Our Story begins in 16th century London England the year is 1584 and Elizabeth the first is Queen of England Queen Elizabeth is eager to get her hands on the new world to the West Spain has already had much success in the Americas and England wants her share of the golden riches Spanish Rivals have found there a man by the name of Sir Walter Raleigh an English Statesman Soldier writer and Explorer also happens to be a favorite courtier of the queen in March of 1584 Raleigh receives a patent to claim land discovered in the name of
the crown of England in April he sends an expedition headed by Philip amadas and Arthur Barlow and piloted by Simon Fernando to explore the new world they reached the coast of what is now North Carolina in July and claimed the land for England when amatus and Barlow returned to England they bring with them two indigenous men named Manteo and juanchis Queen Elizabeth is delighted by what the Expedition has found and names the land Virginia Raleigh is knighted in January of 1585 and begins preparations to send a much larger group to colonize the new land what
the English completely Overlook is that this land they call Virginia has already been claimed by another group of people Algonquian speaking indigenous groups like The Roanoke Croatan and choanoke have been thriving here for centuries they are sophisticated organized and completely underestimated by the English who view them as simple Godless Savages despite this a group of 107 men led by Ralph Lane and Sir Richard Grenville set sail from England and arrive on Roanoke Island in June of 1585. the men established a fort on the North End of Roanoke Island which they call Fort Raleigh Ralph Lane
is undeniably a terrible leader and his actions lead to poor relations with the neighboring indigenous tribes soon after arriving Lane accuses nearby Native Americans of stealing a silver cup to get revenge he authorizes the Looting and burning of their Village the natives retaliate by attacking fort Raleigh this Feud leads to the death of the whirlwinds or chief pamisupon an Irish man serving me one Nugent and the deputy Provost undertook him and following him in the woods overtook him and I in some doubt lest we had lost both the king and my man by our own
negligence to have been intercepted by the Savages hey we met him returning out of the woods with penicipin's head in his hand no longer able to trade with neighboring tribes Food Supplies quickly run low Grenville returns to England for supplies in 1586 fellow Explorer Sir Francis Drake sails by and offers Lane and his men a return trip to England they'd jump at the chance abandoning the settlement less than a week later a supply ship arrives on Roanoke Island and leaves 15 Men Behind to hold the fort settlers from the failed 1585 Colony bring tobacco corn
and potatoes back to England with them artist and cartographer John White brings back watercolor sketches and maps of the area these Works tell us most of what we know about Native Americans living in eastern North Carolina at the time the year is now 1587 and Sir Walter Raleigh has not given up he convinces The Reluctant Queen to allow him another chance at colonizing Roanoke this time he realizes the only way to establish a permanent colony is to send women and children too desperate to join the Expedition he pleads with the queen but she refuses to
let him go she appoints John white as leader of the colony instead in May of 1587 120 men women and children set sail towards their new home remembering the angry natives the last group had left behind on Roanoke Sir Walter Raleigh intends for this new group to establish a colony on the Chesapeake Bay farther north but first they are to sail back to Roanoke to check on those 15 men who stayed behind at Fort Raleigh when they arrive in July of 1587 they find nothing but skeletons the colonists planned to reboard the ship and continue
on their way to the Chesapeake Bay but the ship's Captain Simon Fernando refuses to let them board he insists that they established the New Colony on Roanoke Island instead of going to Chesapeake as planned the colonists do the best they can to rebuild the settlement Governor John White tries to make friends with the indigenous people but most are still angry about the disastrous events that unfolded two years ago a colonist named George Howe is shot with arrows and killed while he searches for crabs in the Albemarle sound these Savages being secretly hidden among our reach
where all star may find the deer asleep and so killed him despite our man waiting in the water alone almost naked without any weapon save only a small forked stick catching crabs there with all and also being strayed two miles from his company and shot at him in the water where they gave him 16 wounds with their arrows after they had slain him with their wooden swords fled over the water to the main in August John White's daughter Eleanor dare gives birth to a daughter and names her Virginia dare becomes the first English child born
in the New World but the happy moment is short-lived the area is experiencing the worst drought in 800 years and the colonists have arrived too late in the season to grow crops John White is forced to return to England for supplies leaving behind his newborn granddaughter white knows the colony is in trouble and plans a quick trip hoping to return in just a few months what he doesn't know is that a war has broken out between England and Spain the queen needs all English ships to face the Fearsome Spanish Armada without a ship to return
to Roanoke white is stuck in England for three years finally John White catches a ride with a privateering Expedition that promises to take him to Roanoke after a stop in the Caribbean he makes it to Roanoke Island on August 18 1590. his granddaughter's third birthday but finds the settlement deserted his men find no trace of the 90 men 17 women and 11 children nor any sign of a struggle or battle the only clue is the word Croatoan carved into a tree [Music] but we found houses taken down and the place very strongly enclosing with a
high Palisade of great trees with court dies and flankers very fort-like and one of the chief trees or posts at the right side of the entrance at the bark taken off and five feet from the ground in Fair capital letters was grave and grow a towing without any Cross or sign of distress I greatly joyed that I had safely found a certain token of their safe being at Croatoan which is the place where Matthew was born and the Savages of the island our friends unfortunately John White is not able to search for his family and
the other colonists on Croatoan Island to the South a massive storm forms just offshore which prevents them from reaching the island the winds blow the ship back to Sea until they have no choice but to turn around and return to England the official fate of the mysterious Lost Colony of Roanoke is still unknown to this day although several promising theories exist one thing is certain had the English viewed their indigenous neighbors as intelligent and capable people worthy of respect instead of uncivilized Savages this tragic tale may have had a much different ending foreign this video
