From the Watergate to the false mass destruction arms stocks justifying a military operation in Iraq secrete operations exist. In front of such examples we tell ourselves that we should doubt. And yes it is good to doubt, but to what extent?

let’s say that this doubt leads us to a group of people, hidden and influent, seeking to dominate the world. Say hello to the Illuminatis, the freemasons or the disciples of the protocol of the elders of Zion. Here it is, we are in the middle of a conspiracy.

We know the secret! we understood who manipulates this world. It’s fantastic and rewarding for our ego.

Sorry, but the reality is more complex. The illuminatis of Bavaria did exist. From 1776 to 1785, to which point this organisation was dissolved by the Bavarian government.

Why? because they were suspected of importing the idea of the “Lumières” philosophes in Germany. Liberty and democracy, what a blasphemy.

100 years later, between 1892 and 1895 the freemasons are the target of all suspicions Léo Taxil publishes numerous pamphlets on them. He describes satanic rituals and the freemasons aim of world domination all of that with witnesses to support his arguments. Frightening, right?

Except it’s a hoax. Léo Taxil says so himself on the 18th of April 1897 in front of a stunned audience. If he pretended to be a catholic, denouncing these dangerous free thinkers, it was to mock the Church and its stubbornness against free thinkers, which he is part of.

The text would disclose the existence of a worldwide plot led by the Jewish leaders. Yet, it was false, those texts were written by Matthieu Golovinski and backed by the political police of Tsar Nicolas II to legitimate its policies by scapegoating this fanciful plot. But historical facts don’t matter, in the conspiracy theories there is no doubt, only its illusion.

Because even contradictions are the proof that the conspiracy exist! The world leaders are seeking to hide the truth, of course! Here is how all critical mind disappears.

Imagine, you are convinced that your neighbour is part of a conspiracy, so you ask him the question: “are you part of the plot? ” if he answers “yes” the proof is there. If he answers “no” the proof remains since the rule of the member of a conspiracy is not to talk about it.

The 16/07/2014, 5 humanitarian workers as well as 3 journalist were killed in the south of Guinea. They tried to fight this rumour in order to give medical help to the ill populations. Nowadays, conspiracy videos are an amazing recruitment tool for sects and extremist groups, like Daesh.

By breaking all critical mind, they destroy all confidence in society, cutting all social bonds from the individual. Our algorithms such as the one used by Facebook or Google finish the job. By proposing content supposedly in agreement with the user’s point of view the conspiracy theories content on internet is self confirming.

Welcome in the quicksand. We are lucky to live in a democracy, we are free to doubt everything. Yet one thing is certain, conspiracy theories, under the false excuse of revealing the truth, destroy the critical mind main ingredient of democracy.

Because democracy is doubtful of everything, except itself.
