morning set the tone for the rest of your day I used to be someone who would rush through mornings barely having time to think let alone study but one day I realized that the key to fluency could be hidden in those first few hours of my day so I decided to try something Different something simple but powerful let me tell you about a personal experience a a couple of years ago I started waking up earlier to dedicate just 30 minutes to listening to English content it wasn't anything fancy just podcasts or short stories the first
day I felt unsure it was early I was tired and the content seemed harder than expected but then I realized that I was improving slowly I started recognizing new words and phrases and before long I Was understanding more and more each day one of my morning habits now is is to spend 10 minutes reading out loud yes it's simple but it's so effective I grab a short article or a few sentences from my favorite book and I read them aloud at first my pronunciation was a bit off but over time I started to feel more
confident speaking this little habit has done wonders for both my listening and Writing skills when you read aloud you start hearing the sounds of the words in your head which helps with listening and understanding I'll share another story about a friend of mine Emily she was struggling with English for years she didn't have a lot of time but she wanted to improve Emily started her day by listening to a few minutes of an English podcast while getting ready for work over time she found that she could Listen and understand more of the podcast her vocabulary
grew and she even began to use new words in her daily conversations her morning routine became a key part of her Improvement now I know not everyone has hours to spend on English practice but just taking a few minutes each morning to expose yourself to English can make a huge difference one of my favorite habits is listening to real life stories in English not only does it help with Listening but it also inspires me to write about my own experiences it's a win-win situation think about it what could you change in your morning routine to
improve your English could you start listening to English while having your coffee maybe you could dedicate a few minutes to writing in English before you start your day it's these small changes that make a big impact let me share another habit that made a real difference for me I Started keeping a journal in English every morning it didn't need to be long or complicated just a few sentences about what I plan to do that day how I was feeling or something interesting I learned at first it felt a little strange but over time I noticed
that my writing improved I was using more diverse vocabulary and my sentences started to flow more naturally writing every morning gave me the confidence to write longer texts Later on like emails or even stories one of my students Michael also tried journaling and he saw amazing results at first he wasn't sure what to write about so I suggested starting with something simple like describing his morning routine after a few weeks he came to me with a big smile and said I can't believe it Natasha I'm writing full paragraphs now without even thinking about it the
small habit of writing Every morning became a powerful tool for improving his writing skills another key habit is setting aside time to review new vocabulary every morning I use flashcards to help me memorize new words it doesn't take much time but it helps me to keep the words fresh in my mind this habit is especially useful because it helps improve both my speaking and writing skills when you learn new words and practice them daily you start to use them in conversations without even Realizing it one day I decided to test this habit with a conversation
I called my friend Sarah and we talked about our plans for the weekend normally I would struggle with finding the right words but because I had been reviewing new vocabulary every morning I was able to use a few new words I had just learned Sarah noticed and she said wow Natasha your English is really Improving that little moment made me realize how powerful these small habits really are but let's talk about another habit Listening to English while doing other things we all have busy mornings and sometimes it's hard to sit down and focus that's where
listening during routine activities can be helpful for example I listen to English podcasts while I'm making breakfast or getting ready for the day it's an easy way to Sneak in some practice without taking extra time I remember the first time I tried this I was making breakfast and listening to an English podcast at first I couldn't catch all the words but over time I started picking up more and more my listening skills grew because I was constantly exposing myself to Natural English conversations it it was amazing how something so simple could help me improve now
here's a tip that really Worked for me try listening to podcasts that tell real life stories these types of podcasts are usually slower and easier to understand but they also give you a chance to hear natural conversations plus the stories are interesting I listened to one about a woman who moved to a new country and had to learn the language from scratch hearing her exper experiences made me realize that everyone struggles with language at first but with Persistence it gets better if you can relate to that try listening to real life stories in English as
part of your morning routine it doesn't matter if you understand every word the more you listen the better you'll become at picking up the meaning of sentences and phrases over time you'll start to feel more comfortable with real life English which will improve both your listening and writing skills Remember it doesn't matter if you start with just 5 minutes each day small habits like listening to English while you get ready or journaling for a few minutes will help you improve every day it's all about consistency and as you keep practicing you'll notice how much more
confident you become in your English now let's talk about how to make these habits stick the biggest challenge when trying to improve a skill is consistency at first you might feel Excited about waking up earlier or listening to English while while you get ready but after a few days it can start to feel like a chore this happens to everyone even to me I remember feeling tired one morning and thinking do I really need to do this today but I reminded myself of the progress I was making and it helped me push through that moment
of Doubt one trick I use to stay consistent is setting small achievable goals for Myself each morning for example I'll tell myself today I'm going to learn five new words and use them in a sentence or I'll listen to 10 minutes of English while I make breakfast it's important to set goals that feel doable so you don't get overwhelmed that way when you complete them you feel a sense of accomplishment this positive reinforcement makes it easier to keep going another tip is to track your Progress you don't need anything fancy just a notebook or a
note on your phone keep a record of the new words you learn the podcasts you listen to or the writing exercises you complete when you look back and see how much you've learned over the weeks it will motivate you to continue I still look at the notes I took when I first started and it always reminds me of how far I've come let me tell you about a time when tracking my Progress really helped there was a month when I was focusing on listening and writing at the end of the month I went through my
notes and realized that I had learned over 100 new words I had also written more than 10 journal entries that was a huge achievement for me and it gave me the confidence to keep going even if you don't see dramatic changes right away these small steps will add up over time if you're finding it hard to stay motivated it can help to Have a partner or friend to practice with this doesn't have to be a professional teacher just someone who is also learning English or even a native speaker who's willing to help you can set
up a time each morning or a few times a week where you chat with your partner for 10 15 minutes maybe you can share your morning routine with each other in English or talk about the latest podcast episode you listen to It's amazing how having someone to Practice with can make learning feel more fun and less lonely I've had a few students who found a language buddy and saw great improvements in their speaking and listening for example my friend Maria and I started a morning practice routine a few months ago we agreed to listen to
a podcast together every morning and then discuss it in English at first we struggled with pronunciation and understanding some Words But as time went on it got easier we also started using the new words we learned in our conversations it was a fun way to practice and now we both feel much more confident in our English skills now let's talk about another habit that can have a huge impact exposing yourself to different types of English content you see when you only listen to one kind of English like formal news reports your understanding becomes limited but
if you Mix things up and listen to a variety of content your listening skills will improve faster for example I love listening to interviews with different people some interviews are with experts While others are with everyday people sharing their stories these different types of English help you learn new vocabulary and different speaking Styles a few months ago I started listening to interviews with authors About their books at first I could barely understand half of what they were saying because they used complex language but I didn't give up I kept listening every morning and over time
I began to understand more I could follow the conversation and even learn some new vocabulary this habit improved my listening skills so much and I also started enjoying the content more now I feel confident listening to interviews on all kinds of topics whether it's Technology travel or even cooking another great way to improve your listening skills is by watching English videos with subtitles but here's the trick start with subtitles in your native language and then switch switch to English subtitles as you become more comfortable at first you might rely on your native language subtitles but
