from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding so let's approach this topic with wisdom seeking God's knowledge and understanding now you might be surprised to learn that the Bible doesn't explicitly mention the word masturbation but don't click away just yet the absence of the word doesn't mean God is silent on the matter we need to dig deeper into God's word to understand his heart on this issue let's start with the foundational principle of our sexuality in Genesis 1: 27 to 28 we read so God created Mankind in his own image in the image of God he
created them male and female he created them God blessed them and said to them be fruitful and increase in number God designed sex as a gift to be enjoyed within the context of marriage for both procreation and intimacy but what about sexual acts outside of this context Jesus sets a high standard in Matthew 5: 27- 28 you have heard that it was said you shall not commit adultery but I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart this teaching gets to the heart of the
matter while masturbation itself isn't mentioned Jesus is clear that lust sexual desire outside of marriage is sinful and let's be honest masturbation is often accompanied by lustful thoughts or pornography use now some might argue but what if I'm not thinking lustful thoughts it's a fair question but we need to consider another principle in 1 Corinthians chap 6: 19 to 20 Paul writes do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit who is in you whom you have received from God you are not your own you were bought at a price therefore
honor God with your bodies this passage reminds us that our bodies aren't just our own they belong to God we're called to honor him with our bodies using them in ways that glorify him does masturbation align with this calling that's a question each believer must prayerfully consider let's look at another relevant passage in 1 Thessalonians 4: 3-5 Paul writes it is God's will that you should be Sanctified that you should avoid sexual immorality that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is Holy and honorable not in Passionate lust

husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife and likewise the wife to her husband do not deprive each other except perhaps by Mutual consent and for a time so that you may devote yourselves to prayer then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control this passage suggests that sexual needs should be met within the marital relationship not through solitary acts what about wet dreams or nocturnal emissions these are involuntary and not considered sinful in the Old Testament emissions during sleep were addressed in Leviticus 15: 16-1 17

status in 1 Corinthians 7: 8-9 Paul advises now to the unmarried and the widows I say it is good for them to stay unmarried as I do but if they cannot control themselves they should marry for it is better to marry than to burn with passion this suggests that marriage not masturbation is the biblical solution for sexual desire isn't repressing sexual urges unhealthy from a Biblical perspective self-control isn't about unhealthy repression but about submitting our desires to God Romans 12: 1-2 encourages us therefore I urge you brothers and sisters in view of God's mercy to
