The Unshakeable Kingdom | Dr. Matthew Stevenson

The word of the lord comes expressly to us from hebrews the 12th chapter today verses 18 through 29 in the english standard version and around the world right now pastor josh the all nations worship assembly we're dealing with the theory stranger things and the concept of the stranger things is this you can find the gospel in the point in the place of tension Of two coexisting realities scream yes prophetess katie i adore you it's so good to see you um there is a tension place between that that is eternal and that that is realistic sometimes

when you try to educate people about the eternal it is overshadowed by what they think is reality but there is a such thing as eternal realism things can exist eternally and i also Want to use this phrase coexist this morning may bore you if you don't have a love for the word of god i'm just going to let you know i i i i'm pro my grandfather's probably rolling in his grave because i don't intend to roll around and scream he got up i think we're resolved about that and that's an honor to my the

legacy that i'm born up there is a greater mystery though that we've not cracked into which is the Reason for the resurrection i think we celebrate the event we don't understand what it was done to achieve and so i want to give you some of that today we know we identify we understand that he got up just so that they won't call me a heretic everybody in the room lift your hands and scream real loud he got up we know that we're there that is the fundamental Reality and proof of the christian faith but there's

something that we need to navigate deeper into why did he do it to whom did he do it for was it a statement of ego was it something that just needed to be demarked on the fabric of history or was there a deeper meaning to the resurrection i want to give you that in the concept of stranger things because what it means to us is that There were always two things happening simultaneously you have something happening in real time and something happening in eternity christians would be more mature if they understood the eternal but because

we've been inundated in the time the realm of time the scope of time time is where comparison is time is where envy is time is where jealousy is time is where strife is say yeah when You are timed and you live your life on schedule and the measurement and the increments of time you miss out on the greater benefit that comes from understanding and being motivated by that which is eternal but but the glory that's going to be manifest through your life is not a timed glory it's an eternal weight of glory i don't think

we understand the eternal And so going to the book of hebrews is by very deliberate design because when it comes to eternal things we don't have a more important book in hebrews chapter 12 go to verse 18. i'll read it for you and then i'm going to give you some principles are you with me hebrews 12 verse 18. this is in the english standard verse and i'm sure that many of you aspiring theologians will appreciate this For you have not come to what may be touched a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest

and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to him i'll clarify that in a minute for they could not endure the order that was given if even a beast touches that mountain it will be stoned indeed so terrifying was the sight that Moses said i tremble with fear but you have come to mount zion and to the city of the living god the heavenly jerusalem and to the innumerable angels and festival gathering and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled hallelujah

in heaven and to god the judge of all and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect and to jesus The mediator of a new covenant and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of abel my god see that you do not refuse him who is speaking current tense for if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven At that time his voice shook the earth but now he has promised yet once more

watch this i will shake not only the earth but also the heavens this phrase yet once more indicates the removal of things that are shaken that is the things that have been made in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain therefore here we go let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom That cannot be shaken and thus let us offer to god three things worship reverence all why our god is a consuming fire father help us to preach this in jesus name just for a little bit very fundamentally we're talking about the

unshakeable kingdom the unshakeable kingdom kins we have so far to go with trying to conceptualize the message Of jesus can i shock you and jesus's message was not himself he left that for us he left that to the apostles his message was one that's been developing and evolving and extending for several centuries and we still not cracked it is the message of the kingdom of god and we don't understand the direct correlation between the resurrection and the kingdom of god the resurrection was a kingdom Event can we say that together the resurrection was a kingdom

event let's say it again the resurrection was a kingdom event now historically prophet reach that's important for you to understand because if you go into why jesus was tried it was for high treason it was the understanding that he was representing a kingdom that was going to be Invading at some point so even his opponents and even his adversaries saw his arrival his message his movement as some form of invasion or some form of territory from one foreign place to domestic territory and ground they did not understand when he sat on the cross pay attention

my kingdom is not of this world and he substantiates it by saying if it were my angels would be fighting You so then when you have to cerebrally conceptualize a kingdom that has no earthly limitation that has no earthly confine and or demographic it opens you up to the reality of whether or not christianity is a religion or not that perhaps we were not saved to be a part of a different religious standpoint and we were not saved and transformed and delivered to be a part of a Different worldview but we were translated as what