gradually you'll find that you don't need them anymore I remember watching a Documentary in English with subtitles in my native language after a few weeks I switched to English subtitles and it made a huge difference I could understand the words better and get used to hearing different accents to your make this even more helpful try pausing the video every so often to repeat what you hear I did this with a few TED talks and it helped me practice my pronunciation and listening skills at the same time it's Also useful for Writing Practice because it teaches
you how words are spelled and used in context sometimes the key to improving your English isn't about how much time you spend studying it's about the consistency of those small actions you take every day these small changes in your routine can lead to Big improvements over time even if you start with just 5 minutes each morning it will add Up one of the things I love about learning languages is that it's a journey every little step you take brings you closer to fluency and every moment spent practicing counts one more thing I want to share
with you is how important it is to set a routine that works for you and that's enjoyable when learning English it can be easy to think you need to follow strict rules or be very rigid about your study schedule but I've learned that When I make learning English something I look forward to it feels a lot less like work and I improve so much faster for example I decided to start my mornings with something fun I added a little challenge every day I would listen to a new English song and try to understand as many
words as I could at first I couldn't catch everything but over time I started recognizing phrases and even some slang the best part it felt like a game the more I listened the more my Understanding grew and not only did my listening improve but my ability to understand informal language and expressions also expanded this technique doesn't just apply to music though you can apply it to almost anything you enjoy maybe you like cooking and you want to learn more cooking related vocabulary why not try listening to cooking shows or recipe videos in English you can
follow along and learn new terms related to food and Cooking over time you notice that you can follow the recipes in English with ease and you'll have expanded your vocabulary in a fun way another way to make learning English more enjoyable is by reading content you're genuinely interested in don't just pick up textbooks or grammar exercises because you feel you should when I started reading articles about topics I love such as travel or technology I felt much more engaged I Didn't worry about understanding every single word I I just focused on enjoying the story or
the new information and without realizing it I was improving my vocabulary and listening skills the key is to make sure the material you choose is interesting to you so you're motivated to stick with it let me tell you a story about how this worked for me I used to struggle with Listening to English podcasts that focused on business topics it felt dry and hard to Stay interested but one day I switched to a podcast about travel something I love it was like a light bulb went off I could understand more and I enjoyed the conversation
not only that but I began to pick up useful phrases that I could use in my own travels I started feeling more confident when I traveled to English speaking countries because I was familiar with the language and expressions used in those settings this experience taught me that Motivation is key when it comes to learning English if you're not excited about what you're listening to or reading it will be much harder to stay consistent and progress so don't be afraid to make English practice fun and related to your interests whether it's music podcasts videos or books
choose things that get you excited and make the learning process enjoyable now let's talk about another Morning habit that really helped me improve my speaking skills practicing speaking aloud I know it can feel awkward to speak out loud when you're alone but trust me it works wonders when I first started practicing I would repeat sentences from podcasts or videos out loud at first I just mimicked the speakers but over time I started speaking in my own words I would talk about my plans for the day or describe a Recent experience in English even if I
was just talking to myself it felt strange at first but it helped me become more comfortable with speaking speaking out loud even when you're alone builds confidence and helps you practice pronunciation it's not about perfection it's about getting comfortable with the flow of the language I noticed that I started thinking in English more naturally Instead of translating from my native language in my head this was a huge turning point for me because it made conversations feel more fluid and less forced and guess what the more I practiced the easier it became to speak English without
hesitating speaking practice doesn't always have to be with a partner or a teacher you can practice on your own by recording yourself one thing I like to do is record my voice while I speak about a Certain topic then I listen to it and think about where I could improve maybe I notice that I need to work on my pronunciation or use more varied vocabulary the feedback I get from listening to my recordings is invaluable because it helps me pinpoint areas for improvement that I might not have noticed other otherwise this technique also helped me
improve my fluency in the beginning I would get stuck on words or phrases and I would have to pause and think but after consistently speaking aloud every morning I started to speak more fluidly I was able to express my ideas without stopping and that made me feel more confident in my speaking abilities it's not just about speaking perfectly it's about making progress and becoming fortable with the language the next habit I want to talk about is the importance of taking breaks you might think that if you want to Improve your English quickly you need to
study for hours each day but that's not true overworking yourself can actually lead to burnout and frustration instead I found that taking regular breaks during my study sessions helps me stay focused and energized it's important to give your mind some time to relax and process everything you've learned for instance I make sure to take short breaks every 30 minutes during these Breaks I'll do something completely different maybe go for a walk or have a cup of coffee this gives my brain a chance to rest and when I return to my English practice I feel refreshed
and ready to focus again it's also helpful to switch up your activities if you've been listening to a podcast for 30 minutes take a break and try doing something different like reading an article or writing a short journal entry in English Taking breaks helps you stay productive in the long run and it makes learning more enjoyable over time I realized that when I took regular breaks I was able to retain more information and I felt less stressed about my progress It's all about finding the right balance between studying and taking care of your mental and
physical well-being if you're not sure where to start try using a technique called the Pomodoro Technique it's simple study for 25 minutes then take a 5minute break after four study sessions take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes this method helps you stay focused during your study time while ensuring that you don't overexert yourself I've used this technique for a while and it's made a big difference in how much I can accomplish without feeling overwhelmed I also encourage you to try Using apps or tools that help make learning more interactive and fun there are
so many great language learning apps out there that you can use during your breaks or spare moments for example apps like du lingo or memories have short interactive lessons that you can do in just a few minutes these apps help you practice vocabulary and grammar in a more engaging way and they can be a great way to keep your learning going while taking a break from your regular Routine consistency is key but don't forget to make time for rest and remember that it's okay to have days when you don't feel like studying everyone has those
moments the important thing is to keep going and get back on track the next day over time these small habits will add up and you'll see huge improvements in your English skills I'm really glad you're sticking with me for this episode because I have more powerful habits that will transform your English learning Journey so far we've talked about setting a routine incorporating things you enjoy into your practice and the importance of speaking out loud but now let's focus on something that's incredibly important and that's reflection I found that taking time to reflect on my progress
has been one of the most important habits in becoming fluent in English reflecting doesn't just mean looking at where you've improved it also means Recognizing areas where you still have room to grow it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of new vocabulary or grammar rules but without reflection we can miss the opportunity to improve even faster every few weeks I say sit down with a notebook and think about the English I've learned I ask myself questions like what words or phrases do I still struggle with or where do I need more practice let
me give you a real life example of how this has helped me I Remember a few months ago I was practicing listening to podcasts in English but I started feeling frustrated because I couldn't understand everything especially when speakers were talking fast so I took a step back and ref reflected on my progress I thought about how much better I had gotten at understanding slower more deliberate speech that realization made me feel more confident and motivated to keep Working on the fast-paced conversations by reflecting on my progress I could also identify specific areas where I needed
