to Wednesday welcome to Thanksgiving Eve everybody we made it you made your own uh hand turkey yet I'm excited man I'm excited it's Wednesday we got Friday Monday I got an exciting show coming up too Monday we have Darren Brewer from carrier 411 coming on the show super controversial cat he's self-aware of that fact and was open to talking about all the controversy and he brought a couple freight brokers with him who used the platform so we got their uh perspective Ive on everything I don't know you'll either find out they're the freight Guardians of
the freight brokerage Galaxy or maybe think they're evil incarnate we'll find out a lot of harassment that company faces uh they um man uh it's it's a fun conversation it's the whole show we did the whole show with him they were out here during F3 they stopped by the studio we recorded it last week it came out really really well I can't wait for y'all to listen to it that will be on Monday but before we get there we got to think about Thanksgiving and as we do let's think about how transportation is involved first
shout out to all of you truck drivers especally those of you who are working through this holiday making the sacrifice so we can all have full tables with full meals and of course you're pulling all that Black Friday Freight too which comes up on Friday but my buddy Lars Ward and he's got a little map here top top eight turkey producing states but my buddy Lis Ward at Kima freight lines as he does every holiday he broke down a little bit about what Transportation during Thanksgiving means and he says here Americans will eat an estimated
46 million turkeys as part of Thanksgiving meals that's about 20% 21% I'm sorry of all the turkey will eat over the Year yes turkeyy kind of nasty like personally the only turkey like time I like turkey is when it's like turkey kalasa I don't turkey pepperoni you got to turn turkey into something else but he says with an average weight of 16 pounds per turkey that's 736 million pounds and takes nearly 19,000 full truckloads to move that around the country most turkeys are raised across eight states from that picture above with Minnesota as the clear
leader I'm surprised it's not Massachusetts I used to live out there state bird is our turkey and um when I used to stop at Freight plus their office over there there was like a mean gaggle of turkeys that would surround your car and like like like that at you they're vicious they're like Canadian geese but with bigger feathers it says Shoppers will also purchase 214 million pounds of potatoes 80 million pound uh points of cranberries are they I didn't know cranberries were measured in points or maybe you meant pounds I don't know auto correct 50
million pounds of sweet potatoes and 19 million pies but how much will it cost this has been a big controversy the Farm Bureau put out this data and they were very proud of themselves they said this year's Thanksgiving dinner for 10 will cost $588 that's a 5% drop from last year which was 4.5% lower than 2022 two years of declin Don race dramatic increases that led to a record high cost of 6406 in 2022 despite the encouraging momentum a Thanksgiving meal is still 19% higher than it was in 2019 they say that you can feed
a family of 10 for $58 and eight cents everyone is calling BS on this well I'll tell you here is how they get the data keep that up there put that back up for a second here because this shows how they break it down it says here you've got a 16 this is what your Thanksgiving meal for 10 is it's a turkey that is 16 pounds for 2567 a 12 oce can of cranberries for 235 3 lb of sweet potatoes for 293 carrots and celery for 84 green peas for .73 two pie shells for 340
Cube stuffing so you're going to get a box of stuffing for four bucks a dozen dinner rolls for another four bucks pumpkin pie mix uh whole a gallon of whole milk so you're drinking water and whole milk apparently there's no like wine beer booze even juice for the kids at this Thanksgiving meal just freaking whole milk and whipping cream I'm sure there's a lot more on your table I know we spent more I can't leave Publix with like a basket just for myself for 5808 but I had to go around the office today and Survey
people on how much they spent on Thanksgiving let's take a look at what the audience says fire crown right here John the Farm Bureau says that a Thanksgiving meal will cost a family of 10 $585 this year how much should you spend on your Thanksgiving meal I bought two 12b birds and it cost me about 58 bucks that's all you're eating is turkey well that's all that if they say the average is $58 somebody's smoking something because I I buy all the food for Thanksgiving and it's at least 250 bucks 250 bucks not bad how
much you all and you paid oh I don't know my wife got 250 around 250 we got a lot of people coming up I'd say that too I mean when you add in like drinks and and desserts and everything no way 58 yeah bring their own drinks bring your own drinks I well I come from a family of four boys and they all have wives and kids now so it ain't no telling how much it is no telling a lot more than 58 you think maybe but the the good thing is with that with having
so many you only have to bring one dish per family oh like pot luck Southern pot luck style yeah so maybe cheaper actually than $58 all right so he's bringing down the average what do you think similar setup we probably got between siblings and kids uh like 15 people that'll be at the house I bet it's and it's all it's all my mom yeah she's ad about making herself I would bet 15050 triple whatever you said yeah how about you is way I personally didn't have to pay anything yeah my food nobody responded so I
