Hello, everyone welcome back to RAS aquaculture youtube channel. My name is Syikin. In this video we will be talking about probiotics which is to control pathogens that are commonly used in aquaculture.
Stay tuned ! Probiotic is a live microbial feed supplement to act as a nitrogen source improve the health organism by increasing resistance to disease and also to help increase its growth. The usage of probiotics in aquaculture is an alternative to control pathogens instead of using antibiotics.
Probiotics can be produced by various sources such as bacteria, brown algae, red algae, terrestrial fungi and marine yeast. There have a large number of probiotic products and we use probiotics biomate that contains strains of Bacillus sp. This probiotic is not only used in our biofloc system for shrimp, it is also used in our crab farming in the biofilter media.
In addition, probiotics can be consumed singly, in mixture and combination of probiotics and prebiotics. But, single-strain probiotics are ineffective compared to mixed- strain probiotics. Many conditions need to be carefully considered to make sure use of probiotics are effective such as the timing, dosage, and method supplementing the probiotics.
Probiotics should be added to cultured systems before disease outbreaks happen. By supplementing with feed or immersion are the ways to introduce probiotics into the shrimp. But supplementing with feed is more effective than immersion methods Overdose of prolonged use of probiotics might result in immunosuppression of non-specific immune system response.
We have reached at the end of this episode. For those in Malaysia we have attached the link to our shoppe account to purchase the biome probiotic We hope you enjoyed this episode on aquaculture chemistry. If you have any question regarding the content feel free to comment below.
