[music] All right, welcome to week five. Today we're [music] going to have the topic of breaking lies and receiving truth. The aim of this uh course uh today is that we want to show you that we need to identify eternal lies and replace them with scripture.
What I mean by that is there's strongholds that have taken root in our lives because of the beliefs that we've learned and and and many of those things that we learned were lies. As I've said in the previous uh episodes that, you know, when we have wounds, all the enemy can do is manipulate those wounds with more lies and more lies. And that causes us to have some belief systems about things in our world, things about ourselves, things about others.
And so we need to understand what are these strongholds of belief. We also need to understand what are the common lies that even Christians believe. And then we need to get a just a overview of what the biblical truths are in these situations in these areas.
Then we got to have some truth that we declare over them. Lies often feel like internal realities until exposed. See, the truth renews the mind and softens the heart.
At first, it's it's a surprise. It's a shock when we hear the truth when we've been believing a lie forever. But when we we receive the truth of Christ and his word, it brings liberation.
It brings freedom. So, as we go into understanding the lies and receiving truth, I want you to understand, don't be ashamed. And there's no shame because of what you believe before.
And we can't blame some of the things that we did learn from other things. We also need to understand that there lies a a root in the past experience that we need to to really weed out and let die and stop watering. See, lies must be identified and replaced with truth.
So we need to identify one lie you believe and replace it with a scripture that is the truth. So if you can pause this video and just write what what is one lie that you believed in and then on the next side of it put the truth with scripture verse to to to combat th those lies. So hang out with me.
I'm going to read a lot right now because these verses are so true and and we need to hear the full context of the conversation that Jesus is having with the the people here. You have to hear the whole conversation. So, I'm going to be in John 8:31-59.
So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed him, "If you continue in my word, then you are truly disciples of mine and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. " They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say you will become free?
" Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. The slaves does not remain in the house forever. The son does not remain forever.
So if the son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are Abraham's descendants, yet you seek to kill me because my word has no place in you. I speak the things I which I have seen with my father.
Therefore, you also do the things which you heard from your father. They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said to them, if you are Abraham's children, do the deeds of Abraham.
But as it is, you are seeking to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. This Abraham did not not doubt did not do. You are doing the deeds of your father.
They said to him, "We were not born of fornication. We have one father, God. " Jesus said to them, "If God were your father, you would love me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on my own in initiative, but he sent me.
" Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear my word. You are my You are of your father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father.
He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature. For he is a liar and the father of lies.
But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe me?
He who is of of God hears the words of God. For this reason you do not hear them because you are not of God. The Jews answered and said to him, "Do we not say rightly, you are a Samaritan and have a demon?
" Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon, but I honor my father and you dishonor me, but I do not seek my glory. If anyone keeps my word, he will never see death. " The Jews said to him, "How we know that you have a demon.
Abraham died and the prophets also, and you say, if anyone keeps my word, he will never taste of death. Surely you are not greater than our than our father Abraham, who died. " Their prophet died too.
Whom do you make yourself out to be? Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my father who glorifies me.
Of whom you say he is our God. And you have not come to know him, but I know him. And if I say that I don't know him, I would be a liar like you.
But I do know him and keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. And he saw it and was glad.
So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet 50 years old, and have you seen Abraham? " Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you. " Before Abraham was born, I am.
Therefore, they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. This was a strange conversation. And it was an intense conversation with those that were were challenging who Jesus was.
They couldn't they couldn't pin him down for a sin. Jesus was sinless. They they didn't know where he was from because he was from the father.
He was born of Mary who was a virgin. And so he was pure blood w without sin from the the line of Adam. And here they are, but they're they're they're questioning, why?
Why are you here? What are you doing? And Jesus said, I I can talk to you, but you're not listening because you're not listening to the truth.
You've been listening to the liar. Your liar is the father of lies. You're following the devil.
You can't even understand what I'm trying to say to you because of of you believing in the lies and not understanding the scriptures that were prophesied years ago from Abraham all the way through the prophets. And so here's Jesus. He's trying to get through to them that he's not doing this on his own accord.
If he did, he could glorify himself and that'd be all right. He could do that. But he didn't do that.
Instead, he allowed the father to glorify him. That way they could see that he truly was from God and is God. So we need to believe the truth.
Let me ask you a heretical question. Have you ever felt completely unworthy no matter what you did? Have you ever believed that one mistake defines your entire future?
That's a problem. Let me explain. Many of us walk around believing a silent script.
We we play this movie in our head and some of the the things that we listen or we we're were we're constantly focused on is sometimes unspoken or there's a negative assumption about ourselves that that we believe there's no way I can do this and we put ourselves down. Why do we do that? because we don't see value in ourselves and and because of that we don't see a bright future.
As I've said, I I work with a lot of people that have been trapped in bondage and when they get released, they're like, "You know what? I never expected that I'd have this freedom. I thought I'd be stuck all my life.
" The reason why is because there was their family or there is a brother or a sister and it it seemed like everybody around them the atmosphere that they were in. They felt like everybody was not going to make it and so they are all trapped and so they didn't think they had a future. These are internal lies that we must address.
We must uh first recognize them, identify these are lies and because of that we have these thoughts that we accept about ourselves. We don't just accept them about ourselves but we also ex accept them as these lies as this is who God is that contradicts to what the Bible says and what God says about himself. Let God define himself.
Don't try to define him. And watch out, the world's going to try to define who God is. The problem is that God is holy.
He's beyond us. We can try to define him with words, but not enough words can define how mighty, how great, how marvelous our God is. So, we can we need to not uh manipulate or or or try to conjure up what we think of God is, who God is.