to focus more for example I noticed that I was having trouble with phrasal verbs so I decided to dedicate a few weeks to learning them instead of feeling stuck or overwhelmed reflection helped me see where I could make small adjustments that would lead to Big improvements in my English another reflection tool I use is Journaling writing in English every day is a habit I can't recommend enough at first it felt awkward and my writing wasn't great but over time I saw how much it helped me improve my vocabulary sentence structure and overall fluency it's not
about perfection what matters is practicing regularly and seeing how your writing evolves I started by writing simple sentences but soon I was writing short Paragraphs about my day my thoughts or things I had learned one of my favorite things to do now is to write about my morning habits for instance after I finish my morning routine I take a few minutes to write about what went well what I struggled with and what I want to improve tomorrow this habit has made me more mindful of my Lear learning process and it's become a tool for self-reflection
it's also great for Improving my writing because I get to use new words and experiment with different ways of expressing myself in English speaking of self-reflection something that has helped me with both my listening and speaking is having regular conversations with others who are learning English if you don't have many people to speak with in person try finding language exchange Partners online I know it can be a little intimidating At first but these conversations don't have to be perfect they're about practice and making progress in my own experience I've learned that when you speak with
someone who's also learning you're both more relaxed and can help each other along the way for example I once had a conversation with a friend who was learning English in the same way I was we would talk about our goals the difficulties we faced and the fun things We had learned recently L sometimes we would laugh at our mistakes and other times we would both be surprised by how much we understood these conversations were so valuable because they kept me motivated and confident I realized that I didn't need to be perfect I just needed to
practice I also found that Listening to English speakers in real life situations like at a coffee shop a restaurant or even while traveling helped me improve My listening skills being being exposed to Natural everyday conversations is something I highly recommend and even if you don't have the chance to interact in person there are plenty of online communities where you can listen to real life conversations one of my favorites is watching YouTube videos where people talk about their daily lives or share personal stories what I've found is that listening to real conversations Challenges me in a
way that learning from a textbook doesn't for example I once watched a YouTube video where someone was telling a funny story about their morning routine the speaker talked quickly used informal phrases and added some jokes at first I struggled to understand everything but I kept rewinding the video and paying close attention by the end of the video I understood almost all of it it felt like a small victory but those small Victories really add up over time I also noticed that I began using some of the phrases I learned from that video in my own
conversations this is another reason why mixing up your English practice with real life content is so important it exposes you to slang idiomatic expressions and different accents all of which are essential if you want to sound natural and understand native speakers plus it makes learning more enjoyable every time You understand something new or recognize a phrase you've heard before it boosts your confidence and keeps you motivated you might be wondering how can I find these real life op opportunities to practice there are so many ways here are just a few suggestions that I've personally tried
language exchange platforms websites and apps like hello talk tandem or speaky connect language Learners from around the world you can Find a partner to chat with in English whether you're looking for text-based chats or voice messages these platforms are free and offer a chance to practice with people from different cultures watching movies and TV shows if you love movies or TV shows try watching them in English choose ones that you're already familiar with so you can focus on listening to the language rather than trying to follow the plot turn on the subtitles in English to
help you keep up With new words social media follow English-speaking content creators on platforms like Instagram YouTube or Tik Tok many creators share personal stories or interesting facts that will expose you to new vocabulary and expressions meetups and local groups if you have the opportunity join a local group that meets to practice languages many cities have groups where people meet in person to speak different languages even if you're shy at first These group settings provide a safe environment to practice and make new friends by surrounding yourself with English content and real life interactions you'll begin
to see a big difference in how quickly you can understand and speak the language but remember consistency is key it's not about how many hours you study it's about making small positive habits that add up over time now let's talk about something else that I think will really Help you setting clear goals for yourself one of the reasons I've been able to stick with my learning routine is because I've set clear achievable goals without goals it's easy to lose focus and feel like you're not making progress so I've learned that setting both short-term and long-term
goals keeps me motivated and on track for instance one of my short-term goals was to improve my listening comprehension I set a goal to listen to 10 minutes of English audio every morning for a week this goal was simple but it helped me build the habit of listening regularly over time I increased the amount of listening practice and now I listen to English content for at least 30 minutes every day I also set long-term goals like being able to have a full conversation in English without feeling nervous or relying too much on my native language
setting both types of goals helps me stay focused on the big picture While also celebrating small wins along the way I'm so glad you're still with me because we're about to dive even deeper into the habits that can really make a difference in your English learning Journey so far we've covered things like creating a routine reflecting on progress and setting goals but now let's talk about one of the most powerful habits that helped me improve my fluency and that's the habit of learning from mistakes I can't tell you how many times I've made mistakes while
speaking or writing in English it's completely normal and it's a big part of the learning process when I first started learning English I was terrified of making mistakes I would avoid speaking because I didn't want to say something wrong but over time I realized that mistakes are actually one of the best ways to learn when you make a mistake it's a sign that you're pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and trying Something new let me give you an example of how learning from my mistakes has helped me a while ago I was practicing my
speaking skills by having conversations with a language partner online during one conversation I mispronounced a word that sounded similar to another word and my partner didn't understand what I was saying instead of feeling embarrassed I asked them to correct me and they explained the difference between the two Words that mistake stuck with me because I made a mental note of the correct pronunciation and I made sure to practice it again and again what's great about learning from mistakes is that it helps you avoid making the same mistakes in the future every time I make a
mistake I try to understand why it happened and how I can fix it this process has made me more confident in my speaking because I now know that I can recover from mistakes and continue the Conversation without worrying too much in fact I've found that embracing mistakes actually speeds up my learning it's not about being perfect it's about improving every day when I stopped worrying about making mistakes I became more willing to speak up and use new words or phrases and this leads to more practice more growth and eventually more fluency one of the ways
I've also learned to Embrace mistakes is by keeping a mistake journal after every Speaking practice or conversation I write down any mistakes I made and what I learned from them sometimes I even write down new vocabulary or phrases that I want to remember for next time this habit has been incredibly helpful because it gives me a chance to review my mistakes and see my progress it also helps me feel more comfortable making mistakes in the future knowing that I'm learning from Them now let's shift gears a little bit and talk about something that has been
a GameChanger for me using technology to improve my English technology has opened up so many doors for language Learners and there are so many tools out there that can make learning more efficient and fun I remember when I first started learning English I was using textbooks but I quickly Realized that I needed more than just that I wanted to immerse myself in the language and experience it in real everyday contexts that's when I started using apps and websites that allow me to practice my listening reading and speaking skills one app that really helped me is
