[Music] no no no no no no no Stephen King's work has always dabbled in stories where regular objects turn Super Evil and the monkey from one of his stories is no different its adaptation of the same name was recently released and was directed by osgard Perkins a man who Smiles at death no I am not kidding his mother Barry baronson was in the first plane that came down on 9/11 although he took a lot of time to recover from the tragedy he revealed in an interview that he now looks at the notion of death with
a smile now when a horror movie based on King's work is directed by someone like osgard Perkins the result is bound to be outstanding in this video I will explore the monkeyy titula monster and its ending brace yourself for plenty of decapitations bizarre accidents and family Dynamics so crazy that you might never look at a windup toy the same way again before we go into our explanation we have a very small request if you like our content please support us by subscribing to our Channel this is a small click for you but for us it
means a lot thank you let's begin py shelburn attempt to destroy the toy the film begins in 1999 with pety shelburn a pilot who stumbles upon an evil toy monkey he's named py just like the younger generation will meet later and he's father to twin boys Hal and Bill at the start pety wants nothing more than to get rid of this monkey he believes it might be cursed or demonic maybe both if he has found out what the monkey can do or not is not really revealed in the film but from his desperate attempts to
get rid of the damn toy pety certainly knows that it's best to get rid of the toy so we see him walk in with a blowtorch in one hand and the monkey in the other pety tries to burn the Blasted thing hoping to melt its plastic face and end its hold on him however if it was so easy the film would never have been made we know it py does not the monkey never shows any permanent damage it might appear to melt for a moment but that smug grin stays put as if the Flames don't
affect it at all shortly afterward pety shelburn vanishes leaving his wife Lois to raise their identical twin Sons on her own now there's two plausible reasons why py abandoned his family some like his wife think he's just a deadbeat dad who couldn't handle family life on the other hand he probably abandoned everyone to protect them from the toys dark magic the film however never offers a closure on this Hal the timid and Bill the bully the film then jumps a few years later Lois shelburn is a single mom caring for Hal and Bill who are
Polar Opposites Hal is quiet anxious Often overshadowed by his domineering brother Bill is Brash cruel and quick to bully Hal for any reason their father's old belongings are packed away in a closet Gathering dust among them sits that wretched toy monkey key included waiting for another chance to cause chaos the film shows how the boys are dra drawn to the monkey one day they wh the key that evening while everyone sits at dinner the monkey's little drumsticks begin tapping a rhythm from some corner of the house next thing we know Annie the babysitter found her
head locked off and this was the first of many bizarre deaths Yet to Come of course the monkey's random drum beats manipulate reality in such a manner that death occurs it seems that all that the evil monkey hungers for is death but why that's the ending explained bit so let's not get ahead of ourselves oh and the drum beating is actually a change from stepen King's novel where the monkey beats a pair of symbols when it wants to kill someone however the monkey with symbols appeared in Toy Story 3 and Disney owns its rights so
osgard had to settle for drums in his movie anyway in the aftermath of Annie's death Hal feels guilty just for existing Bill though acts like the accidental death is no big deal this Dynamic of fear guilt and Reckless curiosity is kind of what leads to the next death sequence bill continues to bully Hal you see he's older by a few minutes but he uses those few minutes to act like a complete Tyrant Hal reaches a Breaking Point and decides to wind the monkey's key again hoping it will Kill Bill instead their mother Lois dies of
a sudden aneurysm right in front of Bill that heartbreak cements Hal's doubts into concrete belief that the monkey's power is cruel and random so the thing to learn about the monkey from Lois's death is that you can't Direct the toy to kill any specific person it does what it wants the teleporting monkey is presumably indestructible Lois's death shatters the twins moreover they were still young and could not stay alone so they moved to Maine to live with their aunt Ida and Uncle chip who was played by the movies director himself Hal tries to hack the
monkey to pieces with a Cleaver before leaving but he soon discovers it's indestructible he Stomps on it slams it against walls and eventually flings it into the trash yet somehow the toy reappears in a closet or on a bed taunting him he and Bill realize that the monkey returns no matter what they do Bill frustrated by the funeral and everything else decides to test the monkey's power and see if the money can really cause deaths Hal warns him begs him not to whine that key but Bill doesn't listen he cranks the key then sits back
to see who dies this time their Uncle chip heads out on a hunting trip and ends up getting trampled by a stampede of animals now death the fourth Horseman of apocalypse has the power to cause death through multiple means including the beasts of Earth you'll know in a while from now why I am talking about death the horsemen it's a horrific scene played with an odd sense of comedic timing in the film in fact one of osgood's deal breakers about the adaptation was that it would have a dark comedic tone while Stephen King's novel is
a pretty serious one interestingly when Osgood took the script to the novelist he did not suggest any changes meaning he liked this new approach Chip's fate confirms the monkey kills whomever it wants ignoring Bill's direct desire to harm Hal understanding they can't destroy the toy the twins seal it in its box and dump it down a well hoping it'll stay submerged forever the film leaps forward 25 years at this point if it were a typical horror film maybe that would be the end of the story but the monkey is anything but typical another time Jump
