today i'm gonna show you how you can make money with github and i will tell you exactly what you need to do and why people would want to sponsor you let's get into this [Music] hi everybody welcome back to code dave today i want to walk you through how you can make money and get paid while working on open source projects on github and there's a couple of ways to do so but before we see them let me ask you something are you providing value to your users or developers using your projects it is very
important to understand this because it's not github paying you directly for the work you do is the other users developers and possibly companies if you create or manage a project that is useful for the community or perhaps you have a library and people use that because it's valuable then they may decide to send you some money to sponsor you for your work and why would they do that well sometimes the reason is that they really love what you're doing and they want to show you appreciation and support but often instead the reason is that they
really depend on your project and so they want to make sure your code library or whatever else you're doing keeps getting updated and supported throughout time and of course this is even more important for companies before december 2020 only single developers and user could sponsor other people's work but now also companies can do that there are so many companies that use open source libraries and components and now through donations and sponsorship they can support the projects they use and need and again make sure they are updated and supported thorough time all right now that we
understand the mechanics behind that let's see how we can make this happen how we can enable users and companies to send us money and there are mainly two ways to do so the first one is using third-party providers and the second one is using github directly but before we move to that hit the like button below if you're enjoying this video or you find it insightful so more users can benefit from it and also it would mean a lot to me right let's jump into github and make this happen alright as i mentioned before there
are two ways to get money with github using third-party providers and using github directly let's see first how to do it when using third-party providers let's say i have this project over here that i want to somehow monetize what i need to do is go into the settings scroll down to the features section and here we have this sponsorship so first thing we have to do is to enable the sponsorships and then we can set up the sponsor button so it's really easy what this does is creating this funding yaml file inside a dot github
directory in which you can set all the third-party providers you may want to use now let's skip github for a second but you can see that we have all the usual funding mechanism for community users we have patreon we have open collective and many others now let's say for example we want to add our pattern user in my case i will just remove that and insert code dave now i can commit this and now that it's done if i go back to the main page you can see that now we have this sponsor this project
and we have the patron link with my username already filled in if a user now wants to sponsor me he can just click on the link and it's automatically brought to my patreon page let's go back to github so this is very very easy to enable and as you can see it also enabled the sponsor button on top of your repo if i click on that i can again select how i want to sponsor this user repo which of course is my user now another reason why this is easier is that it doesn't require you
to apply for the github sponsorship program if we go back to our funding file in fact if you remember before i said we will take a look at the github part later you may be tempted to just replace this with your username everything seemed to work but what happened when we click on sponsor as you can see we have an error and this says the users that we've added to the funding are not enrolled in the github sponsor program this is why i've started with the external providers because those ones don't require you to be
part of the github sponsorship program what to do if we want to be part of the sponsorship program as you can see here we do have this apply to sponsor button we can click on and this takes us to the main github page for it we can use the get sponsor button over here and in here we can join the waitlist there is a wait list because every single application is reviewed manually to make sure users and repos comply to the policies get upset to join the waitlist you only need to select the country or
region where your bank account is and there are 36 regions supported in my case is hong kong and also the country or region of residence which again for me is hong kong and then you just need to click on the join waitlist button over here for your application to be sent after you click the join waitlist someone from github will review your application will review your information and will open up for you the second phase of the application now i cannot show you directly the second phase of the application what i can show you instead
is my user where i do have the sponsorship enabled because the form is the same is just already filled let's move to my other user alright as you probably know if you're following this channel this is my main user i have this sponsor's dashboard button over here if i click on it it will take me to indeed the sponsor account and this is exactly the same kind of page you would see when the second phase of your application is opened up for you the only difference as i said before is that i already have all
the information filled in as you can see from the green ticks and the active label over here but when these happen for you you will be inserting all the information over here with who you are an introduction of yourself some features repo you wanna showcase and then when it's done when the second phase of your application is completed and your profile is accepted into the sponsorship program you can come back here and first of all set your sponsor tiers in my case i have defined two sponsor tiers as you can see over here one with
a symbolic one dollar a month and another one with a ten dollar a month and you can decide the amount and also of course you can set your own text to describe the tier to your user you can always add a new tier let's say i want to have a 50 per month tier and as i said you can set a description you can save it as a draft or publish it not gonna publish it right now but i think you got the idea you can also of course change one of the tiers you have
you can change the description but you cannot change the tier price and the reason for this is that this pricing tier has been already published so i guess it makes sense because if someone already subscribed to this tier or has seen it and is considering subscribing you don't want to change the details for them just out of the blue what you can do though is retiring a tier which means that the users that are in that tier if you have anyone subscribing to the tier already will keep sponsoring you with the same amount however no
new users will be able to join that tier finally you can set your goals and when setting a goal you can either target a number of sponsors or a certain amount in my case i decided to set a goal for 10 sponsors but you can also change it to a certain amount per month that you want to reach and in the description of your goal you should also say why you think that that goal for you is important and what you would do when you reach that goal for example if you set a goal for
2 000 a month you may want to say that if you reach the 2 000 a month you will resign from your work and dedicate completely to the open source project you're working on or something like that when you're going through all of that you can enable the sponsorship in your ripple as we've seen before using your username and what that does is when you click on sponsor you will have here this github sponsor button and same thing on the side of your repo as we've seen before and when you click on it or when
your user click on it will see your github sponsor profile in which there are all the information you've provided in your sponsor dashboard they can see your goal over here they can see the tiers you have defined and of course they can select a tier they want to subscribe to and eventually sponsor you a very cool thing it up does is prorating the amount for example as you can see here i've selected a 10 steer however since is the 11th of march github if i decide to continue with the sponsorship will charge me only 7.41
and then on the next billing cycle i'll be charged the 10 so this is pretty cool isn't it just to recap as i said before you have two ways to sponsor your project and to make money on github through github directly or through third-party providers like patreon or even custom links like you see my paypal me over here remember that you need to apply for the sponsorship program before you can enable it and as i said before remember that you need to be providing value to your users and your community if not most likely they
will not be interested in sponsoring you and sending you money also let me know in the comment section below what do you think about the sponsor program if you are already into it and if you're already receiving money from your users you may also want to consider watching this video right here because it contains a lot of insights on how you can use github like a pro but that's it for me thanks so much for watching i really hope you enjoyed it hit the like button below subscribe if you haven't already and i see you
in the next video here at color days [Music]
