Did you know that Jesus was hiding his true form all along? In Matthew 17, Jesus is transfigured in front of Peter, James, and John. His glorious heavenly form is revealed before them in epic splendor.
As Peter, James, and John summited the hill, a bright light emerged from Jesus. The brightness was piercing and his face shone like the rising sun. It was as if for a moment his humanity was shed and the essence of his deity shone through the cracks.
Emerging from the light were Moses and Elijah. They bowed before Jesus in worship. Peter foolishly suggested that they build temples to host these three heroes of God.
But as Peter was speaking, a bright light consumed him and the others completely. A cloud of holy radiance swirled around them like a tempest. Peter shrunk on the floor into a fetal position, covering his eyes from the light.
A voice like thunder boomed from the clouds, saying, "This is my beloved son. Hear him and only him. " Then the light disappeared.
The disciples opened their eyes to see Jesus standing alone on top of that hill without his radiance, but equally holy. The miracle wasn't the transfiguration. It was that he could keep his glory contained at all.
Peter learned a terrifying lesson that day. It is impossible to contain the Lord of Lords. [Music] Heat up here.
