the beach there's truly nothing peaceful like it sipping a margarita on the sand feels like pure Bliss but the unsettling truth is that you never know what might be hidden beneath the waves the shore can surprise you with all sorts of strange finds and in this episode we'll dive into some of the weirdest things people have discovered washed up on the beach so let's jump in and explore these bizarre Treasures from the sea massive Driftwood when you think of things washing up on the beach a gigantic tree probably isn't what comes to mind but that's
exactly what beachgoer Philip lochman found during a stroll along the coast in laush Washington back in 2010 on the morning of April 5th he came across a massive tree trunk resting on the sand it turns out it wasn't technically a tree but a huge piece of Driftwood called called a drift log this enormous log likely came from Western red cedar Douglas fur or Sitka Spruce it was so big that anyone standing next to it looked tiny in comparison while no one officially measured it trees like this in the nearby Forest can range from 5 to
10 ft in diameter and reach Heights of up to 200 ft that's one seriously massive object to have washed ashore so how did this giant log make its way to the beach the answer lies with Mother Nature in the Pacific Northwest giant trees like these line the slopes of the Region's temperate rainforests during powerful winter storms strong winds can knock down trees and send them into rivers which eventually carry them out to sea even heavy rain can cause rivers to flood and sweep away vulnerable trees sending them tumbling down like dominoes Kinder Surprise the ocean
isn't always as harsh as we think sometimes it can be surprisingly generous in 2017 the German waden Sea Island of langa received a colorful surprise when thousands of plastic Kinder Surprise eggs washed up on the beach the eggs likely came from a Danish container ship that lost some of its cargo during a big storm as you can imagine local kids were thrilled with the unexpected treasure and were more than happy to help with the cleanup especially since they got to keep a few eggs for themselves good thing the shipment didn't end up on a US
Beach though because Kinder Surprise eggs have been banned there since the 1930s sorry American kids every year about 10,000 shipping containers are lost at sea adding to the growing problem of plastic waste in the ocean one of the most famous incidents happened in 1992 when a shipment of 28,000 rubber ducks was lost during its Journey from Hong Kong to the US these bright yellow ducks are still showing up today with some being found as far away as Hawaii and Australia interestingly these friendly floaties have helped scientists track ocean currents so at least they there's a
silver lining to this quirky accident ice balls when you think of the beach snow is probably the last thing that comes to mind unless you're from a small town in Siberia that is in November 2016 people from the Gulf of OB in Western Siberia were amazed to find the shoreline covered in thousands of perfectly formed ice balls these snowballs ranged in size from as small as tennis balls to some that were 3 ft across and weighed up to 50 lb words spread quickly and soon people were sitting on them dogs were playing among them and
videos of the icy objects covering 11 Mi of beach popped up online did a massive hail storm hit overnight were these perfect circles a sign of alien life sadly no the ice balls had actually formed over 2 weeks due to a rare environmental process small pieces of ice formed in the freezing air and were rolled around by the wind and water as they got tossed about in the shallow frozen water they grew bigger and rounder eventually landing on the shore it was almost like mother nature was gearing up for an epic snowball fight this unusual
find certainly gave a new meaning to the term beach balls ambergis imagine this you're enjoying a romantic walk on the beach when suddenly a terrible smell hits you curious you follow the scent thinking you'll find a dead fish but what you discover is something completely different in 2016 a couple in Lancashire UK found a grayish rubbery Mass the size of a rugby ball they describ the smell as a mix between squid and farm animal manure yummy right you might wonder who would want to pick up something so disgusting but here's the twist that smelly blob
earned them a whopping $70,000 this foul looking object weighing 1.57 kg was actually a lump of solidified whale vomit called Amber grease believe it or not this rare substance comes from sperm whales and is used used in the perfume industry to help scents last longer so next time you Spritz on your favorite fragrance you might just be wearing whale vomit purple blob not everything that washes up on the beach is easy to explain and this next Discovery even had scientists puzzled in July 2017 a beachgoer at Leo cillo State Park in Malibu came across something
that was both fascinating and a little gross partly buried in the sand ious they snapped a photo and posted it on Reddit hoping someone could identify the strange white and purple blob which looked like a decaying organ from a large sea creature the unidentified lump weighed around 7 lb and was about 5 in wide many people guessed it was a sea hair a large type of sea slug that can weigh up to 30 lb but Greg Rouse a marine biology professor at the University of California wasn't convinced he pointed out that sea hairs are soft
