imagine setting sail into the unknown thinking you'll hit Asia and ending up in a place completely different we're diving into what happened immediately after Columbus set foot in the Americas it's a tale of Adventure misunderstandings and a Cascade of consequences that would reverberate through history columbus' voyages were a big deal not just for him but for the entire world his adventures set the stage for an era of exploration and colonization that changed everything let's explore the wild stories of his first landing and each of his subsequent voyages focusing on the impact they had on the
local populations and the strange tragic and exciting events that followed in 1492 Columbus set sail across the Atlantic supported by the Spanish Crown he was convinced he would find a new route to The Riches of Asia instead on October 12th 14 1992 he stumbled upon the Bahamas hey this was no ordinary hna Discovery though this was a start of a massive cultural Collision Columbus named The Island San Salvador though the native lucayan people probably had their own name for it not that Columbus was asking he and his men were looking for gold and spices but
found a land rich in possibilities and people Columbus described the lucayan people as kind and generous they wore little clothing and had no Advanced weapons which to Columbus me an easy conquest and a potential free labor force when they met he was basically putting them the work in his own head thinking of the possibilities they brought parrots cotton balls and Spears as gifts not realizing Columbus wasn't the kind of guest you wanted around for too long the Spaniards gave them red caps and glass beads kicking off what would become centuries of trade and exploitation in
a letter back to Spain Columbus was excited by how the natives could be used as servants he wrote many of the men I have seen have scars on their bodies and when I made signs to them to find out how this happened they indicated that people from other nearby Islands come to San Salvador to capture them they defend themselves the best they can I believe that people from the mainland come here to take them as slaves they ought to make good and skilled servants for they repeat very quickly whatever we say to them I think
they can very easily be made Christians for they seem to have no religion if it pleases our Lord I will take six of them to your highness when I depart in order that they may learn our language columb was found at The Outpost of La Navidad on December 25th 1492 when the Santa Maria his Flagship ran ground the sailors used the ship's remains to construct a settlement and it said that some 39 men remained behind while Columbus went back to Spain to inform the king of his Discovery though temporary this Expedition served as a way
in which Columbus could have something tangible to show Spain towards the financing of future voyages but he had never learned about how his crew related with the indigenous people before leing leaving so after Less Than 3 months in the new world Columbus sailed back to Spain he abandoned The Colony still hoping it would be a starting point for a Spanish Empire in America Columbus wanted to present his findings to the Spanish court and so he brought back those six indigenous people he talked about bring it back and a small amount of gold to show them
how rich these lands were his arrival in Spain was greeted with Pomp and Circumstance as he became an instant celebrity for having started what many believe would be a golden age for Spain in 1493 Columbus came back with a fleet of 17 ships and more than 1200 men this wasn't just a return visit it was a colonial invasion in full force Columbus had become a governor in addition to an Explorer whose mission was to establish permanent Spanish presence in the new world however when he came back to Hispanola he found lavidad destroyed the people he
left behind had managed to anger the locals something that would become too common as the years went by and European presence in the Americas grew probably out of anger or because of some fundamental disagreement with their neighbors they destroyed the settlement it was a bad start to what was supposed to be the start of a grand expansion in the Americas now despite the setback Columbus started another town known as La Isabella on the northern coast of Hispanola he saw it as a beginning point for his Grand project on colonization but this place was bedeviled by
poor planning diseases and inadequate Supply lies settlers suffer terrible conditions and Columbus's harsh rule did not make them respect him very much the tyo people were becoming more increasingly hostile due to their land being grabbed from them and their Nation being enslaved yeah I could see them being ticked off about that they were expected to be partners but these policies made them anything but Partners Columbus was under a lot of stress to deliver the wealth he had pledged to the Spanish Crown so he created a tribute system that required tyo subjects to produce gold which
was scarce the system required every tyo over the age of 14 to collect a certain amount of gold dust every 3 months and deliver it to the Spanish authorities those who met their quotas were given a copper token that they had to wear around their necks to prove that they were doing the work the punishments for failing to meet the gold quotas were brutal and inhumane the tyo who couldn't produce the required amount of gold had their hands cut off and were left there to bleed to death the Lust For Gold led to broken relationships
