what do you do for a living i am the director of curriculum for code hs which is an online platform for teaching computer science so i manage a team of seven curriculum developers and work in basically like strategy and setting the direction for the team and how did you choose that that's what you wanted to do so i didn't choose it i kind of fell into it i basically went to school for engineering which i realized i didn't really love when i got there i went through and got my engineering degree but then i decided

i was going to join a program called teach for america after college because as i was going through engineering school i really became interested in teaching i taught for two years and then after that i basically made the transition to the private sector so working in edtech i started out at the same role code hs um basically um helping out with like the implementation so kind of more of a support role um but it was a startup so it was pretty small and uh as i was kind of helping out with different projects that were

unrelated to my role i became interested in the curriculum team basically asked to be transferred over and as the team grew they needed a manager and uh i put myself forward and uh yeah that's how i came to do what i'm doing very cool and what would you think about someone who's thinking about doing engineering in college what would you recommend for them in high school and then applying to college yeah um so i would say if you're interested in doing engineering i think that there's a lot of ways that you can explore what it

is um there are you know robotics programs there's a lot of like online learning if you're interested in computer science you can definitely seek out some of that stuff um so i would just look for ways like at your school or you know beyond your school that you can you know try this out um and you know i would say like i also think that engineering it's very different from science and math so i would encourage people who i think a lot of times people kind of uh exclude themselves like from even considering that they're

going to do engineering because they uh think that they're not you know like a science person or a math person it's really not the same thing um and so i would say uh also don't rule it out because you you don't you don't quite i would say you're you're too young to rule out anything right now um and what would you say is your favorite aspect of your current job my favorite aspect of my current job is i would say working at a smaller company it is nice because i get to try out different things

i work with a team of like very passionate people i think at a startup um maybe in comparison to like a larger company um there really isn't room for somebody who kind of you can't really coast by or like do kind of a poor job because everybody kind of needs to be working hard um and so i think like just i work with a lot of passionate dedicated people and um i also have the ability to like try new things because you know we might not have like if there's like a project that focuses on

this specific like specialty we might not have a person that has that specialty so um there's always like the opportunity for me to kind of jump in and try stuff out and how do you think what do you think about coding do you think that's something that you can learn on the fly or is that something that would be helpful to learn in college i mean i think like coding is a very useful skill to learn and i think again like i think a lot of people consider coding to be something that's related to math

and science and it really isn't um it is very different and coding is really like not to get on a high horse about it but i think it's going to be like a skill that in the future um kind of to do to be successful in any industry you're going to have to have a working knowledge of it because it is kind of like infiltrating like everything um and so having like a working knowledge of computer science even if you're not a coder um is going to be a helpful skill to have so i would

recommend trying it out even if you don't major in it or like want to pursue a career in it any last minute of advice um i think most if i like had to give career advice to a high schooler i would say like do things you're interested in and don't rule anything out and um yeah i think like a lot of my career has been kind of like just thinking like one opportunity ahead kind of and um it's worked out pretty well like i think like as long as you're doing things that like you feel

like you can do well and you want to do well um you you can generally like it's kind of a good path to be on i guess and that's my advice
