hello and welcome to jxj aviation in this video we will be looking at what are the primary control surfaces in an aircraft and how they cause an aircraft to pitch roll and yaw first let's see what are the primary flight controls in an aircraft the elevator rudder and the ailerons are the primary control surfaces in an aircraft these control surfaces are installed on all fixed-wing aircraft to safely control it during flight where are the primary flight controls located the elevator is located on the trailing edge of the horizontal stabilizer the ailerons are located on the
trailing edge of the wing and the rudder is located on the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer what are the moments created by these flight controls the elevators create a pitch up or a pitch down moment the ailerons create a rolling moment towards the left or the right the rudder creates a yawing moment towards the left or the right what are moments and how are these moments created a moment can be defined as the tendency of an object to rotate about a certain axis or about a particular point the primary flight controls create a moment
about the three axis longitudinal lateral and normal axis or about the center of gravity the center of gravity can be considered as a fixed point within the aircraft when the elevators are deflected upward a downward force is created at the tail section which will cause a pitch up moment about the center of gravity similarly when the elevator is deflected downward an upward force is created at the tail section which will cause a pitch down moment about the center of gravity now let's look at the ailerons the ailerons deflect in opposite directions so one aileron will
deflect up and the other aileron will deflect down the aileron which deflects downward will create more lift on that wing and the aileron which deflects upward will reduce the lift on that wing this will create a rolling moment about the center of gravity the rolling moment may be towards the left or the right the rudder is a single surface which can reflect towards one side when the radar deflects towards the right a force is created towards the left which will create a yaw moment towards the right about the center of gravity if the rudder is
