so how do you know if your YouTube channel topic is too specific and too narrow meaning your channel will never grow very big the answer is you got to do your research and this is the question that I would start with what other YouTube channels in this topic or in this Niche exist go find those and how big are they what is the biggest YouTube channel in your Niche and how big is it so if you go look for underwater basket weaving ch channels there's actually some videos that maybe have 6,000 views or 12,000 views
I don't even know if there's a dedicated Channel if there is I don't think it has more than 10,000 subscribers so now you have to make a decision if you go I want to start an underwater basket weaving YouTube channel the apparent Tam total addressable Market is probably about 10,000 subscribers now maybe you're twice as good as that channel so it's probably 20,000 subscribers but it's not 2 million but if you were to say I want to start a channel around Tech and consumer electronics you go to YouTube you research you find MKBHD you look
at his channel and you're like he's got 18 million subs or 19 million Subs that's actually a good sign it doesn't mean things are saturated it means the market is so much bigger so the chance of you building a 10,000 subscriber Channel a 35,000 sub subscriber channel is actually incredibly more practical because globally there's massive people that are into phones consumer electronics and all of the above so one of the best ways to figure out what channel topic you should be in and if it has enough growth potential for you is to look for other
YouTube channels look how big they are and then reverse engineer some insights and one other way you could do this is go to Amazon and I know it's not you two but go to Amazon and look at a particular topic if you went and you looked at leadership you'd find tens of thousands of books on leadership with 5,000 reviews 10,000 reviews 25,000 reviews if you went to Amazon you looked at underwater basket weaving you might find hundreds of books on underwater basket weaving with 16 reviews zero reviews five reviews four reviews punch line is you're
assessing how big is the market and one other way to do it would be Google Trends keyword research tools like that and actually I know I'm getting kind of geeky so if you haven't watched our class at think masterclass.com then um go to that URL of course it'll be in the show notes or the caption and um check out that class because you want to research before you press record and you actually kind of want to research before you even launch your channel because you want to assess like should I even build this is this
the right Niche for me is it even have the potential to help me reach my YouTube goals if you can identify that it doesn't at the start you're going to save yourself pain time money energy so I encourage do your research on your channel topic ahead of time to find out those insights if you like this clip and are ready to take your YouTube channel to another level go to think masterclass.com where you can get access to a 1-hour YouTube strategy class where I break down the exact system that we use at think media to