dualingo which has fun interactive lessons that teach vocabulary grammar and pronunciation it's an easy way to practice on the go And I could track my progress every day but technology goes beyond Just Apps and websites social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram have been fantastic resources for me as well watching videos in English not only helps improve my listening skills but also exposes me to different accents and ways of speaking for example I follow a couple of YouTubers who share their travel experiences in English these videos are great because they're not Only fun to watch
but they also teach me useful phrases and expressions that I can use in everyday conversations another great tool I use is podcasts I listen to podcast on various topics from personal development to technology and lifestyle the best part about podcasts is that they help me get used to listening to Natural fast-paced English conversations I recommend listening to Podcasts that feature real stories or interviews because they'll help you get used to different accents tones and speaking Styles plus many podcasts come with transcripts so you can read along while listening which is great for improving both listening
and reading skills I also like using language exchange apps like hello talk where you can chat with native speakers of English this app allows you to practice speaking With people from all over the world at first I was a little shy but I soon realized that everyone is there to learn and they're all super supportive it's a fantastic way to practice speaking in a low pressure environment but technology isn't just about practicing English it's also about making your practice more interactive and fun for instance I use online flash cards to study new vocabulary the app
I use allows me to create my own flashcards with words or Phrases I want to learn it's a simple way to review vocabulary every day and the best part is that I can study whenever I have a few free minutes whether I'm on the bus waiting for a meeting or taking a break at home using technology in your learning process can also help you stay motivated for example you can set goals and track your progress through different apps some apps even offer Rewards or points when you complete Certain lessons or exercises this adds an element
of fun and challenge to your learning which keeps you engaged but of course it's important not to rely solely on technology while it's a helpful tool the real key to fluency lies in using English in real life situations and one of the best ways to practice is by speaking with native speakers or other Learners one of my favorite ways to practice English in real life Situations is by using English in my daily life I've made it a habit to speak to myself in English especially when I'm alone at home or running errands for example when
I'm making breakfast in the morning I'll say things like okay I'm going to toast the bread or now I need to put the eggs in the pan at first it felt a little strange to speak to myself in English but over time it became more natural it also helped me get used to thinking in English rather than Translating from my native language I've also started using English in my social life when I meet friends who are also learning English we sometimes switch to English for part of our conversation it's a fun way to practice and
even if we make mistakes it's no big deal the goal is to communicate and improve not to be perfect now let's talk about something else that's crucial in your journey to fluency consistency one of the most Important habits you can develop is practicing English every day even if it's just for a few minutes when I first started learning English I wasn't consistent at all I would study for a few days then take a break for weeks but once I made English practice a daily habit I started seeing significant improvements in my skills I know it's
not always easy to find time every day especially if you're busy but I've learned that it's better To practice for 10 or 15 minutes every day than to cram for hours once a week it's those small consistent efforts that lead to Big results I usually make it a goal to practice in the morning right after my routine so it becomes a natural part of my day this way I don't have to think about it I just do it one way I stay consistent is by setting a timer for my practice sessions whether I'm listening to
a podcast writing in my journal or practicing vocabulary I set a Timer for 15 minutes and focus completely on English during that time this helps me stay focused and prevents distractions it's also rewarding to know that after 15 minutes of practice I can check it off my list for the day another way I make consistency easier is by creating a schedule for my English practice I dedicate certain times of the day to specific activities Maybe in the morning I focus on listening and In the evening I work on speaking having a schedule helps me stay
organized and ensures that I don't forget to practice it also prevents me from feeling overwhelmed because I know exactly what to focus on at each point during the day so as we wrap up this section of the episode think about how you can incorporate some of these habits into your daily routine what can you start doing today to take your English to the next level whether it's learning from Your mistakes using technology speaking with others or staying consistent each of these habits will help you improve your English listening and speaking skills these small changes in
your daily routine can lead to Big results and as you continue to practice you'll notice that you're not just learning English you're living it the more you expose yourself to the language the more natural it will feel remember the journey to fluency is not race it's a Process and with each step you're getting closer to your goal I'm so glad you're still here with me and I hope you're starting to see how powerful these morning habits can be for your English learning as we go deeper let me share with you another habit that really made
a difference for me developing a mindset of curiosity I've always beli that a curious mind is a key to learning Anything not just languages when I was first learning English I wasn't just focusing on memorizing grammar rules or vocabulary instead I developed a habit of always asking myself why and how for example when I came across a new word I didn't just memorize it and move on I would ask myself why does this word mean what it does or how can I use this word in different situations this mindset of curiosity Made my Learning Journey
so much more engaging and exciting it helped me dive deeper into the language and understand the connections between words phrases and even cultural meanings for instance I remember learning the word Empower it wasn't just a word I learned to use in a sentence I asked myself what does it mean to empower someone how does this Word connect to leadership motivation and confidence this curiosity about the meaning behind the words made me more engaged in my learning and it also helped me use the language in a more natural and nuanced way but it's not just about
asking questions being curious also means being open to exploring new things whether it's learning about different cultures trying out new expressions or listening to English content in various forms one thing I started doing was watching movies and TV shows in English but not just any movies I made it a habit to watch movies with characters that I could relate to or who spoke in a way that I could learn from this practice allowed me to hear natural conversations which made me more aware of how people actually use the language in everyday situations it wasn't just
about Memorizing lines from a script it was about listening to how people interact in the real world this curiosity also extended to my interactions with native speakers every time I spoke with someone in English I would ask them questions about their language and culture this wasn't just for the sake of practicing English it was about understanding the context behind certain phrases and expressions I remember once Asking a native speaker why they use the phrase kick the bucket to mean someone passed away I was so curious about the origin of this phrase and the speaker explained
that it came from a time when people would hang themselves by kicking over a bucket this kind of historical knowledge helped me appreciate the language in a whole new way being curious also means not being afraid to make mistakes or ask questions in fact one of the best ways to learn is by Asking questions when I started practicing my English I was shy about asking for clarification when I didn't understand something I would just nod and smile pretending to know what people were saying but this didn't help me improve it wasn't until I started actively
asking questions that my learning took off I would ask could you explain that again or what does that word mean in this Context by asking I not only got better at understanding the language but also built stronger connections with the people I was speaking with another habit that helped me grow in my English learning Journey was reflecting on my day in English this is a habit I picked up after listening to a podcast where the speaker encouraged listeners to replay their day in their minds at night I thought it was a simple idea but it
worked wonders for me before going to Sleep I would review everything I had done during the day and think about what I had said in English this helped me identify areas where I could improve and it also gave me an opportunity to practice the vocabulary or phrases I had learned during the day sometimes I would even make a mental note of specific words or phrases that I had used or heard during the day and I would challenge myself to use them in New sentences the next day this practice helped me solidify new vocabulary in my
mind and made me more confident when speaking for example let me tell you about a time I went grocery shopping I had been practicing the names of different fruits and vegetables and when I walked into the store I started naming everything in English as I picked it up tomato cucumber lettuce banana I said to myself it felt a little awkward at first but as I kept doing it I noticed that I was becoming more comfortable with the vocabulary the next time I went to the store I was able to confidently ask the store clerk for
