[Music] hey everyone welcome back to lumber capital lug yard yesterday we got four and a half inches of rain for most that means getting wet as you run from your home to your car but as any farmer knows whether you farm trees or crops that means potential halt on operations [Music] in pa we have historically gotten a lot of rain in september whether it is from the remnants of hurricanes or the jet stream dipping in a manner that draws moisture up from the south creeks here can get very high it was only one week ago
10 years prior that our house flooded and we had to escape [Music] rainy weather is more than just an inconvenience for us loggers it can pose as an environmental concern as well because we are the ones harvesting the land the responsibility falls in our hands to ensure that there is no erosion even when trying your absolute hardest it is easy to disturb wet topsoil which can wash into waterways and become an issue [Music] for this reason there are rules set in place to protect the environment that can have all logging shut down until the forest
dries up [Music] because we were expecting rain we took a day to fix up our diversion ditches on the log site the boss always says that it is very important to have good water management diversion ditches are channels that are built for the purpose of collecting and transmitting surface runoff without these ditches in place the skid roads would wash out instead of smoothly running off the mountain the water would sit and soak in causing it to be a muddy mess you still aren't able to log for a couple days but the ditches at least speed
up the drying process [Music] it would seem that our ancestors had it right back in the day farmers would become sawyers in the winter when the ground was frozen and perfect for logging and milling while the hot wet summer days were spent sowing seeds [Music] unfortunately today most bloggers don't have that option [Music] [Laughter] [Music] when our customers come to us aggravated that our lumber inventory is low we tell them that it is due to rain sometimes people get confused with that explanation [Music] there are so many steps between a standing tree in a vast
forest and your beautiful board and baton sighting [Music] so many opportunities for things to go wrong so many miscalculations and wrong judgment calls but the largest obstacle by far is the one that we can't solve or fix mother nature after all is a force to be reckoned with and to be respected at all times she has the ability to wipe away an entire week's worth of work with one fell sweep of her mighty hand [Music] as loggers it is our main struggle to learn to work with the land instead of against it as is the
