Nintendo created the first ever Zelda game back in 1986, this being the Legend of Zelda and we are now in 2019, an entire 33 years on from that first installment. Over those many years we have had 19 mainline installments to series. From classics like Ocarina of Time to the cartoony and fun looking Windwaker to older instruments such as A Link To The Past.
The point is that this long running adventure series has a ton of games but with that comes certain instruments becoming outdated. Now this is not necessarily a bad thing by any means but some titles are either hard to access nowadays, have controls that aren’t the best for everyone or are just generally not up to speed with the modern day expectations and fall a little behind. In recent years Nintendo have started to remake and in some cases reimagine some of their older games and this has been very prominent within the Zelda series.
We’ve seen Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker remade in HD for the Wii U. We got Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask remade for the 3DS and we got A Link Between Worlds which is considered to be a spiritual successor to A Link To The Past. With another remake on the way that remake being Link's Awakening it got me thinking of what other games could use remakes and with the help of fellow Zelda channel Zelda Lore I’ve created a list of the top 5 Most Needed or Wanted Remakes for Zelda games.
So without further ado, onto the video. Coming in at the opening number 5 spot… The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. Two very unique titles to the series themselves but also very old ones.
These two games are very very similar gameplay but follow slightly different stories. The unique part about these games is that combining both of them together actually links up for a bigger overarching story. Both games were released for the gameboy colour and are regarded as one of the best handheld installments within the series.
Within Oracle of Ages Link must use the Harp of Ages to control the flow of time and within Oracle of Seasons he must use the Rod of Seasons to control nature. These two games have some of if not the most unique mechanics within the entire Zelda series and those two mechanic alone qualify these games for remakes. It would also be so cool if and when they get remade Nintendo include the ability to combine both games via linking them up somehow to give us the bigger story, that would be awesome.
This pair of games could also work nicely for a little duo release, Nintendo could fire both games onto one cartridge as they do quite literally tie into each other so it would make sense. So both of the Oracle Games take the number 5 spot. Now for number 4 The Legend of Zelda Yup that’s right, the original Legend of Zelda game that started it all.
We are not 100% sure how the Zelda team would go about this remake as far the art style goes but put that to the side and to us, it sounds like a fantastic idea. Afterall Breath of The Wild was to some degree a re-imagining of The Legend of Zelda's vision and during development for Breath a remake of the original game was made, kind of anyway. They used this little remake demo game for working out certain mechanics and parts of Breath of The Wild and you can actually go learn about yourself by watching Nintendos “The Making of Breath of The Wild” series on YouTube, I’ll link it below but that’s what got the idea in my head of remaking the original Legend of Zelda.
I think it would be great to see this, nothing over the top, nothing too little just good old Zelda from back in the day and this could present a way to get some of the newer fans and younger generation to give the older games a try. It’s relativity simple but for me it would be an instant purchase as that game is so iconic to the series. The music, the introduction of some long running enemies, items and even areas.
It’d be so awesome to see that game but with the capabilities of modern technology to present a better image of what Nintendo had in mind back in 86. The Legend of Zelda takes the number 4 spot. Now for number 3… The Legend of Phantom Hourglass.
Now this was a split decision between a Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks combo and just one them but relatively Nintendo would remake them individually and we’ve opted for Phantom Hourglass. This adventure at sea was at first, imagined to be like Wind Waker but on the DS. Sadly it didn’t quite work out that way but there is still a fantastic game within Phantom Hourglass.
Now there are a few options for the art style, they could either use the same style as Wind Waker or start a trend and use the Links Awakening remake art style, either works. The only big thing that may need some work is the system with travelling back and forth from the Temple of The Ocean King. Sort that out, give the game a new fresh art style and you’ve got yourself a tidy little Zelda game for the Nintendo Switch.
Both Phantom Hourglass and Spirit tracks could of made this pick and in fairness we’d like to see both as they are both awesome little games filled with lots of content. For one Phantom Hourglass had customizable options for your ship, a remake could expand upon that and make it even better. Not to mention the games criminally underrated soundtrack.
All of that is why we have given The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass the number 3 spot. Coming in at the runners up number 2 spot. The Legend of Zelda The Minish Cap.
All right, The Minish Cap is by far one of my all time favorite video games personally so I am being a little biased here but I do truly believe that this game deserves a remake for say The Nintendo Switch. The game is smaller compared to most Zelda titles but has one of the most intriguing and adventurous stories in my opinion. The game involves a talking hat, a race of tiny people known as the Minish or the Picori to the Hylians.
An evil villain who turns Princess Zelda to stone and releases a bunch of evil creatures that had previously been sealed away, safe from the world. You need to build up the four sword, take out the evil that was released and ultimately take out Vaati and bring Hyrule back to peace. The game is so so underrated in my opinion and there is a lack of ways to play this game.
There is a potential issues with remaking the game due to capcom creating the game but you’d like to think that could have worked around and sorted out. Regardless, i’d love and adore to see Minish Cap remade and especially in the same art style as the upcoming Link's awakening remake. Before we unveil the number 1 spot, here are a few honorable mentions.
Ocarina of Time and or Majora's Mask remade again, only this time on the Nintendo Switch. Previously mentioned in the video, Spirit Tracks. And last but not least, A Link To The Past remade for the Nintendo Switch but with the art style of the Link's awakening remake and just a direct remake of the original SNES game.
Now for number 1… The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword… I’m sure many of you saw this one coming and I don’t blame you. Skyward Sword has more than definitely been one of the most wanted if not the most wanted remake within the Zelda series. This installment came out on the Wii and despite the contraval opinions on it, I love and adore the game to bits.
The game takes place at the very beginning of the Zelda timeline so it’s certainly an important game. It tells a great story, considered by many as one of the best in the entire series, with compelling characters and amazing villains such as Ghirahim. In this game, instead of galloping across hyrule on Epona or sailing a vast ocean, you sear through the skies atop a giant red bird, plunging beneath the clouds down to the surface and taking on all sorts of unknown threats.
A few things Nintendo could improve in a potential remake would have to be filling the sky with more islands, puffy clouds to fly through and activities to do as in the game it’s very bare. It’s really cool and all to fly around the sky on a loftwing but there isn’t much else beyond that. Secondly and the thing most of you are probably thinking, the controls.
Me personally I had little to no issues with them and personally believe it depends on how you have everything set up but at the end of the day, that can cause an inconvenience and isn’t an answer. Giving players the option between the standard controller gameplay and motion controls via the joy cons would work just fine. The joycons are super accurate and would work wonders for this game.
It’s also the only 3D Zelda game not to be remade yet, so it would make sense. That is why Skyward Sword gets our pick for the most wanted and or needed, Legend of Zelda remake. Thank you so much for checking out the video, I really hope you all enjoyed it and be sure to let me know if you agree with the list and what some of your most desired Zelda remakes are.
