fellow marketers we need to have a chat if I see one more Mark in the email that's crammed full of emoji parades novels for subject lines a relevant messaging and walls of text that would make the Great Wall of China jealous selling too hard not selling at all not telling me why you're showing up in the inbox violating gdpr and canfam guidelines not following best practices not segmented I am this close to letting out a scream that would wake cthulu and maybe cry and not like a good cry a sad ugly cry that's right it's
rant time Chelsea C marketers my digital comrades can we please break out of this box of writing stale ineffective marketing emails no one want stale chips no one wants Ste cookies and definitely not stale emails the number one qualm I have with marketing emails today is they make it super easy to ignore them easier to dodge than spoilers on social media I can smell a marketing email a mile away includes an emoji and it's not an email from my mother it includes a question mark or an exclamation workk or both like a grammar Fiesta when
readers are going through their inbox they're using their mental spam filter to determine what to read what to ignore and what to intentionally delete they're looking at who is this from and what is the subject line and preview text telling me about this email I'm in the camp of your subject line is actually less important than we all think it is the brand you build aka the reputation that you create through your marketing activities carries more weight than the subject line when you're using all of these elements in your subject line you're making it easy
for my brain to go oh this is a marketing email I know what to probably expect on the inside pass so let's just scale it all back shall we what do we do instead try being a little bit boring keep your subject line short and clear you can flex your creative muscles somewhere else not in your subject line don't overthink it or try to be too cute or too quirky just be simple simple is smart look I love emojis anyone who knows me who texts me who I communicate with in slack knows that I love
emojis but when it comes to marketing emails sometimes we're just using them way too much when used sparingly and appropriately emojis can absolutely add some personality and fun to your email but most marketing emails are just flooded with little graphic faces and I feel like I'm in the Emoji Movie and all of the value you put into the email is lost instead think about what the Emoji is adding to the message and also what is it taking away is it taking up space where you could be expressing more value or helpful content to your audience
so for emojis I say less is more let's talk about the body of the email when it comes to marketing emails most of the time we're promoting something a Content piece an event a webinar and if it's a follow-up from an event or some sort of marketing activity there's usually more promotion right of a piece of content or a product offering right we need to rethink what we're doing here we spend so much time talking about ourselves and we spend so much time making assumptions about our audience what if we focus on talking about them
what if we focus on serving our audience and providing value and content that would be helpful to them first and foremost and maybe there's a couple of passive ctas at the bottom of the email where they can choose to engage more if they want the goal is to be helpful and keep them in your your ecosystem so that when they have a problem you can solve they know to come to you so let's just do that in a way that is short and to the point not cluttered or buried in the email under overthought Graphics
videos and emojis not gimmicky or overly cutesy or punny and for the love of Wi-Fi please stop trying to make fetch happen with your cute pop culture noots let's just talk like humans be your brand but don't forget you're a human just talking to another human on the other end of your email I just got another marketing email and it's a face Palmer I warned you about the Waterworks if you want to escape the echo chamber and join the cool kids then hit subscribe for more email tips from this human and the rest of the
