welcome again very pleased and glad to continue with you this course of literature which is uh aimed to cover the first year lmd uh syllabus or level right so we continue today with our second part of introduction about this gigantic field of knowledge which is literature now the first thing we may ask or wonder about is why do we study literature why do we devote all this time all these resources and all this interest right to this field of knowledge the answer is very easy because literature has many benefits it has okay multiple benefits today
we try to highlight okay the main uh prominent uh benefits one can uh you can say obtain from this uh Lively right field of knowledge field of knowledge now as you know that in literature in novels short stories poems and so on we find if you can say a kind of reflection all right reflection literature in fact reflects right and explores human ideas human beliefs human cultures human I don't know mindsets right human I don't know uh perceptions and so one and so forth that's why you find British literature American literature African literature Arab literature
and so on so through these different you can say trends with the literature right we can okay uh get in touch right with these different we can say corridors right in this field example Jane Austin as a British writer acquaints us with the aristocratic class system in her Society right we have ch a also in his noart acquaints us with uh his traditional African civilization all right uh also we have in American literature great gby right F Geral also introduces to us right that hedonistic American lifestyle right of influence and so on uh also the
Irish also produces to us uh different characters in duin right by Jo who uh you can say reflects and tries to uh transmit all right the archetypes of the Irish characters okay in his collection of chies Dublin so when we interact with these texts with these pieces of literature right we can exchange views about okay the human ideas cultures perceptions and so on all right so the this is the first benefit good another also important benefit from literature when we read literature when we uh can say involve ourselves when we live literature okay liveat is
that it helps us discover human ways of understanding life it helps us understand life find ways for a better understanding of life for instance uh when we read uh Earnest hingu ways The Old Man and the Sea we feel that ining wants to deliver his message through his work saying that the key element or the key uh factor for success in this world is persistence like what Santiago or how Santiago the old man persists okay to hunt the fish right to hunt the fish this is the first we can say lesson we can get from

different okay from us in terms of time in terms of place and in terms also of culture so in literature we read about characters we learn about writers like in autography okay who are far from us in terms of maybe time maybe place maybe ideology maybe a perception and clear so we learn from them right many things things we exchange okay through reading this piece of literature with them indirectly write their experiences and their okay uh all what they have liit okay they have liit all right good uh also another important uh benefit all right
we can you can say infer from or get from literature is that it helps us discover ourselves better when comparing ourselves to uh these characters we are about okay because when we read a novel short story we always imagine or you put yourself sometimes in his shoes all right you say what if I were him what if I were him here you just try to imagine uh this situation you compare yourself to him you uh try you find even okay some points of weakness about yourself okay example you can't do what this character does so
here discover your points of weakness your points of strength also and so on and so on and so forth uh also another important benefit we get from Reading literature is that it reinforces our knowledge right our knowledge and our Insight all right about different movements of literature different areas we about different historical eras we about uh different characters we about different writers which are okay expressed through their art through their works and so on so uh we know more about Victorian literature thanks to CH de's novels we know more about also I don't know uh
the two World Wars through reading for example write novels about wars okay likeu uh okay uh novels also we learn more about African literat when we read okay too when we read about CH all right also we know more about the 18th century and its romanticist mood right and 19th century with its realist mood right and so one and so forth uh now this okay Bens our knowledge okay and also Insight another also interesting uh feature or benefit we can get from is that it sharpens our senses it sharpens our senses especially P poetry tends
to reflect the human you can say Pro perceptions Impressions ideas Reflections Sensations that's why it makes us more sensitive in the positive sense of course clear more aware more uh don't know uh developing more sense of beauty right uh more sense or better sense of beauty and so on it also creates for us that ferti imagination when read about different count different era science fiction I don't know uh strange creatures right which mentioned in these works like the elves like the monsters and so on so here we create our okay fertile imagination thanks to literature
thanks to literature and also we uh you can say refines our Taste of beauty our Taste of Beauty thanks to literature when we read these coherent and well uh okay expressing pieces of Art and these muscle PES too good also we uh learn about or literature in general gives us okay that sense of justice sense of justice when you read okay in the body of Rich about the world's injustices the world Injustice it helps us here okay take if you can say fair stance right just stance right to side with the right against the wrong