took that as a sign that nobody wanted my food but I would say it cost more because I know my uncle's Ry a turkey and then you got to pay for the oil which is really expensive oh damn yeah the bird is expensive then all the stuff to inject it with and the seasonings I just think it's got to be more like I feel like I can't leave Publix with a basket of groceries for 58 bucks yeah all right so we calling all right we're calling bull Farm Bureau Happy Thanksgiving we're down in the space
store we're talking to one of the lovely employees here the Farm Bureau says it it cost $585 to feed a family of 10 Thanksgiving dinner this year how much do you think your family spending I'd say over $100 easy yeah yeah I can't get out of Publix without spending like 58 bucks for a basket yeah I go to all these and spend like close to over a 100 on just myself I live alone and groceries are expensive hey you guys having any Black Friday sales uh we do online we're not doing anything in store but
we do online at the space store.com 70% off 70% off woo to the Moon thank you so much all right so nobody's getting away with uh spending 58 bucks she was eating loans that it cost her 58 Bucks Loan but hey maybe Thanksgiving will cost a lot more for all of us next year there's a lot of talk about tariffs and Donald Trump's tariffs well the conversation Advanced even further because he he truth so I guess truthed this out is that Michael KY are they called truths over there ret truths truths I guess it's called
it truth all right well he truthed this out he said everyone as everyone is aware thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada bringing crime and drug drugs at levels never seen before right now a caravan coming from Mexico composed of thousands of people seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our current open border on January 20th as one of my many first executive orders I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on all products coming into the United States and its ridiculous open borders this
tariff will remain in effect until such time as drugs in particular Fentanyl and Elite and an illegal and all sorry all illegal aliens stop this invasion of our country both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem we hereby demand that they use this power and until such time they do it's time for them to pay a very big price well this Kicked the Hornets Nest especially here in supply chain got everyone concerned got the armchair logist the armchair economists um concerned I asked a crossborder expert Matt
silver from cargado what he thought of all of this and he says look man I see this as a negotiating tactic he says we dealt with this last time Trump was in office there won't be tariffs on Mexico or Canada things will calm down by the time he's in office this isn't a new tactic trade with China is still on the way out and near Shoring will continue trending in the right direction Craig Fuller said if this does go through he doesn't like it either um you're talking about attacking our three biggest trade Partners maybe
you go on China but to do Mexico and Canada could put a lot of stress on the economy but again I'm kind of in the camp that this is just a negotiating tactic and listen why Zero Hedge for example put this out because guess what surprise surprise Donald Trump's not even office yet but when the man rets or puts troths out there people listen because the Mexicans president president Shin bomb says migrant Caravans are no longer arriving to the US Mexico border they said I'm of the view that we reached an agreement with the US
and they're seeking to do so as soon as possible although they have threatened their own retaliatory tariffs how about up in Canada will Justin Trudeau he says that he spoke to Trump in the wake of this tariff threat and Politico reports prime minister Justin Trudeau says he spoke to Donald Trump Monday night after the president-elect shared plans to use his first day in office to slap 25 % tariffs on Canada trau says it was a good call we obviously talked about laying out the facts talking about how the intense and effective connections between our two
countries flow back and forth interesting how are where what camp are you all in do you think this is just a negotiating tactic do you think we go you think all these tariffs come to fruition and what do you think the impact will be this's going to be such a big story and we think about January let's just look ahead for a second look at the month of January Ryan Peterson tweeted this out controversial take tariffs aren't as important issue Global Logistics as the 52% chance of an East Coast Port strike in January that's right
so some upcoming dates some headwinds that are coming our way 115 Ila could go on strike again if you remember right during the election right before the election right uh as hurricane Helen relief was going on the Ila they came to a price agreement but not one on automation they agreed to extend that contract to 115 which is when they'd go back to the main sticking point of their contract automation those negotiations have broken off they're not talking right now so there's a very good chance they will be back on the picket lines 115 5
days later Donald Trump inaugurated an office and as you see from that uh truth that I posted above he says on that day 120 they're going to start imposing those tariffs immediately then of course 129 you get Chinese New Year lot to look forward to it hey before what the truck let's get into the show it's episode 788 of what the truck and on this we welcome the amazing father andon team of Max and Zach suart they're going to talk about the ultimate road trip game supply chain Bingo Highway they won first place in freightways