help in English using all this habit of reflecting on my day also helped me realize when I had trouble understanding certain things for example if I had struggled to follow a conversation I would think back to what went wrong was it the speed of the speaker Was it the vocabulary was it a specific phrase I didn't understand reflecting on these moments helped me pinpoint areas where I needed to improve and gave me the motivation to keep practicing another thing I noticed when I started reflecting on my day was that it helped me recognize the progress
I was making sometimes it can feel like you're not improving because the changes happened slowly but when I took the time To look back and think about everything I had learned I could see that I was constantly getting better even if I didn't notice it in the moment it was this consistent practice of reviewing my day that helped me stay motivated and encouraged me to keep going one key habit that I can't emphasize enough is reading aloud in English at first I was nervous about reading aloud because I wasn't sure if my pronunciation was correct
but over time I realized that Reading aloud was one of the best ways to practice both my speaking and listening skills when I read aloud I could hear the words I was saying and it helped me identify areas where my pronunciation could improve it also gave me the chance to practice speaking at a natural pace and using the correct Rhythm and intonation I started with simple books and articles and as I became more confident I moved on to more complex Texts I would even record myself reading and listen to the playback to see if I
could hear any mistakes this allowed me to correct myself and improve my pronunciation reading aloud also helped me get more comfortable with speaking in front of others for example when I had a conversation with a native speaker I found that I could speak more fluently and with less hesitation because I had Already practiced my speaking skills by reading aloud it made me more confident and less worried about making mistakes as you can see each of these habits being curious reflecting on your day learning from your mistakes and reading aloud are all connected they build upon
each other and help you improve your listening and speaking skills in a natural and consistent way the more you practice These habits the more fluent and confident you'll become in English it's about making English a part of your daily life not just something you do during study sessions the more you immerse yourself in the language the more it becomes second nature to you let's move on now to a very practical habit using English in real world situations I know we've already touched On this a little bit but let's dive deeper real world practice is one
of the fastest ways to improve your fluency the more you speak and listen to English in actual conversations the faster you'll improve I remember when I first started speaking English with native speakers I was so nervous but the more I practiced the more comfortable I became for example I started using English when ordering food at a restaurant at first I felt nervous about Making a mistake but I realized that people are usually very understanding when you're learning I would ask for things like could I have the soup of the day please or how much is
the special today slowly but surely these simple interactions built my confidence and I began to feel more comfortable in everyday conversations I'm really happy to hear that you're enjoying this so far it's amazing to see how much progress we can Make when we build these life-changing morning habits I think it's time to take a closer look at how we can integrate these habits into our daily routine in a way that feels natural and doesn't overwhelm us one important habit that has really helped me and I'm sure it can help you too is making listening a
daily practice you don't always have to sit down with a textbook to learn in fact some of my most productive language learning moments have come from passive Listening where I'm not actively trying to learn but I'm just letting the language flow around me for example when I wake up in the morning the first thing I do is grab my phone and listen to a podcast or Audi book in English I'm not necessarily sitting down to take notes or analyze the content I just listen while I'm getting ready for the day brushing my teeth making coffee
getting dressed all while having English in the background It's a simple way to immerse yourself in the language without putting too much pressure on yourself at first I didn't understand everything but that's okay I just focused on catching key words and phrases and over time I began to pick up patterns and how native speakers use certain Expressions the more I exposed myself to the language the more I noticed how the speakers adjusted their tone paused between thoughts or emphasized certain Words these little things might seem insignificant at first but they add up and they've really
helped me become more confident in understanding spoken English another key point is to not be afraid of repetition repetition is one of the most powerful Tools in language learning for example after listening to a podcast episode in the morning I would listen to the same episode again later in the day this time I would focus on things I Missed the first time or try to repeat some of the sentences or phrases I heard listening to the same content multiple times helps reinforce your understanding and allows you to pick up on new details that you might
have missed in your first listen this habit gave me a better ear for the language and helped me internalize new vocabulary and expressions but listening isn't just about passively absorbing language it's also about actively engaging with what You hear one way I like to do this is by summarizing what I've listened to after listening to a podcast episode I'll try to summarize it in my own words either out loud or in writing this helps me practice speaking and writing and it also forces me to process the information I've just heard by doing this I'm not
only improving my listening skills but I'm also working on my writing and speaking abilities which go hand in Hand for example ex Le I remember listening to an episode about technology where the host explained the concept of artificial intelligence at first I didn't fully understand all the technical terms but after listening a few times I could explain it in simpler terms I could say something like artificial intelligence is when computers try to think like humans and make decisions this practice of summarizing Content has helped me not only with my listening skills but also with expressing
complex ideas in simple clear language one of the most effective ways I found to improve listening is through active listening exercises you can do this by listening to short audio clips and then answering questions based on what you heard there are many resources online where you can find these exercises and they're a great way to test your comprehension and improve your Focus for example when I started using listening exercises I would listen to a news story and then try to answer questions like what what was the main idea idea of the story or what happened
first this forced me to pay close attention to the details and helped me become more aware of how the language Works in real-time conversations these active listening exercises also helped me get better at listening for Context sometimes when you hear a new word or phrase it's not always clear what it means but by focusing on the context of the conversation you can often figure out the meaning for instance I was listening to a conversation about someone's experience traveling to a new city there was a phrase I didn't understand at first to hit the road but
by listening to the rest of the conversation I was able to understand that it meant to Start the journey this is another great reason why listening to real life stories can help you improve your understanding of English in everyday situations another technique I use to improve my listening skills is shadowing shadowing is when you repeat what you hear immediately after you hear it it's a great way to practice pronunciation Rhythm and intonation for example when I listen to An English podcast I'll pause the episode after every sentence and try to repeat exactly what the speaker
said mimicking their tone and speed it might feel challenging at first but it's an excellent exercise for improving your fluency and sound natural when speaking I know it might sound difficult but I promise it's a rewarding process shadowing helps me feel more confident in my speaking skills and enables me to sound more natural when I'm having a Conversation in English it also trains my ear to recognize the Rhythm and flow of natural English speech over time it became easier for me to understand native speakers in real life situations because I had practiced repeating what I
heard in podcasts and videos another strategy that has really helped me improve my English listening and speaking is watching videos with subtitles at first I only use subtitles in my native language but I soon Realized that using English subtitles was even more beneficial English subtitles allow me to follow along with the conversation while seeing how the words are spelled this is especially helpful when I hear a new word or phrase that I don't recognize I can immediately read it in the subtitles and understand the correct pronunciation plus I can see how the words are used
in context which helps me remember them better for Example I was watching a cooking show in English and the chef mentioned a special kind of cooking technique I had never heard of before thanks to the subtitles I was able to pause the video and read the word I looked it up in a dictionary and was able to use it in my own conversations later that day using English subtitles in videos is a great way to improve both your listening comprehension and your vocabulary let's let's talk a bit more About the importance of consistency consistency is
