[Music] what's going on everybody this is Jeff with islandhoppper TV and today I'm going to make a video about things to know regarding Santiago Chile so these are things that I didn't know some of the stuff I did also know find out in YouTube just doing some research and also on Google but that's what this video is going to go over things to know about Santiago Chile in Chile in general so that's what this is gonna be about let's go ahead get started first thing I want to talk about is there's a piece of paper
you're gonna get from immigration at the airport it says P D I do not lose that that is a tax-free voucher if you lose it you have to pay the taxes which I think are about 19% so that's the first thing that you're gonna want to know about Chile is keep that piece of paper that you're gonna get if you don't want to keep it at least take a picture of it but it's better to keep the picture the second thing to know about Chile is there's a wealth gap that's pretty notable some areas are
very poor just like anywhere else and then there's some areas that are very well and for example in Valparaiso there's a place called Vina del Mar that is so wealthy end of the wealthy safe classy end of valparaiso santiago los Condes that is the safe end is where it's classy and high-end and safe when you go into like the central city center you know you're gonna be seeing crazier things that you don't see in the lost khandhas area so that's the second thing you know and that's pretty much Universal so there are safe areas and
there are areas that are less safe in Chile and in the big cities of valparaiso and Santiago and the third thing is this Spanish here very difficult to understand compared to other places in Latin America so just knowing Spanish is good but there's different words here completely different words for certain things Fiesta is not Fiesta and just the pronunciation it's kind of like the accents you know [Music] the way you would say things it's just like the difference between New York and the accent in Texas or the accent Louisiana are just different run CA shion's
and different sounds so I thought that would be something useful point out but you are going to want to know as much Spanish as possible and the number four thing is Santiago in Chile they don't rely on tourism like other countries do so although you're allowed to come here and you know there's no need for a visa [Music] like a prized commodity the big industry out here is mining [Music] and the tourists you saying something like oh well you need my money because I'm spending my money here wouldn't say a tourist destination this I mean
that you won't see many many foreign tourists here most of the people you walk by and see from Santiago or Chile themselves so let that be an interesting point to point out for you guys and so another thing that's really popular to do out here are things to know is Tours to wineries so they want to take you on a tour to a winery that's what it is they say chill a has some of the best wine in all of the world so that's why such a big push to get you to go to a
winery and see what it's all about I want to show you this river that runs through the city and then there's the glacier that you can also go up there I don't know if you guys could see the glacier that's pretty good too another thing to keep in mind about visiting Santiago in Chile is there's plenty of corporations here I've seen a McDonald's I've seen a Carl's jr. I've seen DHL so it's about all of the modern corporations that you might have an account with but you may be used to plus them that you have
not always seen but for the most part major corporations that you're familiar with I haven't seen in Walmart so they have jumbo and said but just some of the things to keep in mind the malls and everything are gonna remind you of any North American city in fact this kind of looks like San Francisco if you ask me with the modern infrastructure or not and in terms of transportation they have a subway system here the most modern subway system in [Music] it works just as good as anything else have buses you can take buses they
also have taxis everywhere and the taxis run on a meter so that's something that you might want to tell them meter or they'll tell you meter that's just the way it goes another thing to keep in mind about hotel accommodations and whatnot is some of these hotels can't actually flush the toilet paper down and the reason for that is because they use some of them with the older infrastructure used one inch pipes opposed to the larger four inch pipes that are used to actually flush hard solid down so things get clogged that's why you have
to put things into trash bin instead of which is kind of weird that's why and from what I've also noticed you can get a better deal I'm renting one of these apartments they're bigger more spacious and more affordable which with all that included is a pretty good deal right so this is $86 the hotels that I was staying out for about $130 a night so I just wanted to show you guys that it might be better to consider doing Airbnb in Santiago or even going on hotels calm and looking out some of the apartments opposed
to some of the hotels and in my opinion this is better than most of the hotels that I've paid $150 a night for in Santiago let me just show you this view I mean I got a biome balcony it's pretty nice place to take it a cup of coffee I would stay here for a couple nights would have enjoyed staying here for a couple nights getting ready to go to one a saris Argentina so wanted to show you this and another thing to keep in mind about tipping so when you tip it is customary to
do about a 10% - so you know having these coins on you elf salad there's a lot of zeros in the Chilean peso to get used to that but I wanted to point that out because 10% tip not the 20% tip that you're used to in the United States and each country has its own different tipping things but that's just how it is here actually about 10% and just some other things miscellaneous things to know about you lay then may interest you Easter Islanders here which is you know where they were up the Rapa Nui
statues are I found that to be pretty cool but it's actually six hours away by it's five to six hours away by airplane it takes five days to get there by boat so it's not as easy to get there you're probably better off just going to Polynesia I'm trying to go there and here's another thing I know I mentioned the PDI form but you don't need a visa to come here so that's pretty good and but one thing to keep in mind the border immigration processing is a little bit more hectic coming in and going
out I waited in line for probably about an hour before I actually got in so you know every country is different but it's pretty notorious if you look up the the chilla the Chilean border situations just getting in and out of Chile can't be a little bit hectic but it's good no visa so that's pretty promising good to know right it might not be as cheap as you guys might think you know you might assume that the food is going to be cheap and everything is gonna be cheap I found probably the transportation to be
the most affordable but outside of that the food you know the doughnuts the coffee all that was not as affordable as I would have hoped but it's all good overall I give Santiago in out over performance it outperformed by arid exceeded my expectations so that's really good and I do recommend you come here to Santiago so far the best South American city that I've been to and my favorite and I am considering it as one of the top cities and destinations to go to if you are a digital nomad so if you're new to this