while this thing had a visible rim after taking a closer look he thought it might be a plur brancha calorica also known as a side Gill which is another type of sea slug usually found at depths of 10 to 1,200 ft another possibility was the keyhole Limpet which can grow up to 5 in and has a small shell on the side of its body whatever it was scientists agreed on one thing it was definitely dead the round purple parts were likely its guts pushing out due to bloating The Monto monster if you've been around the
internet for a while you might have seen this image before it's a pretty gross photo that claims to show a real sea monster that supposedly washed up on Ditch Plains a popular surfing beach in Monto back in July 2008 The Story Goes that Jenna huitt and her friends Rachel Goldberg and Courtney fruen spotted the strange carcass at the end of Long Island New York and quickly took a photo before posting it online naturally the image of this bloated doglike creature with a beak stirred up a ton of speculation what was this so-called montalk monster and
where did it come from some wild theories suggested it was an escaped mutant from a secret lab or even an inbred Pitbull from the gates of hell but nobody could agree on what they were actually seeing before anyone could get a good look the monok monster mysteriously disappeared according to huitt the carcass was moved to someone's backyard but she wouldn't say who or where this strange Vanishing act LED some people to think it was all a hoax While others claimed it was just a raccoon that had lost its fur thanks to the waves over a
decade later the mon monster has turned into a real urban legend and it seems we might never uncover the truth what do you think about The Monto monster is it a creature from the deep or just a big publicity stunt if you have any urban legends from your hometown that have made a splash online or in your local community feel free to share them in the comments below I might even highlight some of my favorites and while you're at it don't forget to hit the like subscribe and little bell icons to stay updated on more
weird and wacky stories like this one go on show some love to The Monto monster hairy giant the deep sea is so mysterious and unexplored that it's easy to imagine real life sea monsters lurking below and when one washes up on your local Beach it's hard not to believe it in May 2018 people visiting a beach in the Philippine province of Oriental Muro were stunned by what they found lying in the shallow Waters the creature about the size of a truck and giving off a foul smell that made everyone gag was quickly nicknamed the globster
even though it was clearly dead and had been for a while no one could figure out what this huge hairy Mass was it looked like a giant soggy Old English sheep dog eventually a fishery law Enforcer named Vox kusada was brought in to collect DNA samples and the truth turned out to be a little less exciting than people hoped kusada confirmed that the creature was actually the decaying carcass of a 20 foot long Bine whale likely hit by a boat the hairlike strands covering its body were just decomposed muscle fibers that gave it a strange
sea Yeti appearance isn't nature amazing boy oh boy in August 2015 the the gravel family was enjoying a day out at the seaside in bu Port Wales when they noticed a large round object in the distance curious they decided to take a closer look when they reached it they were surprised to find a giant buoy covered in colorful goose neck Barnacles that had washed ashore it looked old and the kids had fun posing for pictures in front of it and even picking off some of the little Barnacles afterward the family went home not thinking much
more about their strange Discovery but just 5 days later they heard some surprising news officials from pem Country Park posted online that the Coast Guard had found an unexploded US military mine from World War II on bu Port Beach the exact spot where the gravels had been the beach authorities called in the bomb squad and the mine was safely detonated in a controlled explosion at the nearby Harbor it turns out the gravels had a lucky escape and they promised to be more careful next time they came across anything unusual on the beach double-headed dolphin among
all the weird and wonderful creatures in the ocean dolphins are some of the most beloved these highly social and intelligent animals always seem to sport a cheeky grin however in August 2014 a dolphin that washed ashore in ismir on turkey's West Coast gave anyone who saw it quite a scare the reason it had two heads the conjoined corpse was discovered by turgle metton a gym teacher on holiday in turkey and his photos quickly made waves on the internet the dolphin was about a year old and nearly a meter long with fully formed eyes on just
