the cause of the Lahaina Wildfire has not yet been determined but in the days after the deadly Blaze there were a number of conspiracy theory claims of the cause kitv 4's Paul Drewes reports on where those claims actually came from many people may go online and buy products or even get news from China but they may not know that information is coming from a foreign country and along with information there can also be disinformation as we found out with the Maui fire unlike looking at a label to see where a product comes from tracking down
the source for news is harder and in the days following the devastating Maui fires as people look for Clues to the cause there were some outlandish conspiracy theory claims being made and shared on social media some of those involved a secret weather weapon being tested by the United States that was false information and the source of it was ultimately traced back to China according to the New York Times I think the problem is that a lot of Americans tend to believe those kind of conspiracy theories so if the Chinese are putting them out there and
spreading them on a legitimate social media platforms like X the former Twitter and and people are reading them and thinking oh what is the American government doing uh then that's a problem this misinformation coming from China could also be a problem for relations between the two countries the U.S China relationship is so poor now that this is merely one more item on a long list of things that are already causing tenses between the two countries the U.S and China have an important trading relationship with more than 700 billion dollars worth of goods exchanged last year
alone trade actually was a record amount of last year even in the face of covet so in economic terms and even with all the tariffs Americans are still eager to buy Chinese products but those tariffs and restrictions on some products have led to friction between the two superpowers and disinformation after a disaster could make things worse this is uh potentially something that that that could uh you know worsen fissures that already exist poor salting wounds that already exist this isn't the only time another country has sent out disinformation on our social media feeds so it
should be a reminder to those going online to be aware of who is making a claim and where that information comes from before you believe it yourself or even help spread outlandish claims on social media there's no question that if the Chinese government the Russian government and other governments have devoted a lot of effort and resources toward trying to shape American public opinion and and usually in ways that are not in our in the interest of our national well-being and we need to be cautious and and cognizant that as we consume social media that kind
of an effort is underway Paul Drewes kitv 4 Island