okay right against the wrong right example read germinal for IM zah and we learn about suffering of those minors here we develop that sense of justice against tyranny against Injustice against uh know exploration of work and so on also we read animal farm for George Orwell and we find okay that false uh Moto right or slogan of all men are equal right uh which is in fact okay only can say an illusion right a trick an illusion which is uh you can say uh disclosed by its second part but some men are more equal than
others are more equal than others so through Animal Farm we learn that okay the world uh is full of Injustice right and some of the uh claims and you can say assumptions about Justice are themselves based okay and set just okay for the sake of practicing and Justice against against others so here we create our awareness our Consciousness right and okay also we have an idea about the ideology which may be manipulated to serve okay certain sides against okay other sides good uh also literature is a rich source of entertainment of entertainment right as you
now we read among the theories which uh study right uh function of literature we find those who say that literature is meant okay to entertain and amuse readers that's why okay many writers adopted this view okay and notion and they produced very interesting and amusing pieces of of art example you can read uh to Mark TW okay Mark TW and his fascinating novels right H or also Mark Tom Tom so these are very entertaining okay pieces of Arts also we can read child literature okay which is very rich also very amusing and so on uh
and so forth also another important benefit uh of literature is that it broadens our Horizon okay it broadens our Horizon through uh the different end rotations you know but when we read a text right we uh understand it in our own way right and when another person reads the same text he also understands it okay in his own way so here we have what we call a multiplicity of interpretations and these interpretations will enrich the text in itself because the text right is uh we can say uh what we read in it all right text
it is the way how it is read okay and how it is interpreted not only doesn't have only one fixed meaning all right it has as many meanings as uh readings it has as many meanings as readings and you know the famous which says don't trust the writer but trust the text okay trust the text here of course we're going to focus mainly on the text and explore it richness through the different interpretations okay we can get from reading this or that text or poem or play or so clear good uh and every has his
own background has his own ideology his own right uh mindset his own perceptions okay and theoretical uh background okay which uh participates okay to uh vary and enrich discussion and the uh interpretation of this or that text also literature helps us to understand history but it even changes history okay it even changes history because first uh we read for uh the old right uh uh literary works of the Greeks or works of don't know uh the Romans right on the works of know in the recent centuries also Middle Ages and so on we have an
idea about okay what was going on okay in that era and at that time also for example it can change history we can take example for instance with uh the novel of haret Ste right that black woman right who uh wrote her Masterpiece ancle th's cabin ancle P's cabin this novel okay uh adopted that abolitionist stands against slavery okay and it evoked and it uh contributed to uh the outbreak of the American Civil War okay American Civil War uh it you can say seal the public right against slavery right and linol American president at the
time okay when he met Ste he said this is the woman who or the lady who started the war okay who started the war so she could you can say steal right and move right the Americans to fight and to combat slavery in all the American okay uh territory American territory also can mention also the novel ofon s which is jungle jungle by S who was at the beginning journalist and he was s to uh make a report about uh the me industry in America but later discovered lot of corruption lot of violation okay uh
okay concerning uh the meat industry and its uh hidden practices and Noel The Jungle which could right steer also the public in America and even the authorities and the officials uh and it led to uh enacting right uh certain laws okay to organize and to fight the corruption right in this sector of meat industry in America at the beginning of this Century uh also another important benefit of liter that it expands our vocabulary right when we read is and the first and the major source of vocabulary in all fields of knowledge is literature it is
very rich okay it is very rich because it concerns many cultures right many tongues many nationalities that's why we also say that literature has no tongue literature has no language literature has no nationality clear literature is worldwide is universal right is universal it has no tongue no language particular no important mean it has no race right it is a creature which breathes everywhere and every time okay uh through uh the human artistic production the human artistic production clear that's why we should enrich ourselves okay from this generous Source Ro contains uh multiplicity and panoramic uh
cultures Traditions histories I don't know experiences of humans also and human beings are recorded and reported in literature that we need to read to learn okay to learn also literature uh improves our ability okay to write and to reason it teach us okay it teaches us it has also the dtic function dtic function which teaches us okay how to reason when we read about different characters compare between them between ourselves all right see those hardships they had gone through all right see those forces which are in Conflict see example how right the series of events
are going on right and how hardships how betrayals how human disillusionments Okay happen here we develop that sense of Reason clear we now learn without experiencing this in reality everything so this offers us to can say uh a beforehand step right to learn about how to deal with life hardships how to reason to solve our problems and to uh find better solutions to our problems to our problems so these are generally okay the main benefits okay we can highlight about uh why we learn why we literature uh I hope that okay these benefits are satisfactory