Freight Tech 25 Awards their CCO Michael KY he stops by to talk about why truck and fraud is its own form of bingo we'll also learn how they're beating the bad guys and why they took home that award I know it's been our top story on here Freight fraud what's the Cyber risk of autonomous trucks and what happens when one gets hacked we got lockton's Joel black he talks about autonomous and AI liability but let's tip the band we'll get over to our first guest is your freight brokers drowning manual Tas paperwork and emails Tai
TMS has the solution with AI power to automation Tha streamlines your workflow from quoting to carrier sourcing letting you achieve more without adding headcount book a demo with Tai TMS today visit Tai software.com all right I have a little clip because this is a returning guest last year right around Christmas time I welcome this awesome family on the show to talk about their product here's a quick clip of the first time they were on here let's learn about the best gift that you can put under your Christmas tree this year it is supply chain Bingo
we got the gentleman who made it and before you even start I got a quick video from you talking about this hi I'm Max welcome to supply chain Bingo me and my dad built and designed this game cuz I want to learn more about trucks and what he does for living on the front it shows you all the different kinds of trucks on the pictures and then on the back it shows you all the kinds of different trucks and the pictures but what they do I hope you have a safe and happy road trip with
supply chain and then go oh man welcome back to the show Max and Zach suart I'm so happy to have you back and what a perfect time right before Black Friday right as people are going on these long road trips for both Thanksgiving and Christmas Mr Junior how are you I'm so good man you know your your son let me ask him a question you are a seasoned veteran right now yeah you're even starting to get some gray hair I noticed you're starting to match your dad from being in cpg for over a year what
what has the past year taught you about running a sort of retail brand a board game like this yeah um it's been really fun uh like you obviously have to put like hard work into it and you want to like um know just dedicate like yourself on what you do you know as I'm as I'm sure your dad will tell you like business doing deals is one thing but a lot of businesses making relationships meeting people along the way helping people out have you started to I know you're pretty young but like has he started
to network a little bit are you stting to make other contacts and cpg meeting other young creators stuff like that uh yeah not really um he's we're focusing on school work right now so we're we're trying to to thread the needle between running a business and being profitable and and him keeping straight A so which he's doing a really good job well I I love the game my family used it last year on a road trip it's actually packed right now for our road trip coming up on uh over Thanksgiving I'm super excited people can
go to supply chain Bingo take a look at the uh the picture of their website you can you can order these but tell tell me a little bit about the company right now what's been going on fill me in guys yeah uh yeah so we have big plans for 2025 so we have some goals we have maybe like three or four so first we want to like go into retail stores and like ask them like if you want to like come into this and like sell these like for example it's like Cracker Barrel loves bies
or like some educational stores then we want to make like a new website because we're going to make a new bingo game with new designs on it so we're going to have like for example like a side dump uh a mafit trailer and like a kind of stoga trailer so we're going to put like some new uh equipment Types on there and then we're going to make the website like make it look neater because that was our first time so it's going to look a bit neater and we also want to find a US manufacturer
to build these because we want to you know represent us jobs yeah so you're trying to have these right here in the USA uh you know you know a little bit how what are you teaching about the logistics side of this Zack yeah so it was uh it was really cool so obviously he had he was involved when we actually had to work with the manufacturer and Design This thing we worked with quality control and then he had this was during Co so we had to you know work through getting the product here so we
worked with uh LCL carriers so we we did uh you know some import export um uh exposure with him as well as uh a big um LTL uh career delivered it so we had to explain kind of the different modes that uh it took to actually get these things to us and it was a pretty long process obviously during covid and man it was um looking back at the rates then it's actually it's it's crazy to compare them to to what we what we would be paying now if we would have imported them today oh
so wait so you were trying to import them during like the $20,000 for like a container days oh yeah yeah it was it was wildly expensive and we had to we had to sit down and talk about you know what that cost and how and really how impactful was and it really affected obviously our our product price at the time too but you know obviously there's never a great time to start it but that was even more challenging during Co how have how have sales been I love the product my kids love using it but
are are you getting these in users hands how are you marketing this out are people buying yeah it's you know it's really just organic um you know we again we try to walk the fine line I mean obviously I have a i have a career and I travel pretty much almost every day of the week uh and so we have to kind of walk a fine lineup between you know not having this become a distraction and but but also become you know allow to be a fun learning experience for Max it's kind of why we're
