San Francisco that you come and visit Alcatraz. A very very cool experience in which you will Learn a lot, everything is very well exhibited and very well explained. Well!
Eeven the souvenirs are Super cool and in this I bought a little cup. It's like a prisoner's cup and it's very cool. I bought a prisoner's spoon.
Experiences like this make you think a lot about how valuable freedom is And how much we should cherish it. You know my friends, cherish Your freedom, don't do wrong things, you never know when one wrong act is going to cost you one of the Most valuable thing, that is our freedom. My friends, thank you very much for joining me on a new adventure I really hope you enjoyed it and as always, I'll see you again in a few days with a new video.