key in language learning it's better to spend a few minutes each day practicing your listening skills than to cram everything into one long session once a week when I first started learning English I made a habit of listening to English for at least 30 minutes every morning whether it was a podcast an Audi book or a YouTube video I made sure to listen every single day this daily habit really helped me Build a strong foundation in English and over time I noticed my listening skills improving steadily the reason consistency is so powerful is that it
helps you stay connected to the language every day even if you don't have time for a long study session simply exposing yourself to English on a daily basis keeps your brain in English mode this helps you maintain your progress and it also makes it easier to pick up new things when you do have time To study more deeply it's like exercising your muscles every day the more you work at it the stronger your skills become now one habit that can really make a big difference in your listening practice is finding language Partners to practice with
whether it's a friend a tutor or even a language exchange partner having someone to talk to in English regularly will boost your confidence and help you practice Listening in real conversations I found that speaking with others in English is one of the best ways to improve my listening skills when I had regular conversations with a language partner I could hear how they use certain phrases and expressions and I was able to adapt my own speaking and listening I'm so glad to see that you're enjoying these tips and finding them helpful let's dive deeper into how
we can build listening skills and fluency Through consistent practice it's all about making language learning a natural part of your daily life so let's continue exploring more habits and strategies that can significantly help with improving your English listening skills and fluency one habit I want to emphasize is listening to different types of content I remember when I first started learning English I was focused only on the same kind of content I listened to a lot of News and educational videos but I didn't mix it up enough with different types of media as a result I
wasn't hearing the natural everyday conversations that native speakers have this led to me struggling to understand casual conversations in real life where people speak much faster and use slang or idioms that's when I realized how important it is to expose yourself to different kinds of spoken English you can listen to podcasts watch Movies or TV shows follow YouTube channels or even listen to songs in English the variety will help you improve your listening skills and get used to different accents tones and speaking speeds for example I love watching cooking shows in English Engish at first
it was challenging because the chef spoke so quickly and they used words I didn't understand but as I kept listening and watching I noticed that they used a lot Of common phrases and expressions that I could use in my own conversations plus hearing people talk about something I enjoy like cooking made the experience a lot more engaging it didn't feel like learning anymore it felt like I was just listening to something fun while improving my language skills at the same time listening to movies or TV shows is also incredibly helpful you can start with English
subtitles and later try watching Without them once you feel more confident movies and TV shows are great because they offer real life scenarios and they help you get used to how people naturally speak you'll hear different accents Regional expressions and informal language that you wouldn't necessarily find in textbooks this kind of exposure is key to understanding native speakers in everyday situations when I first started watching movies in English I would pause the Video every time I heard something new or interesting I would write down the word or phrase and try to understand its meaning by
looking at the context of the scene after doing this a few times I noticed that I could understand more without pausing and my vocabulary expanded naturally without feeling forced over time watching movies in English became one of my favorite ways to practice listening but let's not forget about the importance of speaking While you're learning speaking is a powerful tool for improving listening skills because it helps reinforce what you've heard and helps you become more comfortable with the language for example after listening to an interesting podcast or watching a TV show I try to talk about
what I've learned this helps me organize my thoughts in English and I get to practice using the new words and phrases I've picked up I can share a personal Story to illustrate this a few months ago I listened to an interview with an author on a podcast the author was talking about their book and their experiences with writing after listening to the episode I found a language partner to discuss the ideas I had just heard at first I was nervous because I didn't want to make mistakes but my language partner was very understanding and I
felt more confident after each conversation The more I spoke the more I was able to use the words and phrases I had picked up from the podcast speaking and listening go hand in hand they're both essential for fluency one technique that really helped me speak more naturally was to practice repeating sentences after I've heard them this is called shadowing and it's a technique where you try to copy what you hear immediately after the speaker says it the key here is to focus on Rhythm Intonation and pronunciation shadowing is an excellent way to get used to
the Natural flow of English and it also helps you improve your accent and pronunciation for instance I would listen to a conversation in a podcast or a TV show pause after each sentence and try to repeat it exactly as I heard it at first I found it difficult to match the speed of the speaker but I practiced every day over time I became more Comfortable with it and my speaking began to sound more fluid and natural shadowing is a great exercise because it helps you become more aware of how the language Works in real life
conversations another important habit for improving listening skills is to practice with short manageable audio clips when I first started practicing my listening I didn't listen to Long podcasts or movies because I found it overwhelming instead I focused on short Audio clips that were easier to understand and provided a clearer context listening to Shorter Clips also gave me a chance to replay the content multiple times so I could focus on specific parts of the conversation for example I listened to short stories where each episode was just 5 to 10 minutes long I could listen to it
in the morning while I was getting ready for the day and then listen to it again in the evening this allowed me to Pick up new vocabulary and phrases while also improving my listening comprehension after a few weeks I noticed that I could listen to longer cont content without feeling as overwhelmed one thing that helped me stay motivated in my learning was setting small realistic goals for myself when I first started I told myself I want to be able to understand at least 80% of what I hear in podcasts by the end of the month
it seemed like a Challenge but breaking it down into smaller steps made it achievable as I improved I adjusted my goal to listening to entire episodes without needing to pause every 30 seconds setting goals like this helps keep you focused and gives you something to strive toward another great habit is to listen with purpose instead of just listening passively focus on a specific aspect of the language you might want to focus on Understanding the vocabulary or you might focus on how the speaker is using intonation to express emotions in my own experience I started focusing
on tone and how native speakers change their voices in different situations for example in one podcast I listened to the speaker was talking about a difficult situation and I noticed how they used a softer tone to show empathy by paying attention to these small Details I was able to improve not only my listening skills but also my understanding of how language Works in real life [Music] communication listening actively and purposefully is a game changer you'll start to notice things you didn't before and you'll begin to recognize the different ways languages used depending on the context
as you can see listening isn't Just about hearing words it's about understanding absorbing and practicing what you hear it's about turning every interaction every podcast and every conversation into an opportunity to improve your English just remember that it's all about consistency and finding what works best for you there's no one- siiz fits-all approach but with dedication and these habits you'll gradually start to see Improvement whether it's through passive listening In the morning or practicing your speaking skills every little bit counts and most importantly don't be afraid to make mistakes along the way because that's how
we learn one of the best habits I've developed is to create a consistent routine that includes different types of listening and speaking practice I know it can be tempting to just focus on one method like only listening to podcasts or only watching TV shows but variety is key when it comes to improving listening skills mixing things up keeps your practice fresh exciting and most importantly more effective for example I love starting my mornings with a podcast episode especially one that focuses on daily life or real world situations these types of podcasts are full of conversations
that are very similar to what you would hear in everyday Interac actions so it's not Only good for listening but also for learning practical language as I listen I try to pay close attention to the Natural flow of the conversation the pauses the changes in tone and the way speakers emphasize certain words then I make sure to follow that up with something a little more challenging like watching a documentary or a TED talk in English the speakers in these types of content tend to speak more formally and The topics can a bit more complex but
