Booker T Washington went on to found Tuskegee Institute which was a major Hub of of creating the kind of leadership that the South uh thought appropriate for African-Americans so in agriculture in industrial training or the industrial Arts he in a sense leveraged that Institute uh on the basis that the young people he was training would prove their medal in society would prove their worth by their hands and by their heart and not by agitating for full and equal participation in society he famously gave a speech in Atlanta in 1895 he had a exposition of white
business owners we can be one as the hand but as separate as the fingers assuring them uh that the meaning of freedom in that moment in that moment after the debacle of of reconstruction which was not a debacle at all from the standpoint of black political participation giving birth to compulsory public education by putting in state constitutions the real meaning of democracy nevertheless he assured them that in the 1890s just as Jim Crow was codifying and becoming real that they had no worry from him or his students or the Future Leaders functioning on this Paradigm
that they would make no demands on on on sitting at dinner with their daughters or going to school with their school children or demanding uh equal pay for equal work um that they would work behind the scenes um in their own communities on their their own farms and ultimately prove themselves worthy down the road eventually of full participation
