what I watching Britain from afar was an interesting experience I thought like I was watching an old film of 197s East Germany or something a government just chucking people in jail left right and Center an old granny a kid silly kid waving a flag in St George's flag in front of a a mosque we'll talk about him in a minute uh and you know more than a thousand people still waiting for their trials for what they did in these rights now of course you know standard issue got to say of course we don't condone crime
we don't condone riots we don't condone uh throwing bricks at the police and all that and some of these people perhaps deserve jail but doesn't it strike you as uh the Church of England's Bishop of Prisons uh someone called Rachel treweek she's also the bishop of Gosa calls for an end of this to this jailing frenzy doesn't all this strike you as way over the top for a country like Britain it is completely over the top and I mean in general I'm in favor of kind of zero tolerance towards antisocial behavior and uh all the
minor things that people have been hauled up for but I'm certainly not in favor of long prison sentences for people that have had no history of doing anything wrong falling foul of the law of of breaching anything in the past or indeed very young people who have made a mistake and are now being made a political example of um I don't believe in playing politics with children there's the case of a teenager who's received a long jail sentence for something relatively minor and all this would be a different type of debate I think if we
had plenty of prison capacity and we were routinely punishing really serious harms against the person with custodial sentences but the truth is were not so last week on talk Alex Phillips and I uh did a a piece on highlighting a number of a sorry number of cases in which pedopiles were not jailed they were allowed to walk free now these are people who have whose Behavior has basically caused and causes real harm to little ones how can those people quite regularly walk free with a a wrap across the knuckles and yet somebody who says something
hurty or nasty on social media is locked up behind bars for more than a year that just doesn't seem at all right to me there's something very wrong about that it is playing politics um Kia starma and his cabinet have absolutely panicked at the catastrophic start to his Premiership and have thought right how do we make sure this never ever happens again and I think it has had a very strong deterrent effect most people are certainly going to be thinking twice about what they do and don't put on soci social media um but I'm not
sure that overall it's the right response in a um in a setting in which were very very limited for prison capacity absolutely and uh amid it all the government few skates it refuses to discuss the reason for these protests which of course uh is the outof control uh immigration problem and the migrant crisis as they continue to pour across the channel it refuses to accept that that's the reason it won't even talk about it and so says this is a Law and Order issue and we are tough on crime as you say Isel yeah you're
tough on crime when it comes to somebody chucking a brick at the cops um perhaps you should be but you're not very tough on all the pedophiles and the violent criminals and the serious criminals that you've just let out of jail to make room for these riers not very tough on them are they this government is just so two-faced two tier care he's out of control what I think about this government is this so people say oh yeah K starma and his gang you know they pretended they weren't that leftwing you know and then they
got into power and they really are leftwing that's kind of true but I that that isn't the primary facet I think of this government the primary facet of this government is it wants us to know that the state is in control it is about state power all the tyrannies of 20th century history Mao uh uh Stalin uh East Germany were ostensibly left-wing regimes what what were they really they were statist uh you descent from the state and you go to jail that's what's going on here I think well it remains to be seen if there
as in quote good as those Dreadful regimes that you just mentioned or are they just going to be routinely incompetent let's not forget how this came about it came about under their watch due to a total breakdown of Law and Order and that happened on their watch and let's not forget as you say what actually lay behind all of this it's a fracturing of our society uh the the exposing of just how fragile the bonds are that bind us together when we've got so many people that don't even speak our language that come from completely
different cultures and crucially aren't signed up to our values and all that can disintegrate so very very quickly and instead of really launching a sophisticated response to this asking what is the basis of what happened in the last few weeks the government has just said oh well let's Chuck them all in jail they're just far right thugs that is in a and it will not solve the problem and these things are going to these these running SS are going to carry on uh over the next few weeks and months and things will only get worse
so when secure stas said or indicated things will get worse before they get better he meant it in the context of the economy I suspect that the reality is it's going to be in the context of the state of our country for some time to come as I tweeted yesterday I believe that things will only get worse I believe that bit