they provide Rich vocabulary and great listening practice at first it might seem tough to follow along with the speed and the vocabulary but that's where the real growth happens you'll find that as you practice more and more your listening becomes sharper and your understanding of different accents and speaking Styles will improve something I've noticed is that I have to make a conscious effort to avoid using Subtitles every time I watch something it's so tempting to rely on them but try to watch a scene without them and focus purely on listening yes it can be challenging
but this kind of practice is vital because it helps your brain focus on sound rather than reading words it encourages your brain to process the language in a more natural way just like how you would learn your first language another habit I found valuable is to keep a listening Journal I know it Sounds a little bit like homework but hear me out it really works after listening to a podcast or watching a video in English I take a few minutes to write down what I've learned I jot down new vocabulary interesting phrases or Expressions I
heard and I don't just write down the words I also note the context in which they were used for example I might hear someone say I was on Cloud 9 and I write down what the phrase means extremely happy and in what Situation it was used by doing this I reinforce the learning and make sure I don't forget important phrases or words this exercise helps build both my vocabulary and my listening comprehension because it makes me pay close attention to every detail when I'm listening now let's talk about the power of listening to stories if
you're not already listening to stories in English I highly recommend that you start stories whether they're in the form of Audiobooks podcasts or even radio dramas are fantastic for improving your listening skills because they provide context and emotion which help your brain process and remember the language better I've found that listening to stories has been one of the most fun ways to improve my listening and the best part is that you can listen to them while doing other tasks like cooking or commuting so it doesn't feel like you're spending extra time I remember when I
First started listening to short stories in English at first first I wasn't sure how much I would understand but I was pleasantly surprised the more I listened the more I was able to catch words and phrases that I didn't understand the first time and even better I could use those new words and phrases in my conversations it felt so rewarding to see how listening to stories helped me become more comfortable with real life English if you haven't yet explored the world of audio books I encourage you to give them a try you don't have to
start with long novels there are plenty of short stories children's books or even language learning audio books designed for intermediate Learners like you I often use audiobooks as part of my morning routine I listen to a short chapter while I get ready for the day and this small amount of practice consistently boosts my listening Skills something that's often overlooked is listening to interviews listening to real conversations especially interviews with professionals or experts in a field you're interested in can teach you a lot of useful phrases and vocabulary that you wouldn't typically find in textbooks this
was a breakthrough moment for me I started listening to interviews in English and not only did it give me a closer look at how English speakers use language in professional settings but it Also gave me the confidence to speak more fluently in formal situations in fact I started applying phrases from interviews to my own professional life and it really helped me sound more polished and confident what I like about interviews is that you get to hear people from different backgrounds and industries speak in their own way some people speak quickly others more slowly and they
often share a lot of insightful Ideas this variety helps you get used to different speaking speeds and accents which will make it easier to understand English speakers in any setting another tip I want to share is to set aside time each day to Simply listen to English even if you don't feel like you're learning a lot sometimes just sitting and listening to something in English even if you're not fully concentrating will help your brain get used to the sounds and rhythms of the language it's Kind of like muscle memory the more you practice listening the
more you build that skill so don't feel bad if you're listening and you don't understand everything the important thing is that you're listening consistently and over time your understanding will improve incorporating English listening into your daily life doesn't have to be difficult or boring there are countless ways to make learning fun and if you Build listening Habits Like These you'll see Improvement in no time just remember the key is consistency by listening to real life stories conversations and even interviews in English you're not just passively absorbing information you're actively improving your fluency vocabulary and comprehension
skills keep practicing stay patient with yourself and you'll def I'm so happy to see you are still With me let's take things even further there's so much to learn and the deeper you dive into these listening habits the better your fluency will get I'll share even more ideas and personal stories that have made a huge difference in my own Learning Journey one thing that I found incredibly helpful is practicing active listening active listening means fully concentrating on what's being said rather than passively hearing words it Requires your full attention so you're not just letting the
words wash over you for example I remember when I first started practicing active listening with English podcasts at first it was challenging because I was used to just letting my brain passively absorb things while multitasking but when I started focusing only on the audio making sure I understood every word my comprehension improved so much faster this also helped me pay attention To sentence structure the tone of the speaker and the way certain words were used in specific contexts I encourage you to practice this kind of listening you could pick a short audio clip or a
podcast episode that interests you and just sit there and listen to it carefully try not to check your phone or do anything else while you're listening the first time you do it it might feel a little uncomfortable but as you continue to do This you'll get used to the concentration required and you'll start understanding more trust me it's worth it now I'll tell you about a technique that helped me improve both my listening and speaking skills shadowing shadowing is a practice where you listen to a speaker and try to repeat what they say exactly as
they say it it's almost like you're shadowing their voice I started doing this with short Videos of native speakers like interviews or news broadcasts I would listen to a sentence pause the video and then try to repeat it as closely as possible it was tough at first but over time I noticed huge improvements in my pronunciation and listening comprehension I particularly recommend shadowing for Learners who want to improve their accent and fluency in real conversations it's an amazing way to not Only understand what's being said but also get the rhythm of how sentences are constructed
for example in a podcast or video the speaker might say something quickly and if you can repeat it at the same speed and with the same tone you're training your brain to listen and produce language at a natural pace I remember when I first started shadowing it felt like I was speaking too fast and struggling to catch up but As I continued practicing I found myself catching the right Rhythm and Pace more easily next up I'd like to share another habit that can really elevate your listening skills listening while doing something else now before you
get concerned that multitasking isn't helpful hear me out it's not about splitting your attention between two things that are unrelated but rather about using English listening in the background as part of your Routine this helps integrate English more naturally into your day-to-day life I'm sure you've heard of the saying you learn best when you don't realize you're learning well that's what Listening to English while cooking cleaning or even exercising can do for you for example I've made a habit of listening to podcasts while I do household chores like washing dishes or organizing my room I
know it sounds simple but this kind of listening really sticks because You're absorbing language in a casual real world setting the key is to choose content that isn't too difficult you don't want to be focusing too hard on understanding every word the goal is to expose yourself to as much English as possible while you're doing something else over time you'll find yourself picking up more words and phrases even if you're not consciously trying to learn them this method works wonders When you're just starting out with listening practice I remember when I first began incorporating this
habit I started noticing that I could understand a lot of what I was hearing even if I wasn't fully paying attention it's almost like the language becomes part of your daily environment which in turn makes it easier to absorb and remember speaking of daily environment let's not forget about the power of real world interactions as much as I love Listening to podcasts audiobooks and videos there's no replacement for speaking with real people even if you're just chatting with a friend or practicing with a language exchange partner these conversations push you to think on your feet