paul says from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of his dear son this is vitally important that you get before you conceptualize the absolute alliterations and the mystery that is in the book of hebrews let's do some diligent work again if you're not a student this will bore you first of all we don't know who wrote hebrews I've been studying the word of god for most of my life and the common context or the common conversations is paul you know there are too many shadows there too many mysteries are too many types for it

to not have been paul but paul has apostolic companions like apollos some even say it may have been barnabas the eloquence of the book implies that it could have been either of those And the reason they assume that it's one of those three is because the writer assumes and alleges jordan that the audience of this letter understands everything about old testament history so they do very little introduction about the story of abram and the story of moses and all of that they just plainly speak in in custom To this particular audience and so we don't

exactly know who authored this the the audience is a bit ambiguous but what we do know is that there are people under oppression listen to what i'm showing you this letter is appropriate for you and i today in america this letter is directed to an address to jewish christians that are under extreme persecution That are in temptation of returning to tradition to abandon truth the safety i'm getting there hey laquante the safety of tradition the predictability of tradition provided for them as it were a scapegoat from having to cope with a hard truth and so

the writer starts to expodulate through our hard truth now heggy i'm not a seminary professor Yet but but but the truth in this book is not hard to me because the hard truth is jesus the whole intent of the book of hebrews is to prove your word is life to establish to announce to elevate the superiority of jesus christ what the writer is defending is the temptation watch me to return to judeo-christianity Is easier than being fully inundated and baptized in the mystery of christ because the ceremony is more easy to conceptualize than the christ

so you've got this jewish group of christians that believe in jesus they just want to appease the culture and not have to answer unnecessary questions about why they don't do what the others do they want to be able to discombobulate The coagulation between the two worlds and realities and be able to stand in mixed water in a mixed paradigm we are this and that scream preach we want moses and the messiah scream preach we we believe that you have to be circumcised in the flesh and the heart appreciate what paul said but we're going to

anchor ourselves in the rich tradition of judea nature Because we don't want to have to explain the gospel and so when we get to the book of hebrews it opens up with the story of abram the author basically narrates the old testament genre and story line starts with abram and then he goes to how moses how how abram's family pay attention becomes the nation of israel and then it goes on to see or say how moses led These same people out of slavery from egypt and then it moves into a much deeper conversation which is

the real meat you've got to be mature to hear what i've got to say today we're dealing with from sinai to zion the two biblical mountains where events took place one of which is the representation of the resurrection the other is a representation of the death Sinai and zion and the author of this book pivots is in a very very very unique way because sinai is where god gave through moses what we know as the law the decalogue this is how you appease me this is how you reflect me these are the offerings these are

the days these are the duties these are the obligations scream yeah these are the tasks these are the prerequisites these are the rules The this this is how you live this is the constitution scream yeah this is the the policy for behavior and acting on me and then from sinai they go into the wilderness the wilderness now starts to confront everything they heard at sinai because when you know when you go through a pandemic i'm sorry a wilderness everything that was taught to you Pre-pandemic pre-sinai is confronted very directly you won't help me but but

you start to say you know what maybe moses got it wrong maybe those miracles were just some form of fat fam maybe here's the worst one the new testament concept kenza is backsliding but the old testament conversation is perhaps the leaks and onions of pharaoh Were better than living and walking and moving and breathing by faith what is this issue of faith i'm preaching the book of hebrews to you it can it not be that we can be saved by the offerings we give and the and the works we do and the morality by which

we live or can we behave in the hedonism and and what feels natural and normal to us leave the whole faith concept behind and live by Effort and live by attempt so if you break this down you've got a persecuted people scream yes because they look like fools they're in the wilderness no seeming provision invisible bread called manna quail who likes that anyway and you've got the opposing nations looking at them living on a promise you've got a whole nation as it were out on a limb You've got a whole people group steady trying to

recruit and then they die off and then by the time we get to the book of joshua there's a generation that does not know the lord so the book of hebrews let's pretend like we're in school it's situated prophet eric it looks so beautiful today in four different categories number one jesus is more superior than the angels and the torah He is not a messenger if you reduce him to being like abram isaac or one of the old testament fathers you take the power out of who he is and what he meant in his arrival

