Governance is the name given to the set of policies and actions that contribute to strengthening public institutions, transparency increasing and corruption fighting. A good governance also means inclusive participation of society to achieve transformations that improve the lives of all people. Governance is part of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and of the Sustainable Development Goals It acts both as a goal and as an enabler that provides the achievement of all the development goals.
That is why Governance is very important for UNDP mandate and for the development of all countries. Governance is one of the UNDP's work pillars around the world. UNDP believes that strengthening public institutions and ensuring that they are even more transparent, accessible, and democratic is essential to achieving sustainable development for all.
Good governance is the appropriate framework of standards and practices that make public management be centred on the public interest and on the citizen. Public governance presupposes combating the corruption of civil servants. The Projeto Cérebro (Brain Project) uses the database of electronically public purchases and make cross-references of these databases, using economic filters to proactively identify cartels in public biddings.
The project works regardless of relying on leniency programs, like formal investigation or complaints. Projeto Cérebro (Brain Project) - Partnership between UNDP and CADE (Administrative Council for Economic Defense) to prevent and combat cartels. The project uses artificial intelligence to identify evidence of illicit agreements between competitors in public bidding processes.
Improving governance is about making democracy accessible to everyone. It is about ensuring more transparent policies and institutions; and because of that, better services provided to citizens. It is about giving public authorities the tools they need to work more effectively.
This is what governance does for development. And what can UNDP do for governance in the countries? That is why UNDP collaborates with its partners in the planning, implementation, monitoring and validation of technical cooperation projects.
