hello everyone welcome to our lecture on metaphysics if you remember from last time this was one of the three parts of a world view metaphysics which just means above physics aristotle wrote a word called physics where he tried to explain the physical universe and then he wrote another work called metaphysics which means above or transcend in physics so now he's going to explain the world or the reality beyond the physical world that word metaphysics or that study metaphysics can be broken down into two sub-studies the first sub-study is ontology say it after me ontology ontology
just means the study of being in your textbook really covers ontology with the concept of human nature and we're going to talk about human nature in week two a great deal so ontology study of being comes from human nature the second sub study is cosmology in russia you call an astronaut a cosmonaut and that term cosma means comes from this means world or universe comes from the greek and cosmology is the study of the universe so and that is covered in your book as ultimate reality and the nature of the universe an amazing way to
think about what metaphysics is is to take a box okay you got a box and put everything you believe exists in that box mount everest god the grand canyon your university your mom your dad everything into that box yourself and then that box is metaphysics that and it's also cosmology how you describe the items in the box is ontology so i can pull something out of the box of my cosmology let's say a human and how i describe that human is now ontology the study of being so everyone's conceptualizing that you got a box you
put everything you know that exists into that box that box is cosmology everything that exists is in that box the way you describe the items in the box is ontology the box as a whole is metaphysics until next time
