[Music] ah no English no English no English no English no English no English no English Ali London office kishida Japan how are you uh English English English how are you f thank you you I'm fine thank you and you this isn't your first day in English class anymore so why are you still saying this first this is not wrong it's fine sometimes we say it however there are so many better options that you can say in answer to this question and there are so many better ways to ask this question depending on how the person's
mood is your relationship to them the formality a lot of things we've got a big lesson for you today so casually between friends in the street it's usually just this all right mate yeah good you yeah see you later CIA oh my God and this word all right you need to know it very very useful pronunciation there are two ways you can pronounce this the L sounds more like a o so instead of all it's more like O Say it With Me O and this T can be glottal can be true te doesn't matter both
are correct just your preference so version one all right all right both good it's just your personal preference of pronunciation style that's it all right is so useful in English it means so many different things depending on the intonation the stress and how our face looks when we say it for example it can mean all right this doesn't need a reply but if you want to remember it means hello so just give another all right in reply you all right usually add you before all right you all right yeah I'm all right uh it was
all right all right you see it all depends on your intonation and your facial expression so practice those with me uh you can just rewind this if you want to do it again but be careful in the USA in American English when you use this to say hello all right they take it seriously they think that you're asking are you okay you look sad so they might answer am I all right I've been a therapy three times today KFC four times I am great Americans get confused so easily just be nice to them but no
for British people this just means hello okay now if you understand this about British people so many things make sense when we ask how are you we don't expect a real answer why we're British we constantly think we are in your way that's why we say sorry when you hit us we always think we're wasting your time that's why we say sorry before we say hello or ask for anything and that is why we give such short nothing answers to this question however you can understand so much information about our current state in just two
or three words this is what we say and this is what we mean I'm fine this is why you should not learn this in your first day of English school I'm fine never means I'm fine I am absolutely not fine I'm either angry sad both and I don't want to talk to you about it right now but I will talk to you about it later having said that this can mean no I'm genuinely okay but only in response to you thinking I'm not okay for example remember this I'm fine yeah to be honest that is
the only time we use I'm fine is when we want to show you no no no really really I'm okay are you cold no no I'm fine are you sure do you want a jumper I'm kind of warm want a jacket I'm fine do you want a blanket yeah I'm all right you this is the stand standard common answer it means nothing and that's the point we are so accustomed to asking an answering this in our greetings that it feels like nothing coming out of our mouths so if you're not feeling amazing or terrible this
is your answer yeah good you this is the natural way that we really say I'm fine thank you and you wait wait wait I'm good this is I'm sorry this is bad grammar should be I'm well oh really how are you hi Shak I'm good thank you how you doing is that Prince Williams saying I'm good I think it is if that's not good enough for you grammar nerds then nothing is good enough yeah I'm feeling pretty good this is the legal limit of happiness that British people are allowed to show now if you really
do feel so good you want to say oh my God I feel amazing no that's illegal only on graduation days wedding days the birth of your first child only then are you allowed to give a short celebration yeah I'm I'm doing really good but okay yes they might use correct grammar and say I'm doing well however usually it means one of two things one I'm doing well this person has truly found peace in their life and good luck to them the other type of person who says this is yeah doing well the type of person
who says it this way is always a rich person called Hugo that wants to tell you about their Investments yeah not too bad thanks some things are good some things are bad but they don't want to bother you with their problems the usual H same old same old nothing is better or different since the last time we spoke plaing along similar to same old same old it just means I'm doing my day-to-day tasks nothing crazy has happened not bad I will probably complain to my friends later today about regular stuff probably you too but nothing
unusual if you say it twice though yeah not bad not bad I'm trying to keep things casual between us and show you that I never get sad getting there this is when you're becoming normal again what does that mean it could mean that something bad happened or something new happened in your life and you're getting used to it you're getting accustomed to it and your life is becoming normal again so you're describing the progress as almost there almost finished almost okay again can't complain everything in my life is falling apart but I'm doing that stoic
stiff upper lip thing that British people do and trying not to let you know that I am devastated uh yeah I'm all right that hesitation that means they want to tell you their problems so if you want to have that conversation be prepared for a therapy session if not just say glad you're doing great and walk on I'm coping something really bad or really stressful is happening in that person's life one more bad thing that person is going to go crazy I've been better so something bad is happening in our life we don't want to
necessarily give you all the details we'll just say I've been better or I've had better days this means I am literally having the worst day of my life my dog died my wife left me I don't have a job anymore so if you want to sit and talk to me and have a therapy session for the next 45 minutes great if not just say oh I'm really really sorry to hear that and walk on again we really don't expect a long conversation from this short exchange unless you're close friends so we can also be very
casual with the question how's it going how you doing both very casual we like to keep it very casual now in Australian English they like to use a mix of these two questions hey you going in the UK we only say it that way when we're really awkward and we make a mistake with one of those questions but Aussies they're so cool there they can do everything American however they like what's up because they're cooler than us and they can do things we can't we don't sound cool hi what's up see I sound like a
right loser now you can also ask how are things and really you only ask this question when maybe they've had a difficult time lately or they started something new um or you haven't seen them in a while and you want the update on their true feelings but oh you want a real answer from us but why we're so boring in that case ask one of these questions this is how you get a true answer from us if for example we both know that this person is having a difficult time and you want to say hey
um I'm here to listen to you tell me your problems say this how are you holding up again this feels very personal so be prepared to actually listen to an answer now do they look sad if so ask are you all right remember this question from before yeah casually you're right means hello and how are you however said with this intonation you right practice with me you're all right this sounds like I have noticed that you look sad and I really want to know if I can help you if they definitely look sad they're crying
maybe and you because you're nosy you want to know why you can ask this what's the matter or what's up be careful of the intonation because what's up sounds different to what's up what's the problem no don't ask this if someone looks sad only ask ask what's the problem if you are the boss of a shop and a customer is being a Karen and you want to tell her why she's wrong that's how this sounds so don't say this if you want to sound empathetic now again if you want to check on someone maybe because
they started a new job a new school something is new in their life or yeah maybe if something is difficult in their life at the moment you could ask how are you getting on again this sounds like that person has something new in their life like a new job a new school a new baby and you want to know how they are coping how they're managing how they're dealing with that new situation okay your final test let's look at some very British interactions and see if you can understand the tiny nuances in conversation how you
getting on yeah getting there you're right I've had better days I'm fine you're all right yeah good you yeah I'm all right how are you holding up with a new baby you look tired oh it's so good I feel amazing he's sleeping right now I feel great all right all right it's a baby okay it's not a pizza so in the comments let me know how are you really and feel free to ask the other commenters how they're doing let's make this the only video on YouTube with a positive comment section impossible I know but