and rebellions Columbus's second voyage appeared to have been a catastrophe still he didn't give up on proving its value so he reached out farther than ever before and headed to Jamaica and the islands of Lesser Antilles this led them into an open conflict with the tyo people as tensions heightened within the colonies though they were greatly outnumbered their European Weaponry gave the Spaniards a strong upper hand over their opponents violence became a never ending cycle of Revenge and reprisals as the tyo refused to surrender their land as the tyo refused to surrender their land and
continued to defend their their ways of life Columbus was quickly losing a battle for hearts and Minds in the new world and not only that but things would soon get even worse in a fleet of six ships Columbus left Spain on May 30th 1498 Columbus then strategically split his journey three of his ships went directly to Hispanola carrying supplies for the struggling Colony while Columbus led the remaining three ships towards unknown territories in the South his re reing was that he could still find a route to Asia and in the process find yet more land
that he could exploit for more Precious Minerals to fill the coffers of the Spanish Crown after crossing the Atlantic yet again Columbus reached the island of Trinidad on July 31st 1498 from there he sailed along the northern coast of South America up to present day Venezuela it was at this point that Columbus noticed that there was a huge amount of fresh water coming from the oronoko river which made him think that he discovered an entirely new continent which he named terraferma he still thought he'd made it near the Asia Mainland but he was wrong again
the guy wasn't great at geography but hey he still had the balls to go places that were unmapped the situation in Hispanola took a turn for the worst while Columbus was exploring South America the Spaniards who came with dreams of wealth and prosperity were now living in squalor there were severe food and supply shortages things that had been promised never materialized and there was widespread disillusionment so King Ferdinand sent over a Spanish nobleman named named Francisco de badia to figure out what all the noise was about inspect what was happening there and hopefully bring order
back to Hispanola bobadilla found a chaotic settlement upon arrival everybody was complaining accusations were flung around and a lot of them towards Columbus and his mismanagement of the settlement badia took over he arrested Columbus when he got back from his Terra firmer adventure together with his brothers Diego and Bal Mayo they were charged with misgovernance and subjecting settlers as well as the indigenous people to brutality badia took away all of Columbus's property before shipping him back to Spain in Chains now there was disbelief and anger in Spain when they found out this happened but he
didn't wither away in some prison because King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella pardoned him but still the damage to his reputation was done although he was released from jail Columbus lost a ton of his power he was banned from going back to Hispanola as a governor and his dreams for a prosperous Spanish Empire in the new world were quickly tur into a nightmare of colonial expans ion in 1502 Columbus was able to organize a fourth Journey despite all these setbacks now this time he wanted to find a Western route to Asia he collected four ships
and set sail again one last push for Glory Columbus sailed along the coast of Central America and visited Honduras Nicaragua and Panama in Honduras he met the Maya he was impressed by their wealth and their nice jewelry and intricate textiles these things could make Spain even wealthier he probably thought but he didn't have the resources to fully exploit them and he pushed on he still had a passage to Asia to find but then a storm blew in and Columbus was stranded on the shores of Jamaica a the Island's Governor didn't like him and actively blocked
any efforts to help Columbus and his maroon Fleet they ended up stuck on the island for over a year in order to survive Columbus used a book on Celestial navigation written by a German astronomer named regimantas to predict a lunar eclipse the native arak people thought this was pretty cool and Godlike and so Columbus was able to Swindle them out of most of their resources and stay alive in 1504 relief finally arrived in the form of a rescue mission and Columbus was able to sail back to Spain his quest for a route to Asia still
unfulfilled by the time he made it back his health was failing and his reputation was shot all to be damned the man who had opened the door to the new world was now a relic of a bygone era Columbus died in 1506 still convinced that he had found a route to Asia Columbus's voyages open the floodgates for European exploration and colonization of the Americas setting in motion a series of events that would reshape the world his encounters with indigenous people were marked by conflict and exploitation setting a precedent for the colonization efforts that followed one
of the most significant outcomes of columbus' voyages was the Colombian Exchange a vast transfer of plants animals and cultures between the old and new worlds this exchange transformed diets and economies across continents but also introduced diseases that devastated native populations the introduction of crops like potatoes and Maze and tomatoes revolutionize agriculture in Europe while European livestock and Grains alter the Landscapes of the Americas Columbus's Legacy is a subject of ongoing debate I mean to some he's a daring explorer who connected continents and changed the course of history to others he's a symbol of imperialism and
the suffering inflicted upon indigenous people his voyages were marked by ambition and curiosity but also if we're keeping it real by violence and exploitation