going into the retail uh pivot uh for our one of our 2025 goals is to to get them on shelves and uh we think we've been around long enough and enough people know about it that we could go out into a retail uh retail Channel and actually um do very well you know I think people in this country sometimes they they cry too much you know they why didn't the school teach this or why didn't someone do this or why didn't someone do that well forgetting the fact that we have the privilege to live in
this beautiful free country where we can do things like start these companies with our kids and we can teach them those lessons you can't expect a school to teach them everything but you as a parent can take some responsibility as well I love this initiative what advice would you give to parents who want to sort of teach their kids a little bit about business and and how it works at this young age yeah don't overthink it uh you know at the end of the day I mean we made it challenging because we had we wanted
to design this thing from scratch we didn't really want to have anybody else do it and I really wanted to just immerse Max in everything from design to you know what these things cost you know cost goods and and actually importing them so that's a little different but you don't have to overthink it and you know there's no there's no better time I mean we we started this company in one of the the most challenging times in in in global supply chain and we made it work it was a little more expensive but um I
would say there's just a little bit of an entrepreneurial spirit and if your child's interested absolutely support it and see what you can do even if it's just a lemonade stand Zach what's the biggest lesson you've learned from doing this that you didn't know when you started gosh um you know I would say just I I think you know just just the experience itself of just you know watching him grow answering the questions I would say that what's what's really interesting are the questions that he came up with along the way and and there you
know kids and we when he started he was 10 uh you know they know a lot more than you think and they're very very curious and um willing to learn so um I would say you know having to take a step back and explain things very complicated things to him uh in a in a manner that he can understand and absorb yeah uh was was probably one of the bigger challenges that we had just to make sure that I was I wasn't just doing everything for him and he was actually able to make decisions and
understand what was going on and why we were deciding to do something in a certain way so max my oldest son is 10 and my youngest son turns eight over the weekend you started this when you were 10 what advice would you have for my boys um they actually do a podcast right now too but what advice would you have for them starting to come yeah um I just like say like you know do what you love and always be passionate about it like like don't do something you wouldn't want to do yeah but also
like put in hard work and dedication because at the end of the day that's what all that matters you know it's people like the impression of kids is they can be kind of fle are there times you just want to stop like doing this or or you want to quit or you have a different interest like how do you keep yourself in the game yeah so you just gota like I I obviously have those times sometimes but you know like family always matters so like you always got to stick with it and like some like
one day like the I won't be this young and like be able to like do these things with them so like take in what you have and you know be like thankful for what you have well hey I love you guys and I love the story people this is such a no-brainer supply chain gift we're always looking for things to get our partners people with kids people with family even if they don't have kids get them some supply chain Bingo put it under the tree this year give it to your business partners and if they
want to do that where should they go to get this game yeah you can go to supply chin bingo.com and it's $22 so yeah very cool comes in a pack of three so it's a great for a family road trip the colors are green blue and red green blue and red I like the red one yeah and stay tuned early 2025 for a new release so we'll be refreshing the the game set colors uh equipment types Etc very very cool guys thank you so much Happy Thanksgiving merry Christmas happy New Year and let's sell some
supply chain bingos yes sir likewise thanks so much Happy Thanksgiving Thanksgiving take care all right what do we got now oh let's take a look at this lady over here see see what I'm talking about the mini faces of constipation mother how the hell they know I'm constipated I wish I get up there and I show how constipated I am I would all over that mother son of a I'm going to get me a phone number I'm going to find out who put that damn thing up there and I'm going to call him and I'm
going to tell them they got very long to take that son of a down or I'll me coming back and I will break the thing granny you can't get up there I'll break me a shotgun and I'll shoot that mother she's all right she's had enough of that we've had enough of her uh and I hope that the the shoe charts over there they don't they don't do that to uh to their family members so you you didn't have an audio thing uh you remember like bamama and he used to torture his dad well there's