so the first segment of the book of hebrews is elevating jesus uh superior against the angels and the torah say teach me the second one is a bit more difficult dr treadwell because now the writer starts to elevate him against Moses and the promised land he's saying that you've been believing all your life and throughout your generations for the promised land and you've been following the words of moses but you continually reduce the messiah in lieu of what moses said you continue to bring him down and make him equal and bring him on the level

playing field of the stuff that moses says so the second segment of the book Elevates jesus christ against moses and the promised land the third one is wherever get tricky because then if to add insult to injury now they're elevating jesus against the priesthood against melchizedek they're like all the pigeons can't get you in here all the goats can get you in here the lambs the boars the wheat the grain to barley you can offer all of That and if not done in and by faith you can't be a part of this kingdom if we

look at this contemporarily i wonder how many of us that call ourselves christians are offering things in natural effort without faith and subconsciously living out the consequence of the law because we refuse to elevate the superiority of jesus Imagine listen to me sugar imagine being the point of christianity and consistently being the afterthought a sign and i wonder jesus i say this bravely boldly i i think marcus they'll disagree i feel like jesus is done being the afterthought of christianity i i i think he's tired of being the oh by the way he's tired of

being the parenthetic you know The gospel is get right or get left stop sinning to make your way into hell even the righteous will scarcely make it in by the way somebody came down through 42 generations to do what you could not do in your own power of his own free will and volition and so the reason behind the bondage of the nations is not just religious tradition it's the Ambiguity of the christ and his kingdom if if i submit to you the kingdom you'd probably get saved before i invite you to join my church

this brings us into a very necessary conversation pay attention i hate to teach you this morning it could mean that the kingdom is much larger than the local church [Applause] and when you talk about the resurrection You're talking about the establishment of the local church and the planting of the local church as an expression of the kingdom so then if we understand one without the other we keep cracking the egg and dishonoring the chicken what do we really know about the kingdom so so then after he deals with this issue of the priests and melchizedek

he deals with sacrifices and covenants what that means is that your Offerings your yieldings your covenants may i devastate you allow me to please um we use the phrase old and new testament and old and new covenant interchangeably and we should not you see the old testament contains the old covenant but the old covenant is also in what you refer to as the new testament you know they say who are the new testament prophets they say john the Baptist it's a lie they say anna was a new testament prophet it's a lie the new testament

was not born into the final supper [Applause] nothing new can begin until something ends and just because a new testament or a new chronicle began does not mean that the obsolete nature of the old covenant was finite or finished So then when did the old covenant finish at the last supper jesus said of himself a new covenant i make with you that means that everything before that moment happened under the veil of the old covenant it all happened under the old covenant that means we're still even struggling to understand what the new covenant is there

are people reading the new testament And have not been engrafted in the new covenant they think that matthew 1 is the beginning of the new covenant but matthew 1 is the beginning of the new testament the new covenant does not begin into a few days before the death of jesus that changes everything because it means that perhaps we're still struggling to live based upon the activity of golgotha The hill we've not embraced the resurrection because we think the testament of the covenant is the same so there are two primary messages in the book of hebrews

i know i'm boring you the first one if you are a persecuted christian sorry jasmine if you are in a global pandemic if there is hunger imprisonment death sickness Debt disease there's only one cure lord today i i i don't care if you go with johnson and johnson or pfizer i don't care if you got medical marijuana or cognac whatever your vice is there's only one solution sorry the message of hebrews is not real complicated you see we avoid the books of the bible that require logistic effort And that require intelligent investigation but my bible

tells me that there's still one solution in other words the writer of hebrews says i tried to tell you in matthew about me i tried to tell you in march tried to tell you in luke tried to tell you and john you didn't get it through romans you didn't get it through the galatians you didn't get it through anywhere else Let me try to unlock the fact that jesus is superior what that means that when it comes to the human race watch me the human condition the human hell the human sickness jesus is the answer

now i realize that y'all have heard that so much that you did james cleveland did away and put it away in the foul but i'm here to tell you the only way To first century power in 21st century problems is to go back to the fact that jesus is still the answer what are we going to do about the pandemic jesus what are we going to do about cancer jesus what are we going to do about homelessness jesus what are we going to do about divorce jesus what are we going to do about church growth