and use what you've learned in a practical context I personally made it a goal to have a conversation in English at least once a day even if it was a short one in the beginning I was nervous I worried about Making mistakes or not understanding everything but the more I practiced the more confident I became I began to feel comfortable with not understanding every word it's okay if you don't get everything the goal is to communicate and build confidence with each convers ation I gained more understanding of different accents and speaking Styles and that made
my listening skill stronger as well a fun story I want to share I remember a time when I had a Conversation with an English speaker who used a lot of idioms I didn't understand all of them but as the conversation went on I started catching on to the meaning of these expressions from the context the more I listen to how they use the idioms the more I was able to guess what they meant without needing a trans ation this experience taught me that listening isn't just about understanding words but also about interpreting the meaning from
Context another thing that helped me with listening was to expose myself to various accents English is spoken in many different countries and each country has its own accent I used to focus only on American English but over time I realized that I needed to listen to British Australian Canadian and even Indian English to get a better grasp of the language these accents can be tricky but they offer valuable practice in Understanding different speech patterns I made a habit of watching news programs from different countries listening to interviews with people from diverse backgrounds and even using
apps that provide content in different English accents it's tough at first but once you get used to it you'll be able to understand a much broader range of English speakers for instance I found British English to be challenged at first Especially with words like schedule or advertisement which are pronounced differently but now I feel much more confident in understanding both British and American English as you can see there are endless ways to integrate English listening into your life the important thing is to make it a habit even if it's just a few minutes every day
whether you're listening to podcasts watching videos engaging in conversations or even Listening listening while multitasking the key is consistency and variety the more you listen the better your skills will become keep practicing and don't be afraid to push yourself with more challenging content with time your listening ability will improve and you'll find yourself more confident in both understanding and speaking English I'm glad you're still with me let's dive even deeper because there's so much more to Explore improving your English listening skills is a journey and the more you put in the more you get out
I'll share even more techniques and personal stories to keep you engaged and motivated now let's talk about the importance of listening to real life situations one of the best ways to improve listening is to expose yourself to conversations and stories that happen in everyday life in my own experience I found that the more I listen to real Conversations the more I was able to understand how people speak in different settings with different speeds and tones this made me more comfortable in all kinds of situations for example I had a friend Sam who would always talk
in a very casual and fast way using slang words at first it was a struggle to understand him because his speech was so quick and he often used phrases I didn't know but I didn't give up I listened to him regularly and asked him to repeat words or explain certain Expressions I didn't understand over time I started catching more and more of the words and eventually I could understand his full sentences without needing him to repeat anything it was in these moments that I realized how important it is to listen to the way people actually
speak in real situations podcasts are great but hearing natural speech from real people Especially with different accents and speaking Styles really opens up a new level of understanding for example when I traveled to the UK I thought my listening skills were pretty good but the first time I heard a group of people chatting in a cafe I realized I had so much more to learn they spoke quickly and used slang and expressions I hadn't come across in my usual Learning Materials but it was such a great learning experience because I was forced To think quickly
and pick out the important words in each sentence listening to the real life situations also helps you understand cultural nuances and how people use language in different social contexts for instance when you listen to English speakers in a professional setting you'll notice the language they use is more formal and structured but when you listen to friends or family talking it's much more informal and Relaxed this difference in tone and vocabulary is something that can be really useful when you're learning how to speak more naturally in different situations let's take a step further and discuss the
importance of developing your vocabulary while listening vocabulary plays a huge role in improving your listening skills the more words you know the easier it becomes to understand what's being Said however there's a tricky part about listening often speakers use words in ways you might not expect or they'll use new vocabulary that you haven't learned yet a technique I found helpful for learning new vocabulary while listening is to focus on context for example when I listened to a podcast about health and fitness I heard a lot of new words related to nutrition and exercise at first
I didn't know what some words meant but I kept listening and used the Context of the conversation to guess their meaning in one episode they mentioned macronutrients which was a new word to me but by listening to how they were talking about food and nutrition I could guess that it had something to do with the type of nutrients in food this technique called contextual guessing is one of the most effective ways to learn new words while listening it might take a little longer Than looking up words in a dictionary but it allows you to learn
vocabulary in a more natural and meaningful way this is exactly what happens in real conversations people often don't stop and explain words so you have to rely on context to figure them out it's a skill that becomes stronger the more you practice it I also want to talk about something that often gets overlooked the importance of listening for specific information sometimes when we're Listening to something we try to understand every single word but that's not always necessary when I started focusing on listening for specific details like dates names or main points I found that I
could understand more of what was going on for instance during an interview podcast asked I listened to with an entrepreneur I didn't try to catch every word they said instead I focused on the key pieces of information The names of companies they mentioned their goals and the strategies they used this strategy made my listening practice much more manageable and less stressful it's a great way to make listening feel less overwhelming and more purposeful one way to practice this is by picking a specific piece of information you want to focus on before you listen for example
if you're listening to a podcast about travel you Might focus on the places the speakers mention or if you're listening to a business related podcast you could pay attention to the advice they give on growing a company by setting a goal for your listening you help train your brain to focus on the important details rather than trying to catch everything another great tip is to use transcriptions I know it's not always possible to find a transcript of every podcast or video you Listen to but when you do it can be incredibly helpful I've used transcriptions
in the past to improve my listening skills I would listen to a podcast episode and then read the transcript to see if I missed anything this helped me identify words or phrases I didn't catch and gave me a chance to practice those words again I also found that going back and listening to the same episode multiple times s helped me improve the first time I would focus on getting the general meaning but on the second or third listen I would focus on the details I would stop the audio every now and then to repeat phrases
that I didn't quite understand the first time this kind of focused listening made a big difference in my ability to retain new information and words listening to different types of content is another great way to improve your Skills it's easy to get comfortable with one type of material like podcasts or videos but if you only stick to one source you'll miss out on a lot of learning opportunities for example I found that listening to audiobooks really helped me with my listening comprehension I would listen to the books while walking or commuting and it felt like
I was learning and enjoying a story at the same time plus audiobooks are usually clear and easy to understand Which makes them a great tool for intermediate Learners if you're feeling confident with podcasts try branching out into radio shows or Ted Talks these are slightly more challenging but also provide valuable exposure to different accents speech speeds and topics they're also a great way to hear how professional speakers present information which will help you develop your listening skills for more formal Situations lastly I want to mention that listening to something repeatedly is completely okay sometimes you
might feel frustrated if you don't understand something the first time but that's part of the learning process it's normal to need several tries before you really understand everything in fact the more you listen to the same material the more familiar it becomes this repetition builds your listening muscles just like lifting Weights build strength all of these habits I've shared with you today active listening shadowing listening while multitasking learning vocabulary in context and focusing on specific details have been key for me in improving both my listening and speaking skills by sticking to these habits and practicing
regularly you'll see real progress