now we see Hal as an adult played by Theo James he's deeply traumatized and has lived his life under the guilt of being the cause of of his mother's death and remains convinced that he brings Misfortune wherever he goes he has a son named py named after how's father and an ex-wife who plans to have her new husband Ted Hammerman adopt py fully of course Tom was played by the legendary Elijah Woods now if Tom was to adopt py permanently it would cut Hal out of his son's life Hal only sees py once a year
believing that's the best way to keep him safe from the monkey's curse or more accurately from how's messed up life py on the other hand senses his father's indifference and resents him for never being a good dad Hal and py stay at a motel for a brief fatherson bonding attempt that quickly goes south Hal says he's an only child py senses Hal's lying but can't figure out why and the dance of death resumed as a woman at the motel dies a particularly bizarre death She's electrocuted near the swimming pool then her body explodes from The
Surge that horrifying accident tells Hal that the monkey is back somewhere playing its drums under the same old random rules soon after aunt Ida dies at her home guess what they find near her body the monkey now free from the well Hal and Bill's attempts to keep it submerged for decades clearly didn't work Ricky the monkey's new keeper and Bill's secret mission when Aunt Ida's estate goes up for sale a local boy named Ricky spots the monkey among her possessions Ricky's father was a local police officer who is now absent and the monkey offers him
a strange sense of connection to that lost parent the movie then shows a chain of bizarre accidents in the town people die left and right under the monkey's watch meanwhile Bill calls Hal out of the blue and insists he comes settle Ida's estate Hal finally returns to Maine along with py Hal soon learns that bill actually hired Ricky to get the monkey for him bill has spent years believing that how used the monkey to kill their mother Lois and he wants revenge he suspects the monkey can be used to kill specific people if one uses
it properly Hal knows from experience that's impossible the monkey's kills are random but Bill is single-minded he's certain the monkey spares its key Turner while claiming a victim now this is true the one who turns the key actually remains immune to Carnage that follows he's tried multiple times to kill Hal but each time the monkey kills someone else instead bill now has a new plan he wants Hal to bring py so that py can turn the key of course Bill hopes that this should kill Hal and he would have his thirst for Revenge quenched at
long last futile reconciliation and reign of death Ricky who had been left half deranged because of his bond with the monkey wears his father's old police uniform and kidnaps Hal and py at gunpoint he then takes the father and son to Bill's house which by the way was rigged with booby traps and deadly Contraptions meanwhile Bill sits inside waiting for a final fight py sneaks through these traps and meets his uncle for the first time Bill manages to trick pety into turning the key hoping to kill Hal but the monkey picks Ricky instead a swarm
of wasps flies from a hidden nest only to sting Ricky to his death in fact The Pale Horseman or death also kills by plague and one can consider this swarm of wasps a plague Furious Bill tries to force the monkey to drum by shaking it violently point to note is that he does not turn the key this time around he wants hell dead and he wants it now he doesn't care how many other people have to die first the monkey responds by drumming uncontrollably unleashing widespread destruction across the town Windows explode cars crash random folks
on the street Dro dead in comedic or horrific ways hell an entire plane crashes down killing all passengers and more people on the ground OSG good Perkins cranks up the madness in these scenes it's not exactly laugh out loud funny but there's an absurd undertone to these overthe toop deaths that will definitely remind you of the Final Destination films in the midst of collapsing buildings and screaming neighbors Bill and Hal finally confront their shared grief Bill accuses Hal of killing their mother Hal admits he once turned the key wishing bill would die only for Lois
to drop dead Instead This misunderstanding has fueled Bill's bitterness for decades Bill confesses he wanted Revenge but as the monkey kills more and more people he realizes his Vendetta is hopeless the two brothers hold each other cry and seem ready to mend their broken bond just then one of Bill's booby traps misfires the mother's old bowling ball previously rigged to shoot off like a cannon whips through the air and kills Bill the moment is brutal shocking and ironically connected to their mother Lois you see since the beginning of time Bill's entire Crusade has revolved around
her memory only for her own bowling ball to kill him it almost sounds like a super weird case of poetic justice to me Howen py hit the road with the monkey's unwanted baggage with Bill dead and the town in Ruins Hal and py load up their car the monkey ends up with them once again Hal decides they can't risk leaving it behind the toy always finds a way back and leaving it for someone else to discover would just lead to more of the same more of the Mindless and absurd Carnage Hal has tried discarding or
destroying it several times and none of it has worked he has accepted that the only real solution is to keep it close never turning its key again maybe that way it can't harm anyone else as they drive through the devastated streets they pass a strange Grim dark figure a pale man with black eyes riding a Pale Horse the film strongly hints this is the Pale Horseman a Biblical reference to death himself this is why I brought it up initially he nods at them as if acknowledging Hal's new role as caretaker for the monkey's lethal power
then he rides off Hal figures if death is out for a joy ride then the monkey's Cosmic evil might exist on a bigger scale than he ever imagined but Hal decides he'll no longer cower he suggests he and py go dancing something Lois loved py smiles and agrees so in the end how buckled up and transformed as a man he was no longer going to stay down when life knocked him he was going to rise for his son for those around him and most importantly for himself but the question remains why does Hal keep the
