Should You Dress Your Age?

so what does it mean to dress your age and is it something you should care about in this video I'm going to talk about where dressing your age came from and why it's an outdated Concepts we'll also explore why some people look like they dress too young or too old and I'll give you style tips to help dress yourself at any age if you like this video at any point please feel free to drop it a like and now that's all out the way let's get into the [Music] video so the concept of dressing your

age comes from from societal norms and expectations from past eras for example during the Victorian and Edwardian periods strict dress codes were tied to age gender and social class younger people were expected to dress in a way that symbolized youth while older individuals were encouraged to adopt more conservative Styles and fast forward to the present day marketing plays a huge role in reinforcing these ideas clothing stores often have teen clothing sections and mature clothing sections fashion magazines and social Med media will often label people as dressing too young or mature and there's countless articles and

videos online telling you what you should wear and shouldn't wear depending on your age so it's drilled into us everywhere and it's the same kind of thing with the men's and the women's section in shops as well for example say if you're a man shopping in the men's section in a shop and you come across a cardigan that you absolutely love you go to buy the cardigan and on the way to the till you notice that the cardigan has been misplaced and it's actually from the women's section I think a lot of men would be

far less likely to buy that cardigan now they know it's from the women's section even though it's the exact same cardigan they loved and wanted to buy a few minutes ago and it's the same kind of thing with clothing that's listed for age groups if you're in your early 20s you might be put off buying clothing that's marketed towards a more mature audience even if you love the clothing and it doesn't really make sense to stop yourself buying clothing that you love because of where it's placed in a shop I can't lie though it's definitely

stopped me buying things that I've loved in the past but I'm trying to stop paying attention to it and has it ever stopped you buying something that you loved in the past let me know but I want to talk about the problems with conforming to society's expectations of what you should wear based on your age next so let's talk about it so first off dressing your age can be really limiting and you can lose parts of yourself your style becomes less about self-expression and more about conforming to someone else's expectations you're essentially following the her

and if you don't you run the risk of being judged the thing is the people that judge you are likely even more scared than you are to attract judgment themselves I can't take full credit for that line I heard something similar in a track by the musician Sully and it really resonated with me I'll leave the track Linked In the description below if you want to give it a listen but it was the part about him not dressing well that really resonated with me but going back to the video the leather jacket is one of

those items that always comes up whenever people talk about dressing your age I've read countless articles and watched countless videos where they say that you shouldn't wear a leather jacket over the age of 40 but what if you're 40 and you look 30 what then and what if you're 30 but you look 40 can you still wear a leather jacket and is it even possible for a man over the age of 40 to look good in a leather jacket spoiler alert of course it is but the problem isn't the jacket it's the people wearing the

jacket but we'll get into that more in just a second and by the way there's nothing wrong with reading those articles and watching those videos and following them to a te if that's what you want to do and there's nothing wrong with wanting to fit in it can take the pressure off thinking about what to wear and not everyone's into fashion but as long as it's your choice that's what matters and I'm also aware that our lifestyle and our jobs can play a huge role in our fashion choices and you might need to dress in

a certain way to suit both those things but both these things are very different from forcing yourself to wear something that you don't want to wear or stopping yourself wearing something that you do want to wear because society says so and if you do end up dressing in a way that isn't you to conform to what Society expects of you you'll never feel yourself you're actually likely to look even more out of place than if you just WN what you love but hopefully this will make more sense after the next [Music] section so in my

opinion when someone gets labeled as dressing too young or too old it's normally because they're trying to dress like someone they're not for example if someone was to wear street style clothes clothing whose character or image doesn't really fit the style their clothing is going to look completely out of place on them and people may say it looks like they're trying to dress too young but take someone like farel Williams who's over 50 Street style outfits look completely natural on him and he's often heavily praised for his style and look at Justin Bieber whether you

like his style or not he wears outfits that not a lot of people would be able to pull off yet they suit his Carefree attitude perfectly like if I was to wear this outfit I bet a lot of people would say it looks like I'm dressed like an old man yet he pulls it off perfectly hi it's editor Harry here and I just want to jump in to make something clear I'm aware Justin BBA and dead Sheeran are still young but that's why I've used them I'm using people at different ages to help explain that

age is irrelevant it's about dressing in a way that suits you and I bet if you were to put Ed Sheeran in Justin Bieber's outfits a lot of people would say it looks like Ed is trying to dress like a teenager even though they're about the same age because the style doesn't fit with his image hopefully this all makes sense but if not I'm sure it will after the next part where we look at Lenny Kravitz and Harry Styles so let's have a look at them so both men live and breathe music and that's clearly

reflected through their style they also often challenge social norms with what they wear and they're often heavily praised for their style but a lot of people would argue that a lot of what Lenny wears shouldn't be worn by a man his age he does wear leather jackets after all he also wears tight leather pants skinny jeans and sparkly tops which some would consider a massive no for anyone to wear yet he's listed as a very well-dressed man Harry Styles also gets a lot of praise for his style but he wears some things that Society may

say a child would wear and some things that an 80-year-old grandma would wear and if I try to wear what Lenny wears and what Harry wears it probably wouldn't suit me but it has nothing to do with my age it's because my style is more strip back and simple I definitely wear some of the items that they wear that fit into my style but if I went all out and dressed like either Harry or Lenny then I might have people say to me that I look like I'm trying to dress too young even though Lenny's

about 25 years older than me but neither of these men look like they're trying to dress too old or Too Young in my opinion they're just doing them and that's why their Styles work for them personal style is timeless so as long as you're wearing something that's authentic to you there's no clothing that's off limits and if you were to put either Harry or Lenny in a conservative Men's Wear outfit the outfit would probably look really out of place and they'd lose a lot of what makes them them and there's nothing wrong with this outfit

by the way I just feel it would be wrong for them and yes I am aware that Harry Styles does have a stylist but his stylist has styled him that's a lot of styles in a way that suits him [Music] perfectly and after all this should you dress your age well if that means wearing what feels right to you then go for it but if that means it's going to stop you wearing the things that you love and that make you you then I'd say no and just to to be clear I'm not saying that

you shouldn't look to others for inspiration or push yourself out your comfort zone both those things are very important for developing your own style what I am saying is pay attention to what you like and not what others are saying you should like at your age I feel like I've only just scratched the surface with this one and I feel like I've got so much more to say but i' be here forever so I'm going to end this one here please feel free to add anything that you feel I missed and we can carry on
