It's Time For an EV Upgrade: Here's What It's Like Living with the New Chevy Silverado EV RST!

today it is time for an upgrade that's right everybody so Mary's been daily driving our long-term $9 a month leaf for the past few weeks Mary how you liking it you know I nicknamed her Polly cuz she's tiny like a Polly Pocket um she's not a great commuter car she's got really really limited range and I drive 80 m a day so that's not ideal so the leaf here is 160 m of range maximum so we decided to upgrade Mary to the big dog this is the new Chevy Silverado EV rst and not only does

it have something like three times the range it's also something like four times the price this is one expensive big boy yeah I would I wouldn't be able to afford this vehicle so it's super exciting that I get to drive it what do you think of the looks of the new Silverado EV Mary yeah dude it's Sleek it's big it's bulky it's powerful everything the leaf is not so I'm I'm just psyched look at the size of those wheels are those 24s I think they're 24 in yeah when I was a kid way back in

the early 2000s I remember that the rers the rap music artists would rap about 20in wheels and now we got 24 putting those rappers to shame but let's show them the reason we're sticking Mary in this monster of a truck it's for this little number right here check that out Mary what's that range predictive 450 miles Tommy so the goal for Mary this week because she doesn't have charging at home and because she obviously you know cares a lot about range for her commute is to see if she can do the next few days with

450 mil yeah I'm not feeling too anxious about it I think I think this truck will get it done are you going to be able to park this thing anywhere this thing is huge oh yeah yeah yeah yeah I'm a truck expert which is a lie of course but I haven't driven a few trucks in my life just a few just a few yeah Mary I'm giving you the keys go go go make some [Applause] [Music] magic perfect amazing let's go okay so we have this truck for a limited amount of time a little bit

um normally my regular commute weekly would be around 400 miles wow in 5 days that's a lot so if we had it for the full time or if I was here for the full time that would be an easy peasy I'd just drive it every day right since we don't we're going to we're going to stretch your legs and go somewhere else so what are we doing let's do the Denver 100 Denver 100 so it's the 470 Loop all the way around 100 it is um not 100 miles as one might think it being called

Denver 100 it is 111 miles but it is at least a really good stretch of road that will give us some good readings yeah it'll be able to kind of give us a gauge on our efficiency Jen is here because I didn't want to do it alone and that's all moral support guys moral support also I love Jen so there's that so we want to reset our trip so we can get a more accurate reading for efficiency right mhm we're going to go to vehicle status and we're going to go to our trips and we

want to reset our for trips we're going to reset trip two now we starting with zero and we're starting with 413 Mi of battery uh of range and of range and theoretically it should be at 313 no 310 311 when we get back theoretically theoretically but you know given given the cold given the wind given how fast we're driving that is going to change drastically there's a lot of variables that will depend on how much range is actually used but I'll be curious to see what that ends up at too I just hope that there's

enough for me to drive home this is the truck I'm driving home in so how many miles up to your house well 40 40 girl you're good we'll be fine uh Pop Quiz yeah what does rst stand for oh that's a great question I goog this yesterday real sexy truck that's what I thought it was I thought it was really sexy truck it's not red sunken Turtles ooh sounds like a like a metal band yeah I really just real stupid truck round spherical robust Rob sturdy ooh Titans Transformers I will tell you the real answer

eventually I don't know Rally Sport truck ah okay that sounds better I suppose I would have gone with red sunken Turtles [Music] but you look so uneasy about this I just like highway driving you do not mess around with highway driving okay so we turn Super cruise on um that green light is on the steering wheel it's a little bit too far to the left side of the lane than I would prefer it to be um like it's pretty pretty close to the people on my left side there's a semi up here so it it'll

probably do um an automatic Lane change in a second which is terrifying I'm feeling so nervous like I want to switch lanes right now let's see I would right now is okay now it's doing it look at this whoa okay so passing a semi is objectively one of the worst things that a person has to do on the highway it's aware that that guy's right there and he's pretty close to him oh my goodness all right but it didn't hit him which is great really great news I'm not driving the truck this is crazy how

are you feeling I feel okay I mean you are in control but it is driving for you if I'm telling the whole truth and nothing about the truth I feel super nervous like every time like we like hit a bump or something I feel like I need to grab the wheel but I mean it seems to be monitoring things pretty well and oh she switch Lanes it also obviously you can't see this on camera but whenever it's about to switch lanes the seat goes dink dink dink like it vibrates under on on whichever leg it's

