public speaking used to terrify me You know that feeling when you're standing in front of a crowd and all the attention's on you your voice starts to shake and your body starts trembling and then all you hear in your head is your own inner voice saying to you "What the hell was I meant to say next? " "Oh my god have you experienced that before? " I'm sure you have That's why you clicked on this video right back in 2018 this was one of the most important days of my speaking career I was about to speak to an audience of over 38,000 people My mind was racing My body was freaking out And I remembered I went to the toilet more than 12 times The urges kept coming And that's also when I learned that nervous poops were a real thing And at that moment I was about to break down But I didn't I ended up crushing that talk And people loved it I even got a standing ovation which was crazy Hundreds of people came up and complimented me The five tools that I'm about to share with you in this video saved me on that day And if you ever felt nervous speaking up in meetings on a stage or even in a group setting this video is going to help you massively And look before I share the five things I want you to know that the fear you feel when you're publicly speaking whether it's a group of hundred or a group of three that fear that you feel it's completely normal In fact it's human that you feel that The question really then is how do you turn fear into courage i mean courage is far more useful than fear Fear requires one more ingredient for it to become courage And what is that missing ingredient the missing ingredient is action Action is that missing ingredient And this formula here helps you understand that courageous people courageous people don't do things in the absence of fear Courageous people feel the fear and they do it anyway Don't let fear hold you back from speaking up at work Don't let fear hold you back from sharing your ideas sharing your dreams because your words have the potential to change people's perspectives even change people's lives And dare I say you may even potentially change the world with the things you say The first thing I believe is the most important thing breathing And the most powerful breathing technique that I still use to this day that I will share to the day I die is the Wimhof breathing technique So if you don't know what that is you need to look up Wimhof's breathing technique Now I do three cycles of this Oh my goodness it completely calms me psychologically and it calms me physiologically And for those of you who don't know what the breathing technique is 30 deep breaths 30 of those followed by a breath hold And then when you feel the need to breathe then you do a deep breath in Hold for 15 seconds Breath out And then you repeat the cycle You can literally feel the anxiety leave your body And if you've never tried this before try it It's free It's fast And it's unbelievably effective That usually fixes 80% of my nerves I always dread doing it because breathing in that way takes a lot out of you However every single time I do it afterwards I'm like "Oh I'm so glad I did that.
" Right but before I do it I'm like "I don't really want to do it. " do it Second thing that I do is I manage the adrenaline Often when you go on stage doesn't have to be 37 and a half thousand or 38,000 people even if 100 people 50 people it's already nerve-wracking enough right when you're going on stage and you're about to speak to lots of people your body goes into fight or flight And when your body goes into fight or flight it pumps you full of adrenaline So you've got that energy ready so you can either fight or you can run away And if you don't manage that adrenaline it means your body is full of all of these chemicals and you don't know what to do with it and it shows up as shaking because there's just so much energy ready to go This is biology And if you don't burn the adrenaline off stage it's going to burn you while you're on stage Have you ever felt this before where your knees start to wobble and your hands start to shake a little bit and you're like "What the why is my hand shaking so much? " And then as a result of your body shaking what else shakes your voice shakes Sometimes people are so perplexed that they're thinking to themselves "Why is my voice shaking?
" The only way for your voice to be shaking is if your body is shaking And then the only way for your body to be shaking and the only reason your body is shaking is because you haven't managed the adrenaline Go for a brisk walk Do some star jumps Do some push-ups That helps release the adrenaline so that you don't show up on stage like a shaky leaf Third thing for me the third thing is a mindset shift Ask yourself this question In order for you to be nervous who are you likely to be focusing on are you focusing on yourself or you're focusing on other people even if right now you're sitting there thinking to yourself "Oh it's when I think about other people. " Yeah Yeah Yeah But it's you thinking of other people and you're wondering "What are they thinking of me? " So you're not really even thinking of other people You're thinking of yourself And this was the biggest unlock for me psychologically in that when I am the most nervous that's when I am the most self-conscious That's when I'm thinking about the self So if I want to be less nervous in other words less self-conscious I have to become audience conscious The more I focus on the audience the less self-conscious I'll be because there's no cognitive capacity left to be conscious on the self And think about the people you're about to serve So for me that crazy day speaking to so many people I just thought to myself all right there are so many humans V you will never have an experience like this again where you get to serve this many people at the same time Focus on giving your best focus on how many lives that you can change for And I kept focusing on the audience members and I would peek outside and I would see the audience and it would scare me again But I go "No no look at those faces Look at those faces These are the people that you can potentially help because if you help shift the way they communicate this is going to unlock incredible futures for them It will unlock their dream jobs It will unlock deeper relationships.
" And the moment I thought that way I became less and less and less nervous And that shift of focusing on the audience instead of myself that changed everything Not just on stage but in everyday conversations too Because the same nerves that show up when you're in front of a crowd they show up when you're being put on the spot asked a tough question or trying to connect with somebody new I've put together a free 2-hour training called Conversational Mastery It dives deeper in how to stay calm clear and confident when you're speaking no matter the setting Just click the link in the description or check out the pinned comment below I'll put the link there too Number four Number four is I focused on the things that I could control a very stoic thing But I focused on the things that I could control So when you think about the things that are in your control I can focus on my thoughts and feelings I can focus on my body language And I can focus on the way I use my voice So in those moments I I thought to myself okay so you could kind of focus on these three things right now These are three things you can control Now out of these three things which one is the most difficult to control thoughts and feelings body language or voice i mean you think about this right now Which one is the hardest to control it's thoughts and feelings This is one of the most difficult things for human beings to control Otherwise why would you be sad why are you stressed why are you frustrated why are you feeling anxiety right and yet when we are in these situations where we're nervous we try to go for the one that is the most difficult to control We go "Oh why don't you feel more confident oh why am I feeling so nervous come on stop feeling nervous Stop feeling nervous. " Now you're in a situation where you're fighting a losing battle So instead of trying to control the way you think and feel in those situations focus more on your body language and focus more on your voice Because when you look a certain way when you sound a certain way it's going to gradually influence the way you feel You don't think your way into feeling better You act your way into it Because if I use my voice like I am right now in a way that makes me sound more confident I'm sending confident vibrations all through my body And then when I look more confident with my body I'm sending auditory signals visual signals to my brain that I'm confident And what does that do it gradually makes you feel more confident In those situations focus on the way you look focus on the way focus on the way you sound And if you look a certain way you sound a certain way you feel a certain way you'll start thinking a certain way Now the fifth thing is your body literally doesn't know the difference between fear and excitement but your mind does This one thought can completely flip your experience Imagine yourself winning the lottery Are you kidding me you just won $2 million You're kidding me This is real I can't even speak right now At that point you'll probably start stuttering You'll probably start shaking You'll probably start sweating Your heart's going to race Your mouth is going to go dry You'll be freaking out Now notice what happens when you go up on stage and you're about to speak in front of a thousand or 2,000 people It's the exact same symptoms Your body doesn't know the difference between the anxious symptoms and the excitement symptoms They're the same thing Why not trick your brain and just label it as being excitement i've been in situations where I'm out on stage and I'm starting to freak out and I go "No no no Vinn These are just the these are just the symptoms of excitement.