jesus what are we going to do About church splits jesus what are you going to do about the millennials jesus what are they going to do about alcoholism jesus what are we going to do about fornication jesus what are we going to do about pornography jesus what are you going to do about science jesus what are you going to do about the ozone layer jesus what are you going to do about oxygen jesus what are you gonna do about Gang violence jesus what are you gonna do about political upheaval jesus what are we gonna do

about bankruptcy jesus and we i am a christologist i i have dedicated my life to studying jesus looking to find him elevating him elevating him lifting him so then the book of hebrews has that intent lift him could it be that this was Necessary to write because in trying to live for him people thought they could live for him without lifting him and you cannot live for him before you've lifted him hebrews lifts him above what he did forgive me if i get a little woozy up here because i love talking about the man i

think i'm one of the last dying breeds Of people that can't talk about them too long without getting excited i i'm from a fabric of believer that still believes in the power of the name jesus that goes beyond butterflies i'm one of those that you know if you say him and you talk about him like he's a life coach it just hits me in a different space when you talk about the name jesus the life jesus the way jesus it helps me i wish more christians believed In jesus so hebrews elevates this so much so

say preach i'm almost done baby if you're watching this the theme of the book this is free seminary hebrews 1 brian says something that is offensive to people inundated in all covenant culture old covenant reality i like my bulls i like my pigeons and my goats they become A resume for my earned righteousness so i love being braggadocious and inflammatory about what i do to make god love me more or how long i fast to get a heavier anointing i miss this apostle monique in greek in hebrew i missed it where the anointing had different

weights charismatics have a way of abusing phrases and understandings of spiritual Matter and they know not the things of god and one of the apostolic prerogatives is to make sure nobody can boast every new testament apostle wrote or you don't like this wrote preached and demonstrated to rob the people of the right to boast because if one segment has a right to boast then another segment can be marginalized and extracted from the gospel But if none of us can boast your word is life to me if none of us can boast we can all come

in and so this is why the apostle paul a pattern apostle says to us the only thing i boast in is my weakness i love the fact that i can't boast the lord have mercy and so a boasting braggadocious gospel is a false one if i by what i wear and what i do and by how i was baptized and by what Day i worship in elevates me above you this is counter christ it's opposite of jesus there's a lot of people celebrating this man today who don't know him the easy messages that are going

on today he got up so you can when are we going to get the mystery and when are we going to engage the meat because it's the meat that matures you Part of what we need to realize is bragging is offensive to the gospel whether it's your time in prayer your time in fasting how many years you've been saved and around that that evil of seniority i'm getting to my point that evil of seniority they came to jesus and the gospel's the real and they're like who's going to get in First and jesus said actually

it'll be those of you that are last he debunked seniority because he was coming after people's right to brag do you know a braggadocio is christian an entitled christian a believer that feels like god and everybody else owes them because of how long they've been in quote unquote the game but the gospel is not a game it is the one anchor that all of american culture Is hinged upon in the book of hebrews highlights that is that good now can i give you something else to help you think are you ready to shout yet hebrews

1 says something that makes me want to flip cartwheels with a pair of swim trunks on in the middle of michigan avenue in the past this is the theme dr kenny of the whole book in the past in the past god Spoke to us in sundry times by a lot of different means jesus held me through this but now this is what the writer says he has spoken to us not through not by but in his son the writer opens up and says there was a lot of communication methods and mechanisms and technologies that the

men of god would write with to help us understand him but jesus was all he had to say He basically says god talks and and is talking but if you want to know what he's saying look at jesus look at him that is what god has to say he is the statement of god to the human race he is the statement of god the finishing move of god to the world this is exactly why until we're like him until we can live like him and love like him and be like him Our celebration of the

resurrection is in vain because we like christianity we still don't like the christ the author communicates this to show that god didn't need a lot more room to say much more than jesus now if we're going to use this as our temple in our paradigm we've got to look at his kingdom and what a kingdom is Is the dominion the territory of the arena of a king a king hebrews is a book that reveals the realities of the kingdom what i'm expressing to you is that kingdom realities are different from church realities kingdom realities have