how do you feel about that uh it makes me feel like I put my phone under my leg and forgot about it so that was a curious Choice how comfortable are you I I mean I feel like I'm living the life of luxury really uh how how has it been driving this I've literally driven it this morning but I felt really powerful and I think it's not hard to feel powerful when you're comparing it to a Nissan Leaf a few more miles of range a few more miles range okay a few more feet off the

ground yeah heated steering wheel so Choice got heated seats it does not have apple carplay no apple carplay no apple carplay um which the leaf does have so that's the one up the leaf has well what do you think of the interior in here roomy it's nice and roomy my only qualum and this is a stupid qualum but this thing doesn't have a click oh no I I get it you know and there's also no like handle to like open it it's just very lackluster yes yeah it just feels like something's missing I was listening

to Spotify this morning and the audio system was underwhelming I mean like great it's better than using a little speaker on your dashboard which is what I have to do putting your phone in the cup holder yeah well that's what I initially did but yeah they're just Bose speakers so not really just kind of runof-the-mill not really anything crazy or special but yeah I like the interior the screen's a little too far over for me huge pretty long so if you're curious what this massive 17.7 in screen has let's get a little closer look so

if you go to the home screen you've got vehicle status which will give you stuff like your energy usage your efficiency uh some information about the car itself about the truck self and then we can go over your drive modes you've got normal off-road and Tow hul and the cool thing is you can use super Crews while towing with this truck which is pretty nifty um we've also got things like you know your charging sections this is going to show you what status of charge you have setting different charge levels if it ever loads there

you go uh and you can also find different charge points uh so that you're not stranded which is never really a fun thing to do um we also have some different camera angles which is pretty nifty guys we even have this overhead section so you can see exactly what you're coming up front right in the front here we've got your side by side so you can see what you're coming close to if it's rocks or anything weird uh and then we've got just a regular old backup camera then this is cool this shows you a

point of view from the bed of the truck so you can see if anything's flying out if you're dogs are jumping out if your kids that you don't like that you put back there are jumping out it's just a nice angle to have what do you think how do you feel about the interior I like it I like that it's got this uh dual blue and red stitching it's pretty neat I didn't even notice that yeah I think that's pretty cute and I like the the red bars here in the vents and I do like

these vents like I like that they're like easily adjustable um a little bit of piano black which I'm glad that there's just a little bit cuz it just attracts so much dust you see every little thing on it but it's not like the whole dash is piano black so back seat looks roomy yeah I can imagine the leg room back there is lay down back there yeah no this is uh kind of crazy actually how much room is back here I mean like you can like run laps back here well wouldn't recommend it but you

could even the person who gets kind of stuck in the middle seat here is going to be pretty comfy I mean literally you just got like I'm fully extended back here but I feel like even if you were taller and your front seat was pushed back you would have ample leg room uh head room is perf more Bose speakers back here we got two Bose speakers on the doors this midgate can fold in and make that bed a lot longer pretty sick you also have some climate control back here so back seats are heated and

you have these guys to control from the back and cup holders one qualm from the back seat is there is no thing to cover the sun this open roof is you get what you get and you don't throw a fit or you get what you get and you throw a big fit because the sun is blinding you one or the other you're coal but yeah know pretty crazy back seat room how's visibility like seeing the road and everything really good really really good one thing that it doesn't have is that kind of wide angle mirror

which I really appreciate in these kind of yeah in these big trucks like this I really appreciate the wide angle and it does not have those but they're um power mirrors they're not very hard to figure out I do like that pretty much the only buttons that you have in here are for your climate control control all of these toggle switches which have like a really nice feel to [Music] it all right so that wraps up the Denver 100 Loop we went 111 mil as we promised we would our average efficiency was 1.7 m per

kilow hour that's oh yeah and took us about an hour and 50 minutes so I mean 1.7 is bad like it's true decent decent mile per kilowatt hour would be like four okay check this out guys fancy buttom vehicle off it's at 65% power now 65 so we started with around 93 93 but it was uh 413 Mi I believe yep and but we only went 111 Mi so theoretically this should have come out at 312 but we're at 289 which just goes to show how many variables there will be when you're driving just because