a Creator who tortures his uh his mom he puts her on like that was a constipation Bill I've seen the one where like um there's like she walks in there's DVDs and she's like cursing up a storm why is my effing face on there she was the face of that's amazing that's amazing by the way if you want to be the face of making a America Freight again go to wtt gear.com you know he sells supply chain Mingo I sell some shirts I've actually sold a lot of these in the past week thank you all
who've bought some we got the hats in red and black wtt gear.com and hey for Black Friday take 15% off with the code wtt fans all right Michael KY congratulations brother number one let's take a look at this graphic number one in the freight Tech 25 thank you thank you so much how the F did you do that a lot of work for I mean I think I think the first thing I want to say is thank you to Freight waves and the the the freight Tech judges and the whole thing you know a few
years ago there was no there was no Freight Tech category that people talked about until Freight waves really really made it a thing and so the the coolest thing is you know you've talked about your own story being a content creator and Freight waves given you a space Bas for that and like there's an entire category now that gets talked about like like these are real Founders doing real things so it's not it's not really just about Highway as much as like there there are some really cool companies that made that list yeah and so
I think I just want to take a moment and say man thank you like there's a lot of Founders out there doing some really incredible things like Matt silver like Ryan Joyce like some really uh Tom C who we've known for a long time that are doing some really interesting things in Freight Tech and we see it we see it in this list and it's a bit of a shakeup from from years past you know I like I like what said there and and I don't often sort of toot our own hand I'm not like
the most the most braggy person but you bring up a good point freightways really hasn't and we can look at this next been five seven years has really sort of created an ecosystem an ecosystem for these companies and it's done so and it's matured it in such a sense through shows like this through articles we do on the site through instead of what used to be the freight media used to just be press releases Freight waves decided we need to personify people I especially decided I need a magazine Style Show to show people who these
are the company and something really interesting happened all these Founders like in the past C years when they leave their company you know who a Jordan graft is but before we even started highway there were people who were excited about this company and knew we' succeed because they're familiar with Jordan Matt silver cargado because they're familiar with it yeah yeah I mean I mean I think what you have in Freight Tech in particular are people that have really important domain experience yeah when you look at like the way Venture Capital poured a ton of money
into into Freight Tech a few years ago there were a lot of Founders that didn't really understand the space when you look at Matt Sil when you look at Jordan graph when you look at Tom Cur when you look at people like that these are folks that have real domain experience that are trying to solve a very specific problem yes so going back to Highway like why do I think we were successful why do I think we won we we're very specific we're very focused and more than we try our product works it solves a
problem but we really focus on the customer experience we know freight brokers we come from that business you know Jordan paid a whole lot of freight bills um and Freight brokerage and so we really try to think about the customer experience and what they want and less about trying to come up with some technology that tries to tell them we know more than them which I which I think is a shift in freighttech over the last few years you know fraud problem that's only getting worse um I mention it every time it's come lately ever
since that atry list came up and it wasn't even in the top 10 carrier concerns and I thought that was absolutely ridiculous and it seems so out of touch but it doesn't really surprise me this industry we a little slow on the uptake with information the smart people are way ahead because they're looking at things like sonar and staying in touch with the news but it can take like a year two years for that type of news to get over to people how how y'all fighting for how you solving this problem yeah I think so
fraud is an interesting thing because um anybody that works in cyber security knows this it's it's Dynamic and it changes all the time like with your your tweet this morning about Bingo it really is like a bingo card man like it's the freight fraud isn't is no longer someone trying to steal a load it's a group of Bad actors somewhere in some part of the world that are trying to gain access to a network whether it's intelligence around around a shipper's network and what we see more than anything now is that a bad actor is
trying to or a group of Bad actors they're trying to gain access to a group of Brokers to understand their Freight Network and try to steal 10 15 20 loads at a time so the whole thing the hardest thing about what we do is being constantly adaptive it changes sometimes daily I'll give you two examples that are really interesting they target conferences really yeah a lot of data on on participants yep so like like the the participants are out there right more than anything they know they're looking for anomalies like these are really smart criminals
