Today we’re going to talk about something that has been growing lately. But a lot of people still don’t know about it! e-Sports!
So, let’s get started! “DID YOU KNOW? ” Hey guys, what’s up?
I’m Lukas Marques! Hey, guys, I’m Daniel Molo and if you’re a fan, we think you’re the man! Imagine, on a Sunday afternoon, you’re in front of the TV cheering for your home team!
Is that how you cheer? Now let’s imagine, even better, you’re sitting in stadium seats with all your friends in the stadium, watching live. But, we aren’t talking about soccer, basketball, volleyball, none of those sports, nope.
e-Sports, also known as electronic sports. eSports, also known as electronic sports. It’s funny to think about sports and electronic games.
What are sports, generally? You have to run, and all that. It doesn’t make sense.
Even if it looks like something that’s just for fun these days, games go way beyond that. As in any sport, if you’re a professional player who’s dedicated, one of the best and all that, you’ll make a lot of money! So, are you saying that there are people that play and make money for that?
Uh-huh, and a lot. Players from Japan, China, bro. .
. We don’t have to go that far. -Here in Brazil we have Kami, BRTT.
. . .
-Yeah, they make money too. To be an e-Sports athlete, you don’t just sit in front of the computer and think “ah, now I’m playing 8 hours a day and I’m a professional. " “I’m an athlete, Mom, I’m playing sports.
” It’s not an excuse, OK? If you’re a professional you study, you have to learn about the enemy, come up with plays, read a lot of stuff -and do some head banging too. -You have to dedicate your life, bro!
-Definitely. To the sport. In addition to competing for various prizes the teams also have different sponsors.
Big sponsors. And practically every week week, there’s a tournament of some game in the world. In Japan, in Brazil, they happen every week.
A lot. The major tournaments happen in stadiums, in soccer stadiums. They’re broadcast live to thousands of people around the world.
They even have an announcer and everything else. They have the coach, they have those guys that… This thing is way better produced than a lot of soccer games. In soccer, sometimes they say “He scored, but I think that.
. . ” It’s all about “thinking.
” But with the League of Legends they say “no, it’s because the guy started out with that item, so he was able to form it more quickly. . .
” It’s really cool. Interesting. -Strategy, right?
Lancenet’s already at 50% strength. Yes, folks, this is the championship game of “CBLOL 2015,” do you think Mylon will be able to pull it off? Is the champion back?
Look at Mylon’s fire! It’s impressive! [unintelligible] [unintelligible] Now Mylon was knocked aside by Lux!
[unintelligible] Pain is the 2015 Brazilian Champion! But now I ask you, when did all of this start to get so big? In the world of video games, they have always had tournaments.
From those tournaments you had at home with friends or in Internet cafés. -Mobus in CS! -Definitely.
-I used to play CS and I bet my snack and juice. You know? -I never went hungry!
-But the official version of the first electronic sport competitions happened way earlier, I think you guys have no idea. It happened on October 19, 1972. A long time ago.
It happened in the U. S. with the game "Space War.
" It was funny, they chose a nice name for the tournament. The Intergalactic Olympics. .
. Space War. The winner got a really awesome prize: a one-year subscription to the magazine "Rolling Stone.
" Look at that, he got rich! Back then, it was a pretty sweet prize, but compared to the prizes nowadays, that can reach 15 million dollars. .
. -What are magazines compared to that? A one-year subscription!
-With $15 million. . .
-He can have his own magazine. And this world that you’re learning about now, of fame, money, prizes, behind the video games, it only exists because of the games. First, the games with real-time strategy started to stand out, over in Asia.
Like, for example, "Starcraft" and "Warcraft. " Later, here in the West, shooter games started to get more attention. For example, "Counter Strike," which we already mentioned.
But it was thanks to the “MOBAs” that electronic sports started becoming so popular. If you don’t know what a MOBA is, we’ll summarize it with two examples. "League of Legends" and "DOTA 2.
" Beside these, we have tournaments of other games like soccer. -Card games, fighting. With all games nowadays, practically, we can make a tournament.
-This world is just beginning. Imagine a few years from now. It’s because, today, the guys make a tournament from games that were just made for playing.
Pretty soon they’ll start making games to be used in tournaments. You know? -To become a tournament.
I have no doubt that a few years from now it’ll become some kind of sport, can you imagine that? It would be so awesome. You’d go there to see your team playing in the world's biggest sporting event.
It’s, like, people say “I’ll go see swimming, Karate. ” Here in Brazil, right? “I’ll go check out a 'LoL' game over there!
” Guys, this was today’s video. Hope you enjoyed it. It’s a totally different world, I think it’s a new world, a lot of people don’t know about it.
