with home decor I've been pretty clueless but at the same time I'm obsessed with organization and in this video I'll share the five secret principles that enable me to marry the two not the least of which is this miracle right here behind these doors starting with principle one urgency zones from Zone 1 to zone four of all the things we own some are used daily some are used less than once a year but one rule although obvious is difficult to implement and that rule is that everything we own must have a dedicated home the solution
to this problem is to organize all the dedicated homes themselves into urgency zones so taking a look at this Ikea Billy bookcase setup Zone one has no barriers to access because it's stuff I use most frequently which means it's technically also always the most urgent so this bowl is where my wallet keys and other everyday carry go because I have two jobs outside of YouTube depending on what the day's plans are there's a dedicated pouch for each type of work and on the side of the bookshelf still Zone one because it has no barriers to
access is this 3M hook for my everyday carry work bag so if Zone one are the things I use every day it might seem natural that zone 2 would be things that get used say once a week but remember it's not frequency zones but rather urgency zones as we open the doors on this bookshelf you will see a ton of stacked boxes but on the most convenient shelves as in the shelves I don't need to crouch down or reach high up to get to are these open top easy access bins to respect your time I
won't go through all of them but to give an example the only things I own that still use replaceable batteries are remote controls whether for my TV stuff or my car keys I probably need to change them less than once every 2 years but when I do need to change them it feels very urgent so eliminating the barrier to get to them makes that urgency quickly and easily resolvable a side note but this particular open top bin has proven to be one of the best things I've ever implemented and you can see the label on
it reads don't know looks important it's currently empty but this is where that random screw you find on the ground goes or whatever the heck this thing is it's in zone 2 because out of nowhere say when I break out this tripod I haven't used in a while and when wonder why that one leg is loose I'll suddenly remember and it feels urgent and this don't know looks important bin has been a huge stress and timesaver Zone 3 are the things that have sporadic frequency of use but in general never feel urgent for example I
use the contents of this flatlay props box way more frequently than I use batteries the box is filled with my most frequently used trinkets that make my tabletop shots a bit more visually interesting but it never feels urgent because when I film or take flatl photos those camera sessions are always planned in advance not urgent at all Zone 4 are the things that are not only never urgently accessed but also accessed very infrequently for example Zone 4 in this bookshelf setup are things like warranty documentation instruction manuals or the last 7 years of tax filings
up at the very top or sentimental stuff like some of my late father's belongings and other family momentos at the very bottom Oh and before I forget in case you're curious these labels are Aver's 6468 labels and specifically are easy to remove since I may reorganize and further optimize in the future if you don't use Photoshop or illustrator for Avery's downloadable templat I have made a Google doc version that you can edit for them instructions down in the description I hope it's painfully clear by the way that I am not saying these 6468 Ikea Billy
bookshelves upera bins or cugus boxes are going to be right for you the concept of urgency zones should be pretty obvious by now but the form factor can be anything from old shoe boxes to clear Dollar Store containers this naturally bleeds into principle two show and hide and it should come as no surprise that when it comes to the meeting point of both home organization and home decor visible clutter is the culprit that makes our spaces look messy and feel congested so covering as much as possible is of course the solution this is where doors
drawers cabinets and curtains come into play I briefly touched on the Loven computer monitor stand from Ikea that I use instead as a shelf splitter it enables clean storage and organization while allowing me to take advantage of any exposed shelf vertical space to play with Decor a side note by the way which can be a pain point in our age of endless gadgets and technology is charging and more specifically unsightly jumbles of cables with a simple hole saw drill and cheap grommets typically meant for office desktops that you can find on Amazon you can see
on this shelf down here hidden behind the bookshelf doors is a charging Shelf with this power bar and with the grommet in the door allows me to feed my computer and phone cable out of the door so I can keep all things charged without this cable clutter being visible to take it a step further adhesive back velcro is a miracle this power bar is so confidently anchored to the Shelf because I've stuck one piece of the adhesive back velcro to the Shelf itself and the other to the bottom of the power bar so it stays
put and I can plug and unplug things to it without it or anything else shifting around Pro tip if you decide to go this route I recommend using grommets that are at least half an inch in diameter since some plugs are quite bulky and the 3/8 inch grommet I used here does not allow some of the plugs for the devices that I own to pass through with ease next up is principle three and it's the rule of Threes this is much less of an organization tip and much more about decor for whatever reason clusters of
Threes are most naturally pleasing to the eye whether straight up Decor like this shelf over here or combination organization and Decor like these shell here and here you can see that clustering three primary items makes them look natural and pleasing to the eye without being too cluttered nor too sparse for cases when there are too many things that need to be out in the open for example my living room coffee table houses all my media remote controls a coaster set as well as a productivity timer which combined is obviously more than three items this is
where the concept of blocking does wonders where for some reason this looks cluttered but just putting all my remote controls onto a tray causes them to be visually perceived as one item three in total on the coffee table speaking of a ton of physical items it's on to principal 4 which is do sweat the small stuff the smallest random physical items are the bane of achieving true home organization for example here are some of my pocket knives and this particular one came with these spare parts in the Box there's no way a year after buying
this knife I'd possibly remember which of all of my pocket knives these parts are for and this is just one of hundreds of examples we all might have have at our homes the solution is to sweat the small stuff by using small label baggies so with that pocketknife example the moment I unbox it I can take this little baggie that has a blank writable square on it jot down nafs Lander two spare parts on the baggie drop them in and put it into my EDC Box contents bin and because I'd rarely need to access it
get that bin back to its inconvenient Zone 4 spot on this low Crouch to access shelf and speaking of zones remember zone two in zone 2 I have an entire easy to access lidless bin here for various sizes of label baggies and dedicated pens because whenever I buy anything new that comes with accessories I won't need it feels urgent to me to make sure I get them squared away with organized confidence and like everything else you can find the baggies I use linked down in the description below this naturally leads us to principal 5 which
is the nightly five and it's real simple the reason why there must be a dedicated home for literally everything is so that we can maintain organization and cleanliness with ease and once there is a dedicated home for all the things we own no more more than 5 minutes is needed to return everything with ease and confidence if we stay consistent and do it every single night working on YouTube videos are where my place gets the messiest and most cluttered I mean forget filming for a single thumbnail alone I may need to use 20 individual items
and without a dedicated home for each quelling my home organization ocds would be impossible but with the system in place even on days where I need to grab 50 individual items to film I've never needed more than 5 minutes to return everything back to their dedicated home now it'd be absolutely absurd for me to assume that my manifestation and the specific items I use in my system are right for you in other words although all the tools are mentioned and linked down in the description the last thing I want is for you to make kneejerk
purchases that may not be right for you the goal of this video has been much less about the tool than much more about the system itself and speaking of the system I am in the process of making a ridiculously detailed guide complete with planning sheets and video tutorials that includes everything from clothes paperwork consumables kitchen everything and if you think you'd be interested in that be sure to sign up for the launch discount at the link in the description below and yet almost none of this would matter if mental clutter is currently more negatively impactful
on you and if you want to gain mental Clarity to regain control of your life today you will definitely want to watch this video right up here but if this is too much organization talk then this video down here is a one for you I'll leave them both on screen for a few seconds so you can choose which one to watch next but while you're deciding consider liking subscribing and hitting that Bell so you'll be notified the moment new videos just like this one dropped