one of its heads thankfully this wasn't the result of some wild experiment from a secret lab trying to create two-headed Monsters the unusual creature was simply born that way and likely died from natural causes while conjoined twins are relatively common in humans and can occur in various animals like reptiles birds and amphibians this kind of abnormality is extremely rare in Wild mammals between 1681 and 2006 only 19 cases of two-headed wild mammals were recorded and this Turkish dolphin is only the fifth known case of conjoined twins among Dolphins since conjoined twins usually don't survive in
the womb it's still unclear how often this happens in Dolphins research biologist Kelly denil estimates that the rate of conjoined twins in marine mammals is less than 1% making this double-headed dolphin an incredibly rare find mysterious pipes the British Coast may not be known for mysterious sea monsters but it has still seen its fair share of unusual objects wash up on its Shores one of the strangest discoveries happened in August 2017 when a collection of 12 enormous pipe segments suddenly appeared on the norfol coast at Winterton and sea paling at first locals were baffled about
how such massive objects ended up on the sunny beaches did they just fall from the sky in some weird accident each pipe was about 8 ft in diameter and the longest one measured an astonishing 1,574 ft that's nearly five times longer than Big Ben it turned out that these pipes had come loose while being towed to Algeria for a big project and somehow floated all the way to the norfol coast where they washed ashore in bunches as curious locals gathered to see the strange sight the maritime and Coast Guard agency reassured everyone that the pipes
POS no risk of pollution eventually they were moved offshore and towed to Norway leaving behind only a bizarre memory of their unexpected visit huge eyeball one of the most bizarre finds to ever wash up on a beach was discovered in Florida in 2012 no surprise there a man walking along pompo Beach got quite the shock when he looked down and saw a giant eyeball staring back at him thankfully instead of poking it to see what would happen he he decided to hand it over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission FWC leaving everyone with one
burning question where did it come from the softball-sized eye looked like it could have belonged to a real life Cyclops and early guesses suggested it might be from a giant squid or maybe even a whale but after a closer look experts noticed small bones around the eye which ruled out a squid since their eyes are mostly soft tissue as speculation swirled online the FWC finally made an unexpected announcement the eye belonged to a swordfish who knew swordfish could have such huge eyes the FWC also mentioned that finding just an eyeball by itself was unusual maybe
there's a poor swordfish out there still searching for its missing eye starfish massacre in March 2018 beachgoers in Ramsgate Kent UK were shocked to find their local stretch of sand covered in tiny bones as they got closer they realized that things weren't as scary as they first seemed but they were still pretty strange an entire galaxy of starfish had washed up on the beach lying stranded and still as if they had fallen from the sky starfish usually hang out in coastal Waters to Feast on muscle beds but this beach suddenly became home to hundreds of
thousands of them what happen researchers from the marine conservation Society a British nonprofit org organization explained this unusual event by noting that in Shallow Seas temperatures can drop near or below freezing this makes sea animals like starfish sluggish and more likely to be swept ashore by rough waves the mass stranding was linked to a combination of a huge cold wave known as the beast from the East and Stor Emma both of which hit British coastlines in 2018 the kind-hearted people who found the stranded starfish quickly banded together to return as many of the poor creatures
to the ocean as they could luckily experts say that this dramatic incident won't have much impact on the starfish population overall because they reprodu so quickly those little stars are quite the naughty Bunch whiskey Galore let's take a trip back to February 5th 1941 when the people living on an island off the coast of Scotland hit the jackpot that morning the trade ship SS politician was making its way North past the outer hdes heading to Kingston Jamaica and New Orleans but rough weather threw the ship off course and despite the crew's best efforts to regain
control it ended up sinking on hidden sandbanks near rosanes point on the aisle of Aris the ship was loaded with all sorts of goods from cotton to medicines and biscuits but it's most famous for its treasure in hold number five a whopping 264,000 bottles of scotch whiskey as news spread about the Shipwreck excited Islanders rushed to the beach where they found thousands of bottles of the beloved drink washed ashore by the time the authorities declared that the whiskey wasn't free for the taking since it was meant for the United States and no Duty had been
paid around 24,000 bottles had already been unofficially salvaged to prevent any more treasure hunting the ship's Hull was dynamited but occasionally a bottle still washes up on the beach so if you're ever in the area keep an eye out in 2013 two of these famous whiskey bottles were auctioned off for over $115,000 cigarette chaos shifting gears from one of Mankind's biggest vices to another a 2-mile stretch of England's chisel Beach experienced something bizarre in 2014 a massive Hall of cigarettes a 40ft long shipping container filled with around 11 million cigarettes weighing a whopping 40 tons
