There's lots of ooing and aawing all over the internet about whether Spotify editorial placements are good and what not, but today we're going to skip that and I'm going to show you some of my actual Spotify pictures that did get editorial placements and you'll even be able to steal them. Hey there, I'm Nick from 11 out of 10. I'm an independent musician with a business science degree and five years of marketing music for myself and other artists.
On this channel, I show you things that I've done in the hopes that you can steal them and apply them for yourself or maybe even do them better. And as I said, today we're going to do Spotify pitches. The structure of this video is fairly simple.
I'm going to break down three of my best Spotify pictures for my solo project and my band. And then right at the end, I'm going to show you my five-step formula for writing Spotify pictures. The formula I actually use myself.
And you'll even be able to download this. So, make sure you stick around for the end of the video. So, let's get into three of my best pitches that I've ever done.
The first one is for a song from my solo project. It's called Summers are Forever Now, and it landed on the following placements. Fresh finds folk new music Friday South Africa.
The pitch is fairly straightforward. It goes, "If summer's softest moments could be captured, it's in this song written in celebration of my mother's remarage. The chorus echoes with hope towards the future.
Every hour from here on out, summer is our forever now. Playing it at So far sounds Amsterdam and open mics, it's received such warmth in its response. Back home, I'm the frontman of the acclaimed indie act of dogs.
Self-produced, mixed by cloud inc, and mastered by PH FAT. Promo will be a music video, meta ads, submit hub, and social posts. Cute.
So, pretty straightforward. That was the biggest international about the fresh pines folk apart from this one. Not my first ever one though.
The second pitch I'm going to show you is from one of my band songs. It's called My Lovers on the Run. The band is Year of Dogs.
The pitch got featured on Indie Halloween new music Friday South Africa SA rock indie songs from 2024 you may have missed. So a few placements here. It went Love is her weapon and you're in danger.
My lover is on the run is an energetic indie rock return for Year of Dogs. The Bad Treads harder territory than usual with a song of a lover gone missing mixed by Josh Barry, Honeymoon, and Master by Rufus Funbard, Hidden Gem Studios. The song is suitable for road trip type indie rock, psychedelic, and indie pop playlists.
Promo for the song includes meta ads, Submit Hub, Groover, and social media. Thanks for the support. Yes.
Yes. This one got quite a lot. I think probably the most editorials that any of my pictures I've done for my own or band have gotten.
This indie Halloween was crazy. I think we got added a few or the song came out like right before Halloween and at one point it was doing like six or seven 8,000 streams a day. It was insane.
And then got some nice like local South African playlists too as you can see. And then the last one is where I got my most recent editorial placements for another solo project song. And the song I did with Linda, the song is called May I Please Rest My Head Upon Your Shoulder.
And the pitch goes as follows. May I Please Rest My Head Upon Your Shoulder. It's both the opening line and title of the collab between flourishing artists Nick Fon essay and Linda Enl.
Its heartfelt lyrics, buzzing harmonies, and soft nature make it feel like a caring partner at the end of a long week. Self-produced by Nick and mixed by Timber Bosch, Year of Dogs, makes it perfect for a playlist like Chilled Vibes. promo for it will include Groover, Submit Hub, Meta Ads, and a release show in SA South Africa.
So, this one got put onto Indie Brand now Brand Now, Indie Go and New Music Friday South Africa. This may be the biggest placement that I've gotten on any project and we're on there for a decent amount of time. So, it really helped boost the monthly listenership of both mine and Linda's profile.
So, pretty awesome. Now, you've seen all three of them. So, as I promised, I'm going to show you my actual formula for writing them.
Maybe you can already see a kind of formula having gone through all three of these and steal them. You can kind of copy them, but now I'm going to show you the actual formula which you will be able to steal. So, let's look at that.
So, here is my five-step formula and I'm going to use the song May I Please Rest My Head Upon Your Shoulder as the example. So, you can see I'm actually using this formula and not just showing you some random stuff I found on the internet. So, in the opening line, I want some sort of hook or interest capturing sentence.
So, maybe use a lyric or express your creative writing to describe the song. As you can see, I've color matched it. It's red.
May I please rest my head upon your shoulder is both the opening line and the title of the collab between flourishing artists Nick Fon essay and Linda NL. So, you can see I've used a lyric as I said and may I please rest my head upon your shoulder. It's kind of like wait what?
It's a bit of a unique title and even when I've played the song live, people have been like, "Oh, it's a cool title. " So, there's something in that already. So, I thought I can just use the title and it is in the lyrics too.
Secondly, it's to describe the mood, genre, feeling or even the instruments in a creative way. So, I say it's heartfelt lyrics, buzzing harmonies, and soft nature make it feel like a caring partner at the end of a long week. So, I've used my creativity to to try and describe how the song feels and what the elements of the song are.
I'm not just saying there are harmonies and I've played guitar like sure I'm sure most songs have harmonies and you could easily just describe the instruments, but to like really stand out to the editors, try and give a bit more. Then in blue, step three is to name drop. So if you've worked with some renowned producers, artists, engineers, or in a unique studio, try to mention names.
So self-produced by myself, name dropping myself and mixed by Timber Bosch, Year of Dogs. Okay, this is the band. Yeah, I suppose in South Africa there was a few people know us.
I suppose some editors, Spotify editors knew us, so I thought putting that in. And Timber, who's also editing this video, mixed the song. Threw that in there.
I've definitely dropped some bigger names for some other songs. Maybe these are the smallest names I've dropped, but it's done the best. So, take with that what you will.
Step four is optimal playlist. So, name a specific playlist or playlist mood which your song would fit into. I say makes it perfect for a playlist like Chilled Vibes.
I know there's a Spotify editorial called Chilled Vibes and this song would definitely fit Chilled Vibes. Didn't get on Chilled Vibes, but it still got on some pretty good playlists. So, do the same.
Finally, promo detail exactly how you are going to promote the song. So when you are in your Spotify for artists, Spotify does actually ask how are you going to promote the song. So better do what they ask, right?
So I said promo for it will include Groover, Submitub, Meta Ads, and a release show in SA South Africa, which I did do all of those things. So don't lie about how you're promoting the song, but just show everything you're going to do. You can even say posting on social media.
I've written that before or going to an open mic, anything just sort of promo so they can see you're actually trying to promote the song yourself. That is my five-step formula broken down. You can look back at these three different pitches or the other two and see how it's been applied and steal it for yourself.
