hey hey welcome into the area hello and welcome to Uppsala and may be useful scenery of Sweden so when summer think Sweden what's the first thing that comes to your mind ever Swedish meatballs or snows or the Vikings that's one of those for most people cruel mean ghastly Vikings that rob people of their happiness well that is just a misconception of course some of the Vikings were big meanies but they were just a normal civilization the terms Vikings is used to describe people who live in Scandinavia between the 8th and the 11th century today we're
going to go way back to see how they live their daily lives come along now first things first before we talk about anything else you know those Viking helmets that they used to wear with huge horns sticking out the side well they never wore those that idea was an inventor by costume designer for an opera in the 1800s and it was kind of continued in Hollywood movies innocence but we know the truth next time you say to your parents that is so unfair just be grateful that you are not born in the Viking times Viking
children have it rough they had to grow up very quickly to be able to do the jobs that the adult Vikings had to do from a young age boys would be taught how to raise trade and expand their community it was hard work and girls for most of their lives were doing housework chores and working on the farm so think about that next time babies were treated very well they were given a little gift to keep away any illness or evil spirits most of the time it would be a little version of Thor's hammer which
they calls you know deciding on names was pretty easy because they had quite traditional names boys would be named after their father so laughs son and Eric would become last erection and girls most of the time were named after their mother or their grandmother psyching children did not go to school Hey they were taught about Viking history religion and law because I didn't have any books this was taught through song and through stories for fun and they weren't learning about those things they were make up riddles and poems to teach their friends and they would
play a game that was quite similar to today's chip what else they would do is tip stiff drinks they would pick up rocks and boulders and see who could throw them the further swiffer through it the service was the strongest and they were the winner some of the stories that were told were about Norse mythology it was told that Thor was the god of strength and the god of storms so anytime that it got stormy and it felt like the ground was rattling they sort met straw with a flying across the sky in his chariot
now I'm here outside the government upsala Museum we're about to go inside and learn a little bit more about Vikings let's go [Music] nowadays in our houses we are very lucky we have heaters and other things to keep us warm during winter the Vikings didn't have such luxury here in Scandinavia it is freezing so I can only imagine what it was like back then they had to build their houses strong to battle the winter they build houses specific rules to keep out the air they built it to kind of look like mounds under the ground
sometimes when they had spires it got really smoky inside because they were keeping all the air out which meant that all the smoke inside had nowhere else to go the other thing that was different was bath time it didn't happen very often so you can imagine till good as well what they would do would go to a bath house which is what we call the Sorna nowadays in the middle they would have stones and they would pour hot water on it to create steam that clean themselves in the steam then let go outside get some
branches drive themselves off and then don't run around in the snow I bet bath time was very difficult for those parents Vikings were exceptional sailors traveling the Seas without a map or a compass they would get around in boats like this for long boats or dragon ship long boats were long bar that we use for trading and exploring the long work to be up to 25 to 30 meters long and could fit up to 60 big Vikings inside us sometimes the ships would be carved to look like dragons or sea creatures this is so that
could keep away the enemies or any scary sea creatures out where our sailing sometimes when they were traveling that come up to really shallow waters but all have to hop out pick up the longboat and walk them across the shallow water they would have had to have very strong muscle can you show your next-door neighbor your biggest writing a sermon the Viking ships was the Hamilton he would fear the boats in the right direction the lookout they would look out for any danger but also look out for land it would be as Baylor can you
bail out the water of any water got inside the ship and then they were the crew and of oarsmen there's a big strong arms and they would roll the boat in the correct way if you look behind me you'll see some large burial mounds leave out burial grounds that were man-made by the Vikings the Vikings strongly believed in an afterlife once you had passed on from this earth we know of Barry's there would be buried with things that they would need for their next life and that was normally based on what they did in the
life before they passed away so a warrior would be buried with weapons a fun would be buried with things that they used on the farms kings or Royals would be buried in a boat under the ground surrounded by their most prized positions if a family could not afford for this person to be buried in a ship they would put stones on the side in the shape of a ship [Music] okay activity time you are all going to become historians historians are very knowledgeable people and are very good at picking up clues just like you go