monkey with himself well in a more typical horror film the protagonist might fling the cursed object off a cliff or bury it under concrete Hal tried that twice he knows better now each time the monkey reappears or leads to more pointless killings how sees no alternative but to keep it near him and guard it like a dragon sits on gold if nobody whs the key the monkey presumably remains dormant no more drumming no more sudden aneurysms or freak accidents that's the Hope Hal might plan to lock it in a basement or a storage unit or
maybe keep it in the trunk of his car the exact method isn't the point the point is that Hal acknowledges his role as The Reluctant caretaker who doesn't want want more Bloodshed on his conscience whatever really happened to py Howen Bill's dad is a sequel possible we see Captain pety shelburn played by Adam Scott at the film's start failing to destroy the monkey in an Antiques Shop his blowtorch trick Fizzles then he's gone leaving Lois to raise their boys the film never shows his final fate though a few lines hint he might have left to
Shield his family from the monkey or from himself Hal and Bill refer to him sporadically their mother calls him a dead beat but is that the whole story some fans theorize that py discovered a partial solution to the monkey's curse and left to carry it out only for the toy to slip away from him others believe the monkey devoured Petey's Soul or he found another dimension to hide in the movie doesn't confirm anything that Gap remains wide open and that's why a prequel movie would make a lot of sense we do know he truly cared
about his sons because he tried to rid them of the toy before they ever laid eyes on it but the question of his ultimate whereabouts remains unanswered a prequel about Captain pety shelburn discovering the monkey while on a flight or visiting overseas ports could be possible the movie can explore how the toy affected him so much that he had to leave his family we'd see how it first revealed its lethal power to him why he tried to burn it in that antiques shop and whether he truly left his family out of cowardice or fatherly protection
in fact there could be a sequel after the prequel that could see Captain pety shelburn return from his disappearance to to help his son and his grandson the monkey screen versus novel there are four major differences between the movie's version of the story and its source material firstly King's monkey bangs symbols rather than playing a drum the film swapped in a drum because the symbol banging monkey from Toy Story 3 is under Disney's domain next in King's version Hal doesn't have a twin brother he's a father to two sons and one is named py but
Bill doesn't exist the Revenge angle isn't part of the short story also in the short story Hal and his son weigh down the monkey with rocks and dump it into a lake killing a bunch of fish in the process it suggests the monkey might remain active underwater but the tale ends without further elaboration the film's finale sees how driving off with the monkey in the back seat accompanied by glimpses of large scale destruction and lastly osgard perkins's adaptation pushes the comedic Edge Mo featuring elaborate Final Destination Style kills King's text is shter and invests less
in extended Gore sequences the emphasis is more on dread and building tension than on comedic bursts of violence the toys's mysterious origin and Powers the film never spells out who made this monkey or why it exists we only know it kills people at random and Spares the person who winds its key it is highly likely that the monkey is an artifact possessed by a demonic force on the contrary it could be a cosmic horror incarnate you know something from an entire L different realm altogether something on lovecraftian lines the monkey teleports cannot be destroyed by
physical means be it fire chopping drowning and kills in improbable yet lethal ways every time it drums it sets off a chain reaction that ends in someone's gruesome demise the method can be extremely simple or have several layers just when you begin to think that yeah this is how this person will die you find another level to it once the monkey decides on a Target that person has has little chance to escape even if they do it might Circle back with another contrived accident the monkey acts like it wants an audience it waits until Hal
or Bill are watching before it executes many kills this pattern suggests it's driven by some sadistic pleasure in their suffering though the final scene teases the possibility that the spirit behind the monkey might depart when Hal meets the pale Horsemen the film implies the monkey remains cursed a Bus full of cheerleaders apparently gets wiped out moments later showing that death is still swirling around them at its core the monkey is a reflection on death as an Unstoppable random Force the toy is basically a standin for the Grim Reaper you can't bargain with it you can't
pick its victims you can't persuade it to leave you alone once you've activated it death in the film arrives unexpectedly whether you're prepared or not Bill tries to command it fixated on controlling who lives and who dies his obsession leads him down a vengeful path ignoring the lesson lessons how learned long ago the monkey doesn't take requests the movie tells us that death often feels personal but is actually random how's desire for Bill's death results in Lois's demise Bill's desire for Hal's death kills Uncle chip aunt Ida or the motel woman each kill points out
that no one can orchestrate it for personal gain there's also a commentary on guilt Hal grows up terrified of losing anyone else he distances himself from his own son to avoid repeating the tragedies that struck his family Bill nurses a grudge for decades Never Letting Go in the final scene Hal finally decides to live a little he asks py to go dancing the monkey remains locked in the back seat presumably but Hal won't let it dictate his every move anymore death is inevitable for everyone but life goes on until that final drum roll and if
