Steven Colbear found the 1989 Meet the Press archive and placed Trump's explanation of how he does business next to the 2024 fraud conviction. The appeals court paused restrictions on Trump running any New York company as well as the restrictions on his adult sons. Now Don Jr.
and Eric can still open their hot dog and cocaine cart. The pundits are saying the court handed Trump a lifeline. That makes sense.
By law, you have to throw someone a lifeline when they look that much like a waterlogged corpse. Why are you joining the Reform Party? Uh, I really believe the Republicans are just too crazy, right?
I'm seeing the Democrats as far too I mean, Bradley and Gore are so liberal, it's just too liberal for me. Four of your companies went bankrupt, Mr Trump. I have of the 71 companies I have, those four that I threw into a chapter and they were just four.
Not me personally. These were just four out of many, many companies caused by the Bill Bradley's of the world who created a ridiculous tax structure. Those four companies did very, very well.
I use the system as to my advantage and there's nothing wrong with that. I don't like the idea of privatizing so social security. I think it's certainly something that can be looked at.
Who knows better about hard times than me? I had a company. It was doing well.
Friends of mine went bankrupt. They went out of business. Never to be heard from again.
I went out and my company is now much bigger, much stronger, much more powerful than it ever was before. So, I mean, I understand this stuff. I understand good times and I understand bad times.
Today was supposed to be a special day. day that Donald Trump had to either fork over $464 million or Attorney General Leticia James was going to grab him by the property. I'm really rich.
There you go. There you go. That checks out.
And last week, his lawyers claimed that for their super rich client, securing the bond would be a practical impossibility. Aha. Cost you now.
He's not a real rich guy. He just plays one on TV. Would you be concerned that a conviction if you are convicted in that trial could cost you the election given what Todd said voters Well, it could also make me more popular.
The guiltier he is, the more the crowd loves him. Does he ever accept money to a foreign government to pay the bond or their fines or No, I don't I don't do that. I think you'd be allowed to possibly.
I don't know. We also got a glimpse inside the courtroom thanks to sketch artists, including this one of a grinning Trump at the defense table. He looks like a happy frog.
And I know that because when I Googled happy frog, I got this. Three of Donald Trump's not a war to end all wars. The military has done everything he's asked of them.
They're very good at their jobs, but there's a limit to air power. The straight of Hormuz remains blocked. Which brings us to tonight's edition of Hormuz News.
You can use nothing can get bruise. When will it end? No clues.
Oil prices have risen more than 40% since the start of the war. And in the US, gasoline prices have jumped more than 65 cents per gallon. The decency did not last long because Trump later told reporters that he may order more strikes on Car Island just for fun.
Well, sure. I mean, in the famous words of J. Robert Oenheimer, "Now I am become death.
" Wee. [laughter] On Friday, Defense Secretary Pete Hexath told us there's no problem with Iran blocking the Straight of Hormuz except except for one problem. The only thing prohibiting transit in the straits right now is Iran shooting at shipping.
It is open for transit should Iran not do that. [laughter] Yes. Yes.
as that is ironclad logic. Good news, Miss Nichols. Your husband's surgery went perfectly.
He should be ready to take home as soon as he's done at the crematorium. Trump turns all of our allies against us and now he's begging their help. It's like that classic children's book, The Boy Who Cried, you everybody then kicked a wolf.
[cheering] [cheering] The president was eager to claim that several countries have committed to helping secure the strait but declined to name any of them. So many so many countries are helping. Nambia, [laughter] Carala, East Pambula, both Hakuna and the Democratic Republic of Matata.
We have these countries. Japan gets 95% of it's from the Straits, the harmless straits. And it always bothered me that we're protecting and we don't need them.
We didn't need them before we started uh dig We must dig me west. [laughter] [laughter] Is it dig we must or brain be broke? But of course I don't know.
[cheering] I'd like to know, [applause] but we don't know. But of course, of course, everything Trump says has to be right. So get ready for his updated slogans.
Dig, we must build the walk and mor America Mindy again. I've spoken to a certain president who I like actually a past president, former president. He said, "I wish I did it.
I wish I did, but they didn't do it. I'm doing it. " Yeah.
Which president? Which president? Can't I can't tell you that.
I can't. No, I can't. I can't tell you.
The 2024 judge heard evidence Trump inflated Mara Lago's value from 75 million to 739 million, overstated his Trump Tower penthouse size by tripling the square footage, and did this across decades to secure loans based on manipulated numbers. In 1999, Donald Trump sat across from Tim Russer and defended his corporate bankruptcies, calling them legal strategic maneuvers that smart businessmen used to negotiate and walk away from bad deals. This was fraudulent, calling it smart business and self-promotion, manipulating financial statements to deceive banks and using the exact strategies he described in 1999, except the judge called them fraud, not smart business.
That interview was archived and forgotten for 25 years. Judge Arthur Angeran convicted Trump of fraud for inflating property values to secure loans. The match was exact.
Trump told Russ he used bankruptcy strategically to renegotiate debts and walk away. That he promoted properties aggressively to create value even when financials did not support it. and that this was negotiation, not fraud.
He was accurately describing his practices. And 25 years later, a judge called those exact practices fraud. Trump told Russ that walking away from deals was smart, that bankruptcy was a legal tool, and that promoting properties beyond their actual value was skill, not deception.
Trump defrauded banks by providing false financial statements, inflated asset values to obtain loans, and his overvaluation was not marketing. It was material misrepresentation to deceive lenders. One description came from Trump's mouth in 1999.
The other came from a judge reviewing financial records in 2024. Same behavior, different words. Quick, if you haven't subscribed, hit the button.

Back to the tape. Trump did not change his practices between 1999 and 2024. He described them to Russ as legal.
then continued doing them until the New York Attorney General proved in court that inflating Mara Lago's value by nearly 700 million, claiming his penthouse was three times its actual size. And providing these numbers to banks was fraud under New York law. The judge ruled that specific actions Trump took, actions he accurately described the mechanics of in 1999 met the legal definition of fraud because they involved knowingly providing false information to obtain financial benefit.
The 1999 interview is Trump explaining in his own words how he approaches business. And when you listen to him tell Russ he uses bankruptcy to walk away, promotes properties beyond what numbers support, and does not see this as problematic because it is legal. Trump was telling the truth in 1999 about what he does.
He just did not realize accurately describing fraud does not make it legal. It makes it documented. Colbear played the 1999 tape next to the 2024 verdict and let the audience hear Trump describe walking away from deals in 1999, then read the court finding he defrauded lenders and walked away from accountability in 2024.
It makes the tape a 25-year-old confession. Subscribe to the narrative brief. We find the tape from 25 years ago that explains today.
The patterns repeat.
