gothmog was one of malcolm's most trusted and feared generals in the first age leading the dark lord's armies to victory in many battles he is also considered the greatest balrog to ever walk middle earth but how much do we actually know about him let's find out [Music] gothmog lord of balrogs high captain of angband was come and he drove a dark wedge between the elven hosts surrounding king fingon and thrusting turgon and hurin aside towards the fen of cerek then he turned upon fingon that was a grim meeting at last fingon stood alone with his
guard dead about him and he fought with gothmog until another balrog came behind and cast a thong of fire about him then gothmark hewed him with his black axe and a white flame sprang up from the helm of fingon as it was cloven thus fell the high king of the noldor and they beat him into the dust with their maces and his banner blue and silver they trod into the mire of his blood so we need to make something very clear from the start many of you may know gothmog from the lord of the rings
in the movies he is the deformed orc that leads sauron's armies into the battle of the pelano fields under the command of the witch king slay them one of them i will break him this in itself is a topic of debate as many people believe that tolkien intended that gothmog to be one of the nazgul but that's a discussion for another time this gothmog was originally one of the maya that gave his allegiance to malcolm and it was because of his brilliant mind and his ability to assume such an immensely powerful physical form that he
was made lord of the balrogs to give you a very quick rundown of what balrogs actually are in case you aren't aware we will look at this quote from the silmarillion of the maya many were drawn to malcolm splendor in the days of his greatness and remained in that allegiance down into his darkness and others he corrupted afterwards to his service with lies and treacherous gifts dreadful among these spirits were the valaraucar the scourges of fire that in middle earth were called the balrogs demons of terror these spirits took the forms of demons with hearts
of fire and whips of flame and malcolm gathered them to him at the fortress of udoon and when this fortress was eventually destroyed by the valar they fled west and hid in the pits of angband awaiting their masters orders gothmog was considered the high captain of angband and as i said being one of melkor's most trusted generals his only equal in rank was sauron hopefully that gives you an idea of just how powerful and well-respected he was so the first major battle that we know gothmog was a part of was the dagger-nui giliaf or the
battle under the stars it was the second major conflict of the war of jewels in valyrian and the battle started when malcor sent a large force of orcs to attack a group of noldor elves led by feinl they were camped on the northern shore of lake methrim and despite being heavily outnumbered the noldor elves quickly defeated the orcs however a small group managed to flee and fenal in his anger pursued them and in his wrath he got too far ahead of his people and noticing this the orcs stopped to give battle at the edge of
four deidoloth which was basically morgoth's land and while being so close to the gates of angband the orcs were soon joined by a group of balrogs led by gothmog the elves who by this point had joined the battle were quickly slain by the balrogs but feynor stood his ground he fought on alone until he was wounded by gothmog however before the killing blow could be struck feynor was rescued by his sense though he would later die from his wounds this being the first major impact the gothmog lord of balrogs had inflicted on the noldor elves
he would reappear as the general of angband in several more major conflicts including the dagor aglareb in which not many of his dealings are actually recorded the bragalak also known as the battle of the sudden flame i'm going to take a moment here to just give a moment of respect for the amazing names that tolkien always gives to his battles anyway the battle of the certain flame he helped lead morgoth's armies in an all-out assault to break the siege on angband and the battle of unnumbered tears in which he came up against another high king
of the noldor fingon now while the details of this battle are best left for his own video i will talk about gothmog's involvement so at a point where fingon's noldor force had already been weakened morgoth released his balrogs and dragons into the battle it was not long before fingon found himself surrounded and all of his guards slain he dueled one-on-one with gothmog but was hit from behind by another bellrock gothmog then took this opportunity to strike fingon over the head and fire sprang from his helm presumably this strike killed the high king of the naldor
instantly but gothmock continued to beat his body until nothing but dust was left a terrifying image this marks the day in defeat for the elves it was also here that gothmog along with some orcs captured hurin who was taken to angband and tortured for information on the hidden city of gondolin he gave up nothing and so morgoth cursed him eventually releasing him feigning pity to a defeated enemy unfortunately morgoth's plans were fulfilled when huron attempted to return to gondolin revealing its hidden location to the dark lord and so in the year 510 of the first
age after years spent trying to find its location gothmog and the forces of angband finally besieged the hidden city of gondolin gothmog was confronted by acthelion of the fountain one of the greatest heroes of the first age and they dueled the lord of the balrogs eventually knocked the sword from mcthelion's hand and prepared to strike him down but as he raised his fiery axe acthelyon ran towards gothmog ramming his pointed helmet into the chest of the demon forcing them both to fall back into the fountain of the king the waters then extinguished the flames that
kept gothmog alive killing him and drowning exellion ending the battle of gondolin so there we have it my friends that was the life of gothmock lord of balrogs as we know it it is very clear that he was an extremely feared being and rightly so he was devastatingly effective as a general for morgoth slaying two of the high kings of the noldor arguably some of the biggest turning points in the wars of valerian so my question for you guys today is this if gothmog had survived into the third age and was in allegiance with sauron
