what's up everybody welcome back to the frank james channel today we're talking about the enneagram of personality you might have heard about these nine types the type one the type two is he just gonna say one through nine what is he doing if you're looking for a video to give you the basics the enneagram 101 you're on the right video the enneagram is a tool to help you understand yourself better to understand what's going on underneath the surface so that you can then find the best path forward for self-development self-growth becoming a better person by
the end of this video you'll have a pretty good grasp on what the enneagram is and be ready to learn more dig deeper before we dig into it this video is sponsored by audible you know that place where you can get an unparalleled selection of audiobooks in fact right now you can go to my link audibletrial.com fj and get a 30 day free trial which includes an audio book for free as for me i'm going through the wheel of time series it's a bunch of big fat fantasy books i feel like right now is a
great time to get an audio book don't you the enneagram has nine different types in fact that's what the word enneagram means it means nine figure nine pointed figure because you'll see the the picture of the enneagram is a circle with a little drawing inside of nine points the nine types each type centers around a struggle that they have and these are universal human struggles so you're going to relate a little bit to all of the types we have a little bit of each type in us but there's going to be one type in particular
whose struggle the central problem in their life is yours and that is your type enneagram teachers theorize that our personality type in the enneagram comes about during childhood because of some kind of trauma and so we spend the rest of our lives implementing certain behaviors that are supposed to protect us from that thing we're afraid of we also have a central desire that we're always trying to move towards the best way to figure out what your type is is to just learn about the types don't take a test just learn about the types it's not
it doesn't take long to do and you're going to find as you're going through the types you're going to get embarrassed really embarrassed about one of them that's probably your type right now i'm going to go through a rundown of all the types it's not going to be comprehensive enough for you to really know what your type is based on that but it's going to give you some ideas you're going to be like um i'm feeling suspicious about one or two or three of these types and that'll give you a starting point all right so
before we get into it as i arrange my notes on here and as you get a glass of water or something and strap yourself in for the roller coaster ride that lies before you let's take a quick commercial break and support this channel all right type one the perfectionist also called the reformer imagine the person in your life who is sort of like a goody two shoes they've got it all together why are they so perfect they always follow the rules they're always they always got everything straight in order their house is always perfect why
can't they just show some kind of weakness and that's because that's what they're all about they want to be good people ones are orderly practical they want to follow the rules they're very ethical but the thing is the other side of that is they can be judgmental and intolerant if you violate their ethics this comes from the fear of being a bad person so they make their lives miserable holding themselves to impossibly high standards type two is the helper or the giver imagine for the two the ideal parent someone who's always there for you someone
who swoops in takes care of you they got the food for you the casserole they're there to listen to you make sure you feel understood they'll wipe away your tears they're compassionate and giving but they can go too far and be like overly involved in your life and even manipulative and sometimes ironically selfish this is because the two's fear is that no one will love them or need them if they're not constantly giving of themselves type three is the performer or the achiever all right imagine if you will that guy back in high school who
was super popular he was the president he was the quarterback he was the lead in the fall musical 20 years later he's at the high school reunion kissing babies shaking hands everyone still loves them they are driven by success validation attention people slapping them on the back saying good job as well as status symbols they want to make sure everyone knows they're successful and that's because they're afraid they're just worthless without any of that they want and need the attention and validation because without it who are they then we move on to type four my
type yay the artist the romantic imagine a poet a guy a guy dressed in black sitting off by himself in the furthest corner of the coffee shop brooding melancholy writing something in a leather-bound journal the fours are driven to demonstrate that they are unique and different from other people through using their talents fours don't have to be artists but they often are and they have some unique thing that they're trying to do in the world to show that they're different and that's because they think they are uniquely different in a disadvantaged way as well they
feel like they're broken in a way that no one else is they feel like they don't have an identity and so they need to create something else that people can interact with as a stand-in for their identity number five type five is the thinker or the investigator think of the eccentric nerd the absent-minded professor maybe not so much the nutty professor uh maybe fives are driven to understand the world like intimately they want to understand how everything works why is everything happening they want to ask a bunch of questions and pull things apart fives often
prefer to understand the world in a conceptual way rather than a practical like hands-on experiential way the five sphere is that they are useless in just day-to-day life so that's why they're over-compensating they want to know all of these obscure things they feel confident in their ability to like talk about quantum physics but normal stuff like holding down a job or having a relationship they might feel like they they're useless they can't do it the type six is the loyalist or the skeptic some people say that the six is the most common of the enneagram
types like maybe as much as half of the world or sixes i don't know how do they arrive at that figure all i can say is that 75 percent of statistics are made up off the top of people's heads the six is what you might call a riot or die someone who will stick with you through thick and thin they're always there you know you can count on them they're not going to back down they're not going to abandon you sixes are very likable but they also kind of keep their distance from people they keep
their guard up but once you get to know them they're very loyal this so they're like hard to know but once you know them they'll never leave your side sixes are also very anxious and they want security that's why they latch on to people because they don't trust their own inner guidance and they're they're afraid they're going to get abandoned and be left to their own devices and their own inner guidance which they don't trust next we get to type 7 called the enthusiast or the optimist imagine a cheerful life of the party kind of
person the kind of person you just want to be around because they they lift you up they're so fun sevens are quick learners they are excited about new things they're very bold as well the bad side of this is that they will overdo everything because they're really afraid of missing out of not getting enough of being limited of being pinned in so they go overdrive all the time we move on to type 8 the challenger or the leader imagine like a drill sergeant it's the kind of guy who comes through the door you know that
he's going to start telling everyone what to do they're full of energy they're willful they can be combative they're not afraid to wrestle verbally it's like they expect you to want to jump in too and you know get into a verbal sparring match they're so quick to jump in and control people though because they're afraid of being controlled themselves to an eight it's like everything is about power every relationship every interaction all about power and they can get carried away by that then we come to the nine called the peacemaker or the mediator the nines
man they go with the flow they're easygoing they're down to earth they're the kind of person that when you ask hey what do you want to do they'll be like i don't know what do you want to do because in some ways they honestly don't have an opinion they're reassuring they're good at seeing different perspectives hence their moniker of peacemaker but the problem is they're out of touch with themselves and they really don't like conflict they will really do everything they can to avoid it interestingly if you look at the enneagram shape the nine is
at the top which sort of symbolizes how the nine tries to be all of the other energies they try to let everything else influence them flow through them without asserting their own individuality their own personality and this is because of their central fear which is being separated from others losing relationships because of conflict if you want to learn more here's a couple books that you are going to want to check out first of all we have the road back to you by ian morgan kron and suzanne stabile this one is a pretty easy read it's