that are just looking for anomalies in the way that companies might operate day-to-day so like we see a material change in the data around conferences whether we're leaving like they know our team's gonna be somewhere or whether they know a group of Brokers is gonna be somewhere and then this one's painfully obvious holidays yeah right we see a change around holidays anytime there's extra Transit time or extra urgency they're trying to expose they're trying to they're trying to find gaps and and and points of exposure those are two really interesting things what are you learning
like about the these where are they located are these all overseas groups are they all embedded in here is it a mix of all that yeah so what's really interesting duner is that I mean the trucks have to be here to steal stuff they have to be here but but they're controlled from other parts of the world like I saw a video yesterday right and it was a it was a car stolen in um Ontario California and it's in Nigeria and this is like the Nigerian version of a roro it was literally two canoes with
some boards across it and the car on it and they're just the gangs are just Ro it across the river oh yeah early on as we were learning like year and a half ago when we first started digging into this data and talking to customers um we they they Bad actors that would call our customers and say I if you don't do this I have 50 other MC's and I'm going to steal a load a day from you just to prove that I can and what do they want to not do that Bitcoin or something
um they they want hey I have your load and if you don't wire me $25,000 I'm gonna go I'm gonna go set it on fire right damn and so that's why like we got really obsessed about um about the data and like what is the data point to and how do you find how do you identify patterns that help our customers get ahead of the fraud that's the whole thing what's a pattern that you're starting to see like when you're doing this Bingo and you're like ding ding ding okay Bingo Thief fraud obvious yeah I
mean I think the biggest one is massive changes in carrier data yeah so like one one stat I brought you in October just in October 9200 changes were made to FMCSA email and phone records no way 9200 and so some of those are legitimate right like somebody might you know the FMCSA is trying to do a better job and and carriers may be doing a better job trying to keep up with their information but a majority of those are are fraudulent so we found there were like there was like 900 numbers changed to the same
first six digits same like um and it was like a Sub sub Chicago area code like same for six digits like 900 numbers changed we're like okay this is not this is not real like like somebody's out trying to steal numbers and apply them to carrier KY are we are we too free and loose especially on the freight broker side if you think about it truck drivers need a CDL right y I came from the global forwarding side freight brokers I mean sorry Customs Brokers need a customs Brokers license or some the house has to
have it and everyone who operates them is individually responsible to that broker into that brokerage license we don't do that at Freight brokerages though there's there's unrequired independent certifications get CTB like I I had to get a CTB like my company required it when I got in the business look I hate more government right and I really do but I but I I I can make a case for both sides I'm not sure how solid I feel in this one but what do you think on it I so I think I am I am one
that's going to will never disintermediate the freight broker like freight brokers AR my customer freight broker I think the world needs Brokers do I think we need as many of them as we have around I I don't think so that's what I was saying to the ones that were against it I'm like listen I understand I hate regulation and at first it's going to cost thing but there could be a benefit to this there's way too many Brokers as Kevin Hill always posts that data and a lot of them are washing out it's way too
easy to to start one yeah listen if you're a legitimate broker why not shrink the field your rates will be better and and I think my hope is that like like the natural hand of capitalism shrinks the field that like they're going there are great freight brokers that are investing a lot in technology they're investing in people and and I My Hope Is that the world will move toward those freight brokers that are doing really good things yeah and and it'll it'll naturally correct now I do think it's worth asking the question why is it
so easy to get a hold of like a million dollars a freight both from a freight broker side and a motor carrier side yeah like there are a lot of illegitimate motor carriers out there right you get into this whole driver shortage debate and all these different things we talk about like I I'm not sure that every single motor carrier is a real carrier no we see them sharing we see them we see them doing a lot of things we do see them do a lot and it's not and it makes you there's times we
scratch our head like running running this with Jordan and our team is like I don't trust people anymore yeah because I see so many lies so many lies and people trying to get a hold of freight and do bad things look and that's the bad thing a low trust environment harms everybody especially the long-term extensive damage and it's not even that one load getting stolen I mention all the time it's relationship that gets destroyed that shipper future business that future earning potential that you lose and it sucks now your team does great demos and you
do a great job of guiding this industry people want to connect with you guys and learn how Highway works and how in 2025 they can have a more secure supply chain for themselves and more importantly for their Partners how do they get in touch highway.com highway.com yeah book demo info Michael it's we're startup so pick somebody's first name at highway.com and you'll get us now before the show I asked you to uh to check with the family and see how much you spent on Thanksgiving this year did you get a response I didn't get a
