[Music] let's now examine the quranic verses which demonstrate that IM have to be by Divine appointment by the appointment of Allah subhana wa ta'ala then will examine recognized hadiths from the prophet sallallahu alaih mentioned in and Sunni sources that demonstrate Theif the IM must be appointed by Allah subhana wa tala one very important verse that the school of uses as the basis for IM being chosen by God is verse 124 ofah Bak the verse that talks about Prophet ibraim achieving the status of IM remember when Allah subhana wa tala tested Prophet ibraim through words through
trials he succeeded what is the reward that allaha gave Prophet ibraim upon succeeding in his test Allah says I have now appointed you as an IM for the people all people you are now appointed as the IM I want you to emphasize on the word because when we see the Quran talking about it uses this same word and Arabic what does mean make when you assign something you make something you say I have made you as an IM I have appointed you as the Im so we see in this verse the Quran clearly states that
IM comes through through Divine appointment Allah didn't tell him okay now that you passed your test let the people decide who the Imam is Allah says no I have chosen you as the Imam very clear terms in the Holy Quran now one counterargument that some other schools of thought mention is that ibraim was a prophet and we don't dispute that God must choose His prophets we're not saying that people should choose the prophets no Allah is talking about the status of prophethood here and obviously that is by Divine appointment we're not talking about leadership IM
no this is prophethood the response to this objection or counterargument is that when Allah subhanahu waala gave ibraim the status of IM he was already a what a prophet he was already a prophet so we know for a fact in this verse inak Allah subhana tala is not talking about and prophethood say ibraim had already achieved the status of being a Prophet this is something new something additional something which he was not appointed to before that and this is the leadership which is called IM it's not prophit Hood question how do we know that imama
over here is not prophethood what evidence can we site to demonstrate that ibraim when God appointed him as the IM was already a prophet from Quran what evidence can we site not sure but when when there's a verse that mentions how Abraham was see the Quran does say that Allah tala took ibraim as his KH but we want to know the timing of this verse meaning when did God grant ibraim the position of Imam if we can figure that out we can show that he got the status of IM after being a prophet how can
we show that the chronology the timing of it after it was see the verse itself does not say that Allah gave him the status of IM after sacrificing his son maybe we can find that in Hadith we want to stick to the Holy Quran so there there isn't much discussion and argumentation the answer lies in the response of prophet ibraim when Allah tells him I have appointed you as the IM what was the response of prophet ibraim he said oh Allah what about my progeny will any one of them achieve the status of imama question
when did ibraim have a have children because in this verse he's asking this position for his children well when did he have children when he was very old is there a verse in the Quran that says that yes which verse he says when he's thanking foring yes inah ibim verse 39 Prophet ibraim States this Dua which the Quran quotes he says oh Allah I thank you all praises to you who gave me what despite my old age because ibraim was very old when Allah T gave him his two sons I thank Allah for giving me
is and is despite my old age so Prophet ibraim was a prophet for many many years and decades at at the end of his life Allah T grants him what two sons when he was old now he Allah gives him after having children and a progeny the Quran tells us about the status of IM because in that verse of IM in he mentions his and what about my my progeny because if you didn't have a progeny yet and you're childless you don't ask that when you have children then you ask Allah what about my children
and progeny because now I have children I know I have a progeny what about them any of them will be imams this in itself is one strong indicator that when Allah subhana tala gave Prophet ibraim the status of IM he was already a prophet and this status came towards the end of his life so we know that Allah is not talking about he's not talking about prophethood he's talking about Im so the word IM IM the position of IM according to the Quran is by what divine appointment we're trying to find clues in the Quran
about the position of IM you name it all of these words we have evidence in the Quran about them so this is one verse that we can site and this has to do with Imam there are some other verses by the way that clearly State Allah chooses the IM yes so in the case of prophet ibraim yes another thing that we can analyze from the Quran is that the status of IM is higher than Nua yes because he was already a prophet Allah elevated him to the status of IM he did not demote him to
the status of IM right would would you get see you're a prophet and Allah says now that you passed a very important test I've given you imama is that a promotion or demotion it has to be a promotion otherwise it doesn't make any sense since it's a promotion what does that tell you about IM and prophethood imama has a higher status now some of them will argue oh so you're saying the IMs of are higher than the prophet Muhammad sahu alai no because the prophet while he was a prophet he was also an IM don't
forget that the prophet's leadership also falls in the category of General Im so the prophet was an IM and Prophet just like ibraim he was a prophet and he was a prophet number one nebbi secondly he was a r a messenger number three he was an IM same with the prophet sallallahu alaih so we're not saying the imams of have a position the prophet s Al did not have no he is the leader of the IMs yes so what makes different than other prophets so what what makes muhamad different than other IMS so the status