you drive 111 mil you're not going to have 111 mil used there's so many variables that are going to use up your range this just is a perfect example super Cruise helped I think because it prevented us from you know fluctuating our speed too much I think the wind didn't help us a lot today uh it was very windy so it was pushing the truck around a lot which means it's overcompensating a lot like I said I'm not an EV expert all I have is my experience with the leaf but like EES are not typically

most efficient on the highway no they're more they're more efficient when you are using that recycled energy the whole time yeah when you're breaking a lot you're using um you're using more recycled energy you do preserve your range and we were not breaking no we're not breaking for that whole Loop you know and it was an hour and 50 minutes of just cruising fun first day in this truck whoa she's alive apparently these headlights are like startlingly bright uh so I'm just going to like see if I can show you just how bright they look

uh we run a little time lapse or something thing and uh I'll show you kind of what we're working with in the headlight [Music] Department good morning we drove 166 mil yesterday and I still have 244 mil left of range features that I love in this truck heated steering wheel heated seats given how expensive it is it gets up to $98,000 like yeah it better have a damn heated steering wheel and some heated seats like duh things I don't like parking's really hard I might just be bad at parking but it's not easy to to

park in this thing even though it does have really good handling and it can maneuver pretty nicely it's still just so big and that's not unique to the Chevy Silverado e that's just trucks I also am disappointed with the lack of Apple carplay I love the range obviously I practiced with the one pedal driving a lot in the leaf cuz I wanted to get good at it and if you're in an EV you're going to have that as an option and this one has it and it does recycle your energy in your kilowatts so it's

good that I feel comfortable using that if we're talking I mean the whole premise of this is that I this is an upgrade from the leaf and that premise is not hard to prove obviously a truck that is almost $100,000 is going to be better than a Nissan Leaf that you literally lease for $9 a month in Colorado money talks but it is an impressive [Music] range so my co-workers took this truck out without my permission now we're only at 112 miles which is barely enough to get me home and back so we're going to

go experience public charging charging is the worst it's it's not great I don't even like getting gas for my car yeah and that takes what minutes yeah it takes like no time at all once again I brought Jen because we just like doing stuff with Jen we're off yeah this the charging isn't here it's over there this is a disaster oh every time I have to go to public charging and Boulder I want to gouge my eyes out correct every time thank you love you or you can go around and go left again here and

there should be some CCS Chargers over here okay so this is going to be an absolute nightmare trying to either pull in or back up into one of these spots Park here for a second I know they're around here somewhere I just don't know where I see them do you see one that is available that's nobody's going to like snipe away from us there is an open stall is it this one yeah that's the open stall I'm going to film Jen parking this bad boy cuz she's the expert so just keep in mind if it

were me it would be bad [Music] all right bar how you feeling uh you said the charging port is on driver's side just back here it's the size of North America slightly smaller one than I'm accustomed to it's a long hose it's heavy the truck is upset and says the first station that we tried told us that there was a problem with the cord we were using so now Jen is backing up into a different station this one right here we are going to see how this one works and hopefully it works just fine if

not I will scream in public okay Jen why don't you plug her in you seem to be having better luck than me today well nice we are plugged in ladies and gentlemen really good job this may take a minute oh okay okay okay so they are charging 56 cents per kilowatt hour a CCS hyper fast up to 350 KW uh let's pay by card I guess that's cool okay it's going to be ready by 520 today if we charge all the way to 100 we don't need 100% no I mean 50 is fine oh should

we get something to eat oh my God yes please we went and got some Panera and we were gone for about 26 minutes 62% we left left if you remember at 22% and we only had 100 some miles left so now there's 311 mil of range and 62% let's go see how much that cost $53 so that's crazy jeez there I'm going to get that receipt I'm not having a good time [Music] suffice it to say this is better than the leaf that wasn't a question when we began it was an upgrade it is an

upgrade the 450 Mi of range is just insane it'd be awesome for road trips cuz it's super comfortable the seats are just made to relax if it is a road trip you have that super Cruise which scared me driving as you saw but you know that could could be somebody's Jam I don't know price tags pretty insane $98,000 for this guy and price tag for charging is also pretty insane but it does have one of the hugest batteries for Ev trucks so kind of makes sense when you really get into it but I had a