response but here's what I would say yes and I didn't get to listen to all the office responses I'm sitting in the chair there's no audio I missed all this great show um it's different I think if you're hosting versus attending yeah so this year we're attending I still think it's probably easily 500 bucks yeah just on you know what we're doing but um you man $58 that's not a that did not sound like a fun Thanksgiving no not the best one maybe a few TV dinners or like a Mary Calendar's pot pie well Michael

call back almost a year ago a few days before Christmas last year December 21st 2023 to be exact in Walcott Iowa at the Iowa 80 truck stop then Presidential candidate Vivic ramaswami for his campaign did a Q&A which was super cool you mentioned it at the time and owner operator Lee and Leisa Smith were over there and they got to meet Vivic Ramis Swami and Vivic at the time said don't get too busy we might have a job that you need to do well that little interaction over drive says has assumed potentially more significance in
the past week as owner operator schmith is working Avenues to the Trump transition including the Ramis Swami himself now he's thrown his hat in the ring to be the FMCSA administrator here's his pitch congrats congratulations to Shawn Duffy for being picked by President Trump to be the head of the do we met with Shawn 2017 when we were in DC fighting ELD regulations he was our Congressman it's great president Trump picked sha Duffy from the state of Wisconsin wouldn't it be great to have two people from the state of Wisconsin so I'm announcing tonight that
I submit committed my resume to be the head of the FMCSA why do you think you'd be a good kit 30 years experience safe experience in all sectors of the industry we've go out and Advocate and educate anybody that will listen about the regulations and how to make things safer all right let's drop Lee Lee great stuff I invited Lee on maybe we'll have him on next week I'm still waiting to hear back from him but uh very excited to hear what it is and uh another guy invited on was gourd who was on Fox
Business last night he had a really interesting open letter to Vivic as well so maybe it'll be like the Vivic show but in the meantime we're going to meet Joel black he's vice president over at Lockton companies Joel great to meet you how you doing today I'm doing well yourself I'm awesome where where are you coming in from where are you based out of I am out of Tucson Arizona woo y'all set for Thanksgiving you and the fam ready almost we're going out to new Mexico to Los cruus for uh Thanksgiving oh interesting do you
have family over there or is it like a just a vacation we do yeah we have my sister-in-law lives in Los cruus and works uh for the University there well that sounds absolutely beautiful now tell me something people haven't heard of locked in companies what's sort of the elevator pitch on what you and the team do so locked in companies we are a uh strategic uh risk consultant we specialize in risk management and risk financing for transportation and logistics companies uh that's my specialty but we do a variety of other uh Industries real estate construction
but primarily my background is in transportation and Logistics and I do that around the country so you're the guy when a fleet or someone says like hey we should add some autonomous trucks you're the guy goes yeah maybe you should but hold on a second because here is the risk and liability inherent in doing so exactly what is that that always comes up so that's a point like it gets dismissed because it's always truck drivers like especially in my network whenever like I cover an autonomous truck company there'll be like a hundred different comments from
truck drivers who like yeah we'll just wait till one gets hacked and like drove into a building and people sort of dismiss it because truck drivers obviously are are uh motivated to be biased against the autonomous vehicles but from your perspective what is the danger with autonomous trucks well we're entering a new territory right now so there is the potential for hacking and uh and I hate to say this but I I think it's it's too early to tell but between all the technology that we have in in these trucks now between the Els uh
the uh the autonomous software uh there there is going to be ripe opportunity to make sure that that that that the software and the hardware is protected in these vehicles so uh to be honest I think it's just a matter of time and not trying to scare anyone I think it's a matter of time before something happens especially for larger fleets that have very specialized uh um cargo that they're transporting do you think that the the bigger concern here would be sort of hacking it to just steal the freight or hacking it to sort of
use it for Terror to run into a crowd in Time Square or something for typically for cyber type events where you do the fishing uh it's a business uh and so what the gentleman from Highway was saying was you have some outside people from Europe or wherever it may be is they're just going to hold all the information uh hostage uh for ransom and until till they get money uh I don't necessarily think it'd be the steel cargo I think it would just be a pure money play where they're just holding uh all of your
data uh and your and your operations will be at a stand still until uh until you pay to get back online no and that makes sense and and I think it brings up a good point because it's sort of the way that law enforcement looks at this if if you did that and did an act of Terror that would be clamped down on immediately but right now in terms of cargo theft a lot of shippers a lot of carriers a lot of Brokers have been Furious because they haven't had the support of law enforcement a
