- In the last year, we've lost forest area that's the size of Belgium. Climate change is a big problem and we're gonna need big solutions. Reforestation is a big solution.
- [Alejandra] Here in Mexico, Plant-for-the-Planet is planting more than five million trees. (intense music) - Natural climate solutions can represent up to 30% of the solution to climate change. Reforestation is the biggest component of that.
Reforestation is putting trees back where they historically belonged. We have lost a lot of forest. We cleared a bunch for agricultural lands but there has been a movement towards people moving in to cities and we've gotten better at farming which has freed up some land to return back to forests.
Reforestation is a great strategy for combating climate change. It's sort of a tried and true method, right? We know how to plant trees, we know how to grow forests, and reforestation is a tool that we can use now.
Trees are basically designed to suck carbon out of the air. Some places trees grow a lot faster. Especially in Latin America you're gonna get really massive rates of tree growth.
The trees will probably grow a little better if there is the right people to take care of them. So local communities are the stewards of those forests. - Plant-for-the-Planet came to Campeche in 2016.
The planting season started one month ago and they have planted 470,000 trees already. (light music) - [Alejandra] We are using six different species of trees. All of them are native, which means we are not disrupting natural biodiversity.
(light music) - [Alejandra] There are people who work here that they live in the town. They get a sure income for their family. - I like it.