of prophet ibraim according to what we understand from the Quran and some some other hadiths he was the greatest Prophet after Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alai because of his amazing status Allah subhana gave him the status of IM not all prophets got the status some of them did one of those who did was prophet ibraim his message became Universal Allah T made him a universal leader and that's why he's he's the father of the abrahamic faiths right all monotheistic religions go through ibraim Alam his message was not limited to a geography a place Allah gave him
a universal message and that comes with the status of IM so we have many many other verses by the way see when you look at the word usually there's the word what with it meaning I appoint the imams many verses but we'll just it suffices us to quote this verse okay that's the word IM then we also have other words in the Holy Quran or for and Leadership one of them is waser who's the Wier of the Prophet the one who rules on behalf of the Prophet sallallahu alaih because your wasir basically means your main
Minister technically who's in charge of the Affairs after you or even in your life that's the meaning of wasir now when you look at the word wasir in the Holy Quran a wasir who rules right on behalf of Allah subhana wa tala who rules onf of religion is that by Divine appointment or people choose that it's by Divine appointment we have two verses that prove this and they're about Haron the brother of mam when Allah subhana tala sends Prophet Musa to the pharaoh to admonish him he made a number of requests from God one of
them was what oh Allah I want you to appoint a wasir a representative from my family someone who's related to me yes can we call him we can call him yes wasir is a na yes a na someone who represents you someone who rules on behalf of you your right arm the one who does things on your behalf these are all definitions for wasir this is in the Holy Quran I want har my brother to be who my this is the request he makes from God does Allah subhana wa ta'ala yes name yes he well
he made the request but in the end who chooses Allah so did Allah choose or no or he said you know what m i don't agree I want another wiir for you wellah verse 35 what does Allah State we have given M the book The toat Allah says we've granted M theab and we have made we have appointed his brother Haron as his wasir look at the pattern in the Quran Divine appointment what Divine appointment what other words do we have in for let's let's deal with the word khif what does the Holy Quran say
about the word khif by the way this analogy of Haron being the of M this is something we'll examine in the Hadith of the Prophet it's called in which the prophet says Ali is like to me like har was to mus we'll examine that later because that falls within the Hadith right now we're talking strictly about the Holy Quran but that's a very important analogy that the prophet makes the third word that we have over here is khif right I mean that's probably the most common word what does the Holy Quran say about khif is
it by people selecting someone or you the first khif you choose the second khif or it has to be by Divine appoint Allah subhah waala in the Holy Quran [Music] States oh we have appointed you as aif on Earth what do you notice about all these verses Allah see Allah uses different forms of the word what do you notice about all these terms it's by Divine appointment so if you ask other schools of thought what word do you want do you want IM the Quran says Divine appointment you want the word was the Quran says
Divine appointment you want the word khif the Quran says Divine appointment when it comes to Da being Theif because D had leadership right he wasn't just like a prophet who did not have power no he was a ruler Allah says that power and Leadership must be my by my appointment I have to appoint you the first which Allah assigned was prophet Adam Allah uses this word so when you look at the Quran and the spirit of the Quran any of these sensitive positions imif you name it what what what word do you want Allah says
I choose that there's no precedent in the Holy Quran in which people choose or the first khif just chooses the second Khalifa it must be by Divine appointment and what and there's consensus on this point there is consensus on this fundamental Point even in Sunni schools of thought that the kaiths who came after the prophet were not by Divine appointment even sunnis do not claim that the reason why Abu Bakr was chosen the Khalifa is because God had appointed him none of them say that it's very very clear in their theology so we ask them
if this is how you view IM leadership you name it where's your quranic foundation for them that's a question question that we pose valid question look at the history of the Quran the pattern in the Quran the spirits of the Quran all these positions has to be by Divine appointment and that's the position of the really it's the position of the Quran the position of that Allah must choose the IM is perfectly compatible with the Holy Quran and the other ideas that no you people choose the khif choose the Divine leader who succeeds the prophet
sallallahu alai that defies the Quran it contr quranic teachings yes there's a difference between a Democratic Society choosing someone to lead them in civil matters to organize life in society that's one thing but ruling in the name of the Prophet sallallahu alai is a different thing we're not talking about the first one in in the of the if you in a village in a country in a society you people ga and you choose your officials public officials in order to organize your political life your other you know aspects of your life that's not something we're
discussing because this Scholars have different views about that we're talking about someone who sits in the seat of that khif the one who is the leader of the um after the prophet sallallah alai this must be by Divine appointment and all indications in the Holy an point to that and this is really the position of the peace be upon them so this is one argument that we can make look at the words khif IM it's buying Divine appointment [Music]
