[Applause] it's hard to deny how far 3D printing has come once thought of as a niche hobby for enthusiasts or an Industrial Tool additive manufacturing is now more accessible than ever from simple fdm devices that extrude thermoplastic layer by layer to polyjet 3D printers that can achieve a silky smooth finish and amazing details there is no limit to what 3D printing can do but for some people even that was not enough they had to push the boundaries of technology and invent an entirely new method of cooking in all their ceaseless wisdom they took a look
at it and said what if instead of pla it was cheese and whoever came up with it has something promising on their hands when you see a food 3D printer the process seems weird at first because we are so used to eating food that was made by ourselves or other people but chances are you have already eaten 3D printed food I use the analogy of a you know putting mustard on a hot dog or frosting on a cake because I think these are very relatable to people printing is literally just deposition of ingredients so I
think it's something that we've all been in contact with and something we've all eaten 3D printed food now is admittedly much more complicated than just some mustard on a hot dog multi-material printers can make whole custom meals with a variety of ingredients colors and textures the ability to customize the texture of any food drew the attention of the imitation meat industry with 3D printed food even vegans can experience a juicy steak with a similar texture and taste to the real thing but that's just a safe starting point for the technology the freedom of choice makes
3D printing food not just a replacement for the current kitchen appliances but a whole entirely New Concept I don't know if 3D printing will replace any one cooking process in our kitchen as of yet I think it's a totally different way to to cook I can think of examples with myself you know where I would like to see this technology really take off I see this as the one-off meal replacement perhaps but for home-cooked meals where I have my time I like to make a big meal I think that it's it's really hard to replace
home cooking the technology itself is still in its early stages but the potential is there localized flavoring customized coloring the ability to add details to the printed food and all the other things you can do with 3D printed food offer Endless Possibilities that we don't exactly know what to do with yet 3D printed food doesn't just promise a new gimmicky way of eating your favorite foods in a less time and cost-effective way they can possibly create an entire ecosystem of nutrition because we're using software in this process it's as if the machine can have an
entire record of all the foods made for you in the past but imagine a machine where it captures all of your history and it learns some of your habits your favorite flavor profiles taste combinations and textures can all be recorded and that history can be used to customize your future meals software is the part that completes the ecosystem just like a diet app you use to count calories an ecosystem like this can give you a detailed report and insight into your own eating habits as soon as you start to apply machine learning AI processes to
this you can kind of see how how this can how kind of implications can kind of come from this so you can start to learn from your habits it can start to make meals and recommend them for you it's like any other app or you know on Spotify or discover weekly you know it learns your habits have if you listen to so this can easily be applied to food as well it's going to take some time before this trend takes off 3D printed food is slow expensive and too primitive to see commercial use in our
homes and the first food 3D printer that hits the market will probably be more expensive than let's say an air fryer or a food processor but in time the technology will eventually catch up with the plans the researchers have for 3D printed food I think this is coming um you know first in manufacturing facilities than in restaurants than in our homes and I think that progress those first two steps I've already seen like this is already coming um I think into your homes probably closer to about five years out five to ten years out so
will you have to wait until you start stocking up on cheddar and chocolate filaments what's your take on this would you buy a food 3D printer for your home if they become more affordable or do you think an industrialized method like this takes away an essential part of cooking like the human element [Music]