washed up on axou beach in Devon while countless packets scattered along the British coastline the Danish cargo ship svendborg marisk was sailing around Europe's Atlantic Coast in February on its way to Sri Lanka when it encountered hurricane force winds that knocked its cargo loose the ship began losing containers off the northern coast of France due to 30ft waves and 60 knot winds ultimately losing around 520 containers during the storm fortunately the shipping company reported that about 85% of those containers were empty while the rest held Dry Goods including cigarette shipments valued at around $4 million
while it might have seemed like a treasure Trove for anyone clever enough to scoop up the cigarettes and resell them for a nice profit local authorities had other plans Bob gager a spokesperson for hm revenue and Customs explained that the cigarettes would be collected and sent to a designated Power Station where they would be incinerated in a controlled setting to help generate electricity so instead of leading to more health problems these cigarettes would help power the National Grid sounds like a win-win to me is it a bird or a plane the ocean is so huge
and mysterious that it feels like anything could get lost in its depths only to be uncovered or washed up on shore over time a fascinating find was made off the coast of Wales when the wreckage of a rare World War II fighter plane resurfaced after years of being hidden the plane a United States Army Air Force Lockheed P38 known as the maid of harle is believed to have crashed on the gwynned coast in 1942 after its engines suddenly failed during training exercises at the time of the crash the pilot 24-year-old second Lieutenant Robert F Elliot
had to land the plane in 2 feet of water less than an hour into his flight after climbing to about 6,000 ft fortunately Elliot escaped the crash without injuries but he later went missing and was declared dead just a few months later when his plane was shot down in North Africa the M of Harlem was thought to be lost forever until it reappeared looking like a ghostly image after being buried under 6 in of sand the shifting water revealed the wreckage that usually lay beneath the beach since its crash the made of Harlock has been
spotted three times first in the 1970s then in 2007 and most recently in 2014 although there are no plans to recover the wreck it was given protected status in 2019 by the Welsh Government after it hidden location was shared online today it is recognized as one of the most important World War II discoveries in recent history and we owe it all to the ocean George Parker bidder's letters here's a fun piece of history in 2015 some walkers on the North Sea Coast in Germany stumbled upon a message in a bottle they probably thought it was
just a kid having a little fun but when they opened it they found out the message was undated leaving them curious about its age after some digging they discovered that this bottle had actually been floating in the sea for an incredible 108 years inside there were instructions to send a postcard to the Marine biological Association in Plymouth England so they did just that it turned out the bottle was one of 1,000 released into the North Sea between 1904 and 1906 by scientist George Parker bidder who was studying tidal currents of course George wasn't around to
learn about this unexpected find in 2015 and he might have been a bit bummed to find out it hadn't even made it out of the North Sea in all those years still a kind person in Plymouth went out of their way to honor the monetary reward mentioned in the message they even hopped on eBay to buy an Old English Shilling to complete the task toothy treasure the ocean is like a vast watery Time Capsule holding ancient relics from long ago even dating back to the age of the dinosaurs in June 2019 harvey wall got a
surprising reminder of how terrifying the pass could be when he stumbled upon a partially exposed tooth on ocean is beach in North Carolina after rinsing it off and taking a closer look wall realized this wasn't just any Ordinary Tooth measuring nearly 6 in across with a large black root the tooth could only have come from one creature the Megalodon this giant shark which is believed to have gone extinct around 3.6 million years ago was a true monster it weighed as much as 10 adult elephants and could grow up to 15 ft longer than a typical
School Bus North Carolina's Coastal waters are known for being hot spots for Megalodon teeth especially in riverbeds called Megalodon tooth Ledges however finding one on the beach like this is pretty rare the largest Megalodon tooth found in South Carolina measured 6.7 in but these ancient Predators teeth are believed to have reached up to a massive of 8 in that's one tooth that would have come with a seriously Hefty dental bill as we wrap up this fun chat our curiosity about Nature's Oddities just keeps growing if you enjoyed these discoveries as much as we did don't