absolutely nothing to do with your choice of worship on a sunday your denomination Your race your socioeconomic class it has nothing to do with that because it's been true since the days of dr king sunday morning is the most segregated day of the week and we can say all we want that you know it's just all people all it's not the truth and it's not the truth because we don't understand the kingdom there are millions of agendas millions of priorities millions of tasks that christian people Want to achieve i don't know if all of them

point to the kingdom of god their personal ambitions say yeah personal goals and achieving tasks and accomplishment but none of them really point to the revealing of jesus christ and so i want to go into this a bit deeper to help you understand why this is number one i'm going to give you some Shadows and types okay this is boring reveal when you go home the writer of hebrew says he is the radiance the radiance of god he uses the sun as imagery because that's what persecuted jewish christians would understand he's basically saying jesus is

sun rays to the sun you can't see one without the other if the sun is up we are notified by the Rays and so jesus is the radiance of the godhead i love this phrase bodily they call him number two the expressed image of god he uses that word image to reiterate the nature of jesus uh as the father and how it exists in that way so now we go into some real harsh realities that bring us to the richness of this text which cannot be perused It cannot be read fast or you miss the

whole point of the ministry of the gospel theologically journey from sinai to zion in order to do so you've got to understand what hebrews 12 states to us it states to us that we not only received and some folk can receive this forgiveness of sin let me ask you with a theoretic question to meditate on Do you think forgiving people from sin was hard for god i know that sounds easy but i want you to really let that sink in because the way we present the gospel and the way we present christianity is that god

struggles so hard to get people forgiven now he makes you do it you got to forgive your enemies when it come to him it takes him a while and then you see stuff like he's slow to Anger full of mercy this is in the old covenant he says stuff like to a thousand generations makes you rethink what you really believe about forgiveness iniquity what the resurrection allow this is important because to understand why my message is my message you've got to understand you probably don't really know what the kingdom is First of all it's backwards

if you compare what you know about the kingdom to any other naturalized comparison of kingdoms and the way they work you're thinking about a monarch you're thinking about somebody who's at the top somebody who you obey or you die somebody who has soldiers and armies and they rule and they reign ours is backwards which is why it's hard to live in it let me give an example In teaching about the kingdom jesus says whoever wants to be great you got to be a servant lift your hand say backwards he says stuff like if if you

want to rule with me and you want to reign with me you can get your degree mandela you can you can go and study i'd much rather you be like a child though he tells grown-ups get low act like a Child you want authority act like an infant say backwards he says crazy stuff where is the reward this is the message of jesus if you pray for those that love you and where is the reward if you can only coexist with those that have good to say then he got the unmitigated god to tell me

whoa unto you if everybody likes you I'm just telling you what he said if if men speak good about you something's wrong with you lift your hand say backwards he says weird stuff like i know your pastor has 20 members and 72 armor bearers i realize that celebrity and fame and acclaim is exactly what they aspire to they call it favor but but it but it's greed and the opportunity to be seen But in this kingdom he says the son of man came not to be served but to serve lift your hand and say backwards

i think our fundamental problem is we're looking at the heavenly kingdom like it's a natural one so we want to smuggle our way to the top and grind our way to visibility and and and hustle our way to be seen of men Meanwhile we have questions about where the supernatural is meanwhile we have questions about why we can cast out devils meanwhile we've not resurrected the dead and i ain't seen a limb grow back in 10 years we have a fundamental crisis which is churchianity versus the unshakable kingdom the unshakable kingdom the unshakable kingdom Now

this may offend you and this is not your peter cottontail message but the church can be shaken she won't ever be destroyed jesus promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against her but she sure can be shaken up but the kingdom cannot be shaken if i were you i'd spend less time trying to be popular in the church i spent more time trying to be rooted in the kingdom of god Because from that time the kingdom of god suffered violent lordhammer and the violence take it back forth it is our fundamental it is

our hey it is our fundamental ignorance of the kingdom in this kingdom say this kingdom we are exalted by going low in the other kingdom you get exalted by stepping over people but the way it works in this kingdom is the lower you get the higher you go Lift your hands and say stay low stay low they won't help me say sure they get low get low that's the way to greatness in this kingdom it's not about marketing it's not about a program or an event it's about how low can you go now the reason

