what's up guys welcome back to the smart student my name is Chelsea curn today we're going to talk about how you can use artificial intelligence in your academic writing specifically we're going to focus on chat GPT now the reason is because APA formatting has officially released a set of guidelines and rules for using programs like chat GPT in your writing as well as how to site and reference them correctly now before you get too excited this does not mean you have the green light to use gbt to write your entire paper it simply means that
it can be used to facilitate research and even create some text within reason now of course if your professor says anything that varies from this video such as don't use it at all do follow their instructions first okay so the first thing we need to talk about is how you're going to include the material in your paper as I just said you're not using chat GPT to write large sections of your paper however you're going to treat it like any other source where if you want to use material generated by chat jpt you need to
create a new Citation for those ideas that are not yours the difference is is that you're going to include the prompt that you used and the exact text that was generated this is very important because chat GPT is designed to give you a different response even if asking the same question twice to demonstrate this here's an example from the APA blog it reads when prompted with is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor the chat GPT generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized the notion that people can
be characterized as left brain or right brain is considered to be an overs simplication oversimplification and a popular myth now there's a couple things I want to point out here first notice how the insert is relatively small it's not a giant wall of text taking up most of our paper it really is just a short sentence to help Drive our Point home next note how it includes the prompt and the exact response word for word verbatim matter of fact it's structured like a direct quote because that's exactly what you're doing is including the direct material
that was used in chat GPT now before we jump into how to site and reference this I do want to talk quickly about to do if you if it is appropriate to include a longer response from chat GPT in this case what you would do is you would include the full text within the appendix of your paper or if you're including any supplemental material the example that APA has on their blog would read like this when given a follow-up prompt of what is a more accurate representation the chat GPT generated text indicated that different brain
regions work together to support various cognitive processes and the functional specialization of different regions can change in response to experience and environmental factors note how in the Intex citation it says C appendix a for the full transcript that is where you would include the full transcript if it was necessary for the research done on this paper I will note that most of you watching this video this is not relevant this becomes relevant when you're writing a long manuscript or perhaps a paper of for publication but now that we know how to include the text within
your paper let's talk about how to create that reference list entry in Intex citation so just like any other APA reference it's going to include four elements you have the author the date the title and the source then when it comes to the Intex citation this is a shortened version of the reference list entry which is going to only contain the author and the date the biggest difference when inciting AI software is that it doesn't fall under a retrievable source which is your traditional sources such as books Journal articles web pages nor does it fall
under a personal communication things like emails professor's lectures PowerPoint slides things like that it falls into its own category which APA is labeling an algorithm's output what that means in simple terms is that instead of looking for an author someone who wrote the transcript You're simply going to list the company that built the AI program so here is an actual template you can apply to any AI software as you can see we have the four elements for the author you're going to list the company for the date you only need the year of the model
for the title you want to include the name of the AI notice that it's italicized then you want to include the version in parentheses and finally in square brackets you want to include a descriptor this is simply a short description of the type of source you're citing because again this is a non-traditional source so in this case since this is a language model I would include large language model simple and then to close out the reference you want to include the source which in most cases it's going to be a live URL link underneath the
reference template you can see we have the template for our citations there is two of them because depending on how you're formatting it in your paper it can whether be a parenthetical citation or a narrative but let's go ahead and take a look at this example with all of the elements filled in here we go we have the company which in this case is open AI followed by a period to close out the author element the year of this model is 2023 enclos in parentheses again a period to close out the date element the title
we have chat GPT in italicized formatting and then in parenthesis es we have March 14th as the version as you can see in the square brackets we have the large language model as our short descriptor period to close out the title element and then the source element we have the live URL link to finish out the full reference you have the corresponding Intex citation as you can see that includes open AI comma 2023 for the author in date element this will link it back to the full reference list entry at the end of your paper
so this is a template you can use no matter what AI software you're citing provided it's been approved to be used in academic writing I will say if you're using an image generator there is a slight variation on how APA would like you to create the Intex citation in reference list entry if that's something you need help with be sure to check out the next video
