welcome back to squa boox bands of smartphones and schools popping up across the country Julia borison joins us now to break it all down and to explain who's benefiting from the trend Beyond uh hopefully the students Julia exactly Andrew while a n a growing number of smartphone bands are creating a business Boom for more basic technology a trend that's affectionately called dump Tech now nine states have enacted laws or policies restricting K through2 cell phone usage in schools including four fully Banning smartphones in schools and here in Los Angeles which is the second largest US
School District a ban will be put into effect on smartphones and schools early next year with the US Surgeon General calling for warning on social media parents and schools are thinking about alternatives to the current trend of giving kids phones the National Institute of Health estimates that as many as 53% of children have a SmartPhone by age 11 now one company benefiting from smart phone backlash is called Yonder it makes pouches for students to lock up their phones during the school day and it's on track to double the number of pouches in use in schools
this year to 2 million pouches across all 50 states then there's gab which designs what it calls safe phones just for kids they tell us they've doubled the number of phones sold every year for the past 5 years another company called Light phone designed its streamlined devices which offer calls texting and navigation for adults who want to minimize dist exraction but the devices have been embraced by younger users along with some schools and parenting organizations that are working to drive adoption of these streamlined devices with teens now the market for these phones and other tools
to limit kids access to the internet and social media is expected to grow even further Now France just announced it's doing a trial ban on mobile phones and schools for kids under age 15 and Andrew they can roll it out across the country
