It's amazing how much the presence of another person can affect us sometimes . I'm sure many of you are familiar with the feeling of calm and security that you can feel when you are around certain people. It may seem incredible, but the presence of another person can even save a life.
The story I want to tell you proves how strong the connection between people can be. The nurse's act went down in history because she saved the life of a dying newborn girl by placing her twin sister next to her. It all started on October 17, 1995, when twin sisters, Kiri and Brielle Jackson, were born in a Massachusetts hospital .
However, their beginnings in life were not easy. Because they were born 12 weeks early , the twins weighed only 1 kilogram. After birth, they were placed in separate incubators.
Kiri's condition quickly improved and she gained weight, but the same could not be said for her sister Brielle: she had difficulty breathing on her own, her face was blue, and she often cried and screamed. A few days later, Brielle's condition began to deteriorate. Pediatric intensive care unit nurse Gail Kasparian did everything possible to help the baby.
She independently picked her up , nursed her, and allowed Brielle’s father to do the same. She wrapped the baby in a blanket, cleaned her tiny nose and tried to calm her down, but all attempts were in vain. One day Gail remembered something she had once heard about in Europe.
It was really against the policy and rules of the hospital, but Gail was so worried about the child that she decided to try. She placed Brielle in an incubator that contained her sister Kiri. Almost immediately, Brielle clung to Kiri.
Brielle, who was in a very bad state, perked up a little. She began to breathe easier, her incessant crying finally subsided, and her face acquired a healthy color. In the weeks that followed, as Brielle remained by Kiri's side, her condition steadily improved.
A local newspaper photographer managed to capture a special moment in the twins' lives that will always remain iconic. A real miracle happened when a nurse placed her twin sister next to a dying girl. Now they are already adults, but once, very tiny, they were able to survive together the difficult beginning of their life’s journey, the memory of which was preserved in the photo.
This photo of the sisters cuddling in the incubator attracted a lot of media attention. Later, the photo quickly spread on the Internet and even appeared on the cover of Life and Reader's Digest magazines. The media attention on the girls' parents, Heidi and Paul Jackson, became so annoying that at one point they had to change their phone number.
Absolutely everyone wanted to know about the twins. This was the first such experience for the hospital, for which Gail Gasparyan received high praise from the management. You can’t separate twins, Gail thought and did the right thing.