this don't feel good to you is because you don't like challenges to get low you want to be Seen and lifted and elevated but in order to find your residence in the unshakable kingdom you got to be okay with getting low scream yeah here's the second i'm sorry the second thing you become filled by being empty in in in that kingdom the democratic kingdom and the black kingdom and the white kingdom and the republican kingdom you get fueled by eating you get filled By consumption you get healed by gathering but in the opposite kingdom the

upside down kingdom the more empty you are the more full you are now i know you don't like how that sounds because we did the wrong thing with our emptiness the last season when we got empty we went to whatever felt like it could satisfy but we were Not like those that said bread of heaven feel me right now jesus said pray give us this day our daily bread who is jesus he's the bread of life so in this kingdom you get filled by being empty by emptying yourself out now that's not just natural food

that has to do with biblical allegory concerning agenda what that means is that if something is more important to you than what god wants you are not in the kingdom of god And whatever kingdom you are citizen of can be shaken your career can be shaken if you don't believe me your marriage can be shaken your friendships can be shaken your local church can be shaken everything can be shaken but the kingdom of god and so finding yourself in that reality is important say yeah in this kingdom abundance is not about what you accumulate but

Rather what you give away you are abundant based upon what you can let go if you show me somebody that fears offerings fears tithing fear sacrifice fear is letting go you're not showing me somebody that's in rebellion you're showing me somebody that's in idolatry they have a ref a reverence for stuff they have to hold it say yeah but again The culture of the kingdom is very opposite you accumulate by what you're willing to lose if you want to follow me and be my disciple you've got to lay it down the way we americanize this

gospel is we teach if you want to follow me and be my disciple make as many connections and networking as you can but a well-connected life that's not laid down is death waiting to happen You can be as connected as you want it's a snare on schedule if your life is not laid down you will be led by whatever you think you need the most the kingdom of god here is a weird thing and i reiterate this because i want to give this to you as we crack open to the richness of this i don't

know any president any monarch any king any poet any faith leader whether it's Gandhi uh buddha with his tale who taught to love your enemies you want to talk about the resurrection you want to talk about rolling the stone away have we really coped with the fact that jesus said do good to them that despitefully use you i know that's the underbelly of christianity that we don't like talking about It means that when someone has wronged you you become an intercessor for them irrespective of their ability to acknowledge their wrong toward you you are not

in this kingdom if you've not resolved that you have to be an intercessor for your enemy i know you don't like that so many of you gonna stop telling people you saved you won't start saying you're spiritual because this is a lot to live up to when you have to realize that when people Hurt you it's a sign that they need your prayer that that you have to deflect the infracture on your soul to be a part of this unshakable kingdom this makes sense to you final thing that we have about this as we go

into sign our design is the kingdom of god is not meat or drink this is not talking about chipotle this is not talking about taco bell nasty they say this ain't talking about A fish witch or a mcrib sandwich which is not a rib at all it doesn't even have a bone it doesn't and they've been trying to act like for years that this is a rib sandwich they put a pickle on there and they think that we're deceived i'm tired of it the kingdom of god is not meat or drink ask me why because

it's righteousness joy and peace in the holy ghost Righteousness joy peace in the holy ghost i didn't just give you steps i just gave you a journey into the kingdom of god prophet jasmine i say this to you bravely apostolically i don't think we see what the kingdom does because we're still struggling with the first steps righteousness if you don't here's how it works If i don't understand righteousness i will never have joy if i don't have joy there is no such thing as peace if i don't have peace i can't appreciate and value the

ministry of the holy ghost in our presentation of christianity we try to start with the holy ghost let's go down in water jesus speak in tongues And that's how you're going to find peace then after you've got peace you've got joy and then you become righteous but in the unshakable kingdom the door you enter into is righteousness and i know you don't like this but righteousness is not about what i did or what i do righteousness is about what was done for me and then after i'm righteousness i can Enter into an unbelievable joy a

crazy joy a joy that has no reason a joy that has no fact a joy that has no attachment and when i got joy i got peace everything is right where it needs to be i need stuff but i got what i need i want stuff but i got what i need i see stuff but i got what i need the pieces are in place and when i've got peace i can submit to Hey yield to bow to follow partner with understand obey the holy ghost we have the whole thing backwards which is why we're
