for this demonstration you will need a hot plate a hot sign spoon made of metal heat proof pad tray clear bowl half full of water a solid wax or paraffin and a towel remember when we had the story god with no hands and we talked about each tiny particle being given a set of laws to follow do you remember that from the story one law was that some came together to form solids some liquids and others gases sometimes which state a substance was in depended upon the temperature we also talked about how one of the
laws is that with heat the particles become looser and spread and with cold they are closer and cling more tightly together here i have a solid we are going to apply heat and watch and see what happens to this solid so so so so with enough heat my solid has become a liquid but watch with cold it once again becomes a solid the particles cling back together more closely for this demonstration you will need a tray on the tray various random solids for example a steel rod rock piece of terracotta a brick or rectangular prism
a brick positioned on the floor a hammer that you have hidden an index card or piece of wax paper towel and safety goggles before starting this place the brick on the floor and hide the hammer near enough that you can use it but so that the children cannot see it to keep the shards of terracotta from flying around the room once you hit it wrap the terracotta in the towel before hitting it with the hammer be sure to put the safety goggles on before hitting here i have some solids let's see if we can separate
them i can't do anything with this one maybe i'll have better luck with this one no no nothing with that one maybe this one oh no this one [Music] these solids cling together so tightly that i cannot separate them the only way to separate the particles of a solid is with force even then as we look at each piece the particles are clinging together so tightly that i cannot separate them and that's what solids are like you