We need to go to the source and find out what God says about himself. And that's by reading the Bible. So we need to have a clear understanding of what lies are.
Today we learn that the practical steps to silence uh the lies and speak the truth of God, God's word over our lives. That's how we're going to overcome these lies. We need to go to the word and allow the word of God come over our lies, come over those deceptions, come over those things that have have deceived us and let the word of God contradict or not contradict but but battle and and and bring the truth of of what God's word is and also what God says about us.
I say it over and over and you've heard it in the uh other uh videos that John 8:32. We really need to get a hold of that scripture where it says then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. It's Jesus who's the truth and he wants to set us free.
We need to be real with God. We need to be honest about our mistakes and and our sins and and and the and our thoughts that we we we've all all of a sudden made a belief system of of of who we think we are and what our future can be. And we need to allow God to speak into those areas instead of ourselves.
So here's how the origins of lies usually have been created. There's many sources. One of the sources is the world and culture.
There's a comparison performance standard that the media and and the messages of of of of books and and schools have been trying to tell us who we are. And so they try to shape our culture. They try to shape our world view.
And a lot of it has lies in it. The other thing that shapes our views is our past trauma and our pain. And these have have have have wounds that have led us to self- condemnation to where we put ourselves down.
The next one is the deceiver. Jesus already explained that that Satan, he's he's a liar and he's the father of lies. His native language is a lie.
When he ever opens his mouth, it's a lie. So we need to understand those sources that have kind of shaped not kind of but has shaped us to think these ways and and believe these lies. So once we've learned these lies, we need to categorize them to to understand what are the common situations or are lies that are out there.
Some of the categories of of a lie is is the identity of who we are. That can be where we say I'm a failure or I'm unlovable. We're we're we're already in we're we're already saying who we are.
But that's a lie because that's not who God says we are, our worth and our value. We we we we try to figure out what what is a value to us. And and some of us think if I work harder then I'll earn that love.
I'll learn that that reward that or that affirmation or my my my family will be proud of me. My my parents will finally believe that I'm I'm something if I work harder and they they they put a lot of hard work in it believing that they're going to find value and worth in that. And that's a lie.
The other lie is is in a category is is is the future and hope. It will never change. I'm far too gone.
So there there's these three categories. There's the identity, there's the worth and value, and there's the future and the hope. And those areas need to bring Jesus into, and we need to bring scripture into it and find out what God says about it.
I want to expose the lies with truth. And and this is how we can do this. I want you to to to see this.
This is what a lie is. And and by saying a lie is and then you can make a statement. The scriptures, there's lots of them that directly contradict the lies that we always face.
And that th that's our weapon is the scripture. There are some Bible verses to combat lies. And here's just a few powerful uh vers versatile vi uh verses uh that you can put in your toolkit.
Here's a common lie. I am defined by my past and mistake. The corresponding truth of scripture is I'm forgiven and new.
2 Corinthians 5:17. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone.
The new is here. A lie is I'm not good enough. I'm a failure.
But here's the scriptures that that that contradicts that. I am God's masterpiece and capable. In Ephesians 2:10, it says, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good work.
" So, I want you to get a a piece of paper or or an index card, and I want you to to do the following. I want you to uh process what you've just learned and and tackle some of the lies that that you've been facing or maybe something you've written down that has been a lie. And what I want you to do is is is right on the top on the front part of that that paper or that index.
I want you to write the lie in big clear letters. It could be for an example I must be perfect to be loved. On the back, I want you to write the truth statement in scripture that destroys the lie.
For an example, I am loved by grace, not by performance. Ephesians 2:8-9. And so, after you've written those on the front and the back, this is what you can do.
You can put that in your wallet. You can put it on a mirror, maybe on the kitchen table or the refrigerator. Maybe put it on the back of your phones.
Put it somewhere that it it's going to be seen a lot. The goal is repetition. And you replace the lie by speaking truth repeatedly.
Like I said, the lies aren't just going to come once and then, oh, I'm I give up. It's going to bombard you. It's going to keep coming back to your door, knocking on it.
But your job is to not open the door and let the scripture do its fighting. Let the scripture be your shield. So it's it's not enough to know the truth.
You must speak the truth. When the lie comes, stop and verbal verbally confess scripture. The act of speaking changes the atmosphere and your focus.
So, as I've I've stated that the we need to to learn today the the the the is statement. Test the lie against the word. As 2 Corinthians 10:5 says, "We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God.
And we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. " Then the next thing we need to do is replace the lie with a truth statement in scripture. So we must be committed to this.
And I want to challenge you to the the battle is daily. This is not a one-time fix. commit to your to using your truth card every time you hear that lie.
Focus on on on your identity and who you are. And I want to remind you that your identity is defined by God's character and your relationship with Christ and not by feeling or failures or situations that you're facing. We'll be going into this next uh part of the video where in I want you to look at the five questions that I'm I'm posting on this video.
Push pause, write it down, pray through it as you answer each question. There's not a a a grade on this. This isn't uh going to be well this is uh true but this is something for you to to really learn and get done to where you can benefit because the test isn't just in college for this course.
The test will be in life and like as I remember going to to school and and there would be these pop quizzes that would show up randomly by the teacher. You're going to have many pop quizzes in your life, but you're already going to know the answer. Why?
Because you written down and you started to study and you really paid attention to this class and listen to uh the toolbox that I've been giving you, giving you that that that that card that shows the the lies, but on the flip side, it shows the truth through scripture. I hope this has benefited you, and I'll see you next time.