lot of times it's looked at as a civil act I don't know if that would change because it's it's cyber what kind of incidents what kind of hacking are we seeing in supply chain what what's your group seeing uh it's more the fishing issues where you get access to the email address address uh the the uh email addresses uh and you're able to shut down a couple of um of of the entire operation and uh the the transportation company is escaping uh my mind right now but there have been some recent issues where there have
been some Transportation companies that could not operate or were operating on a limited basis because of cyber attacks uh so and so it's just their operation are held hostage until you're able to pay some type of Ransom and not a lot of Transportation companies and that's why you have cyber Insurance uh there are not a lot of Transportation companies out there that have it because they think it'll never happen to me uh we don't do that much but this is a it's a game for for the outside players and it's a business for a lot
of individuals and a lot of companies and a lot of bad people that are out there and they want is money and they're going to do what they can to uh to to get it man how big of a target has un how like because I've been I've been doing this show for five years and I've been doing a podcast on supply chain for seven years I've been in this industry since 2005 and it seems like this problem's getting worse and worse every year what are you seeing from the data side of this on on
this hacking end it seems like the Secret's out Supply chains are not a bad place for criminals to attack it's a multi-billion dollar industry and I know there's uh uh the FMCSA when it comes to the the autonomous vehicles they're trying to uh be a little bit more hand Hands-On uh but then you also have to figure out who the players are so um and there are there were issues you had companies like to simple who were doing the autonomous but then uh they ended up getting in trouble and they're no longer were I don't
know if they still are but uh but they are no longer going to be operating in the United States and they're a chinese-based operation so you have to look at the companies that you're working with uh to determine uh what the best vendor going forward is going to be if you do decide to do some type of autonomous but this is a big business and it's it's it's always trying to figure out who the best vendors are to help your company succeed no matter what yeah I mean look you look at that and look a
lot of these like you mentioned the to Simple Thing a lot of these are startups with uh Shady Venture ties maybe ties to other countries faking safety test a lot of these companies are very expensive uh space so even like be careful about investing in them be careful about uh being a test pilot for their trucks but what are some of the Hidden risks that like when we talk about these EVs and we talk about AVS what are some hidden risks people aren't thinking about uh it's the technology that's behind those uh the technology that's
behind those vehicles and they're going to be able to get into your ECM I mean they know a lot about your operation and there is a lot of data so when you mix in your vehicle data your GPS data um and then you mix in all other public information that someone can pull on your company uh you can you can get a lot of information I mean personally with me just because there's inspection data out there from uh from usdot I can pull driver information so you so you actually have a plethora of data out
there that you can use to do some bad things unfortunately and I hate to say that out on the air but uh I think people need to realize that uh there is a lot of data that could be used against you uh and it's just a matter of protecting yourself uh you know and and we look at the rise of Bitcoin too and that's how most these ransoms are paid to these thieves their War chests have grown huge over these past couple of months these these past couple of weeks now they have even more power
now they can go even deeper they can bring even more criminals into their fold making our supply chains even more dangerous you got to protect yourself if people want to have you sort of assess their supply chain and do what locked in does how do they get in touch uh go to Lockton domcom or you can reach out uh my email address is joel. lon.com you um what percentage do you think Freight theft goes up by next year Freight uh I would say uh you mean for like the spot Market type you know like fraud
just this whole fraud thing that's going on how much you think it's it's gonna get wor it's going to get so much worse because because I mean right now I mean you're seeing Freight kind of we were we were kind of in recession and from the Articles out there right on freight waves it's we're g to start going up so it's going to get a lot worse and uh and even with Pharmaceuticals uh in different Supply chains it's it's it's it's going to get worse and people need to protect themselves there are a lot of
good ideas and suggestions out there but it's going to get worse uh Jo by billions of dollars Joel thank you so much for your time today you and your family problem thanks for having me Thanksgiving on your trip thanks for Happ Thanksgiving thank you and hey thank you everyone for listening for tuning in you all have an awesome Thanksgiving drivers if you're working through the holiday or freight brokers you're singing Freight through the holiday hey man thanks for keeping the supply chain running the world moving and giving us all the time to sit down with
