generic American host mom welcome back to part two of thoughts on filling out the letter to your American host family at this section I wanted to talk about your home family most letters start out with something along the lines of my name is Bob Mary whatever and I live with my family of and name all the members of the family now remember the purpose of this letter is to let us your potential host family evaluate whether you will fit in well be aware there are lots of different host family Arrangements there are empty nesters those
are couples whose children are grown and moved out but still want to continue working with teenagers two there's families with teenagers of their own probably going to be attending the same school with you there are families with younger children maybe attending Local Elementary or primary school or maybe not even in school yet and there are families with no children of their own there are single parent families two parent families they're families that get that are part of a large extended family nearby and for whom family get-togethers are frequent and involve 10 20 or more people
and then there are families whose extended family lives hundreds or even thousands of miles away and you may only get to interact indirectly or interact directly with the CORE family and indirectly with the extended family so as your potential host family reads your letter they are going to be looking for someone who will easily transition into their particular family arrangement so we want to know what sort of family you come from and what you are excited to be part of if you have always been part of a very large family and you might be well
suited to being hosted by a very large family if you are an only child you might be better suited to stay with a smaller CORE family and if you have younger brothers and sisters you enjoy taking care of you might be well suited to a family with younger children conversely if you have younger brothers and sisters and would really like to escape that during your exchange year it might be worthwhile saying so and try to avoid getting placed in a family with small children it really is that simple what is your background what do you
like about it and what do you want from your year other things to talk about in the family section is how independent are you do you spend a lot of time with your family or do you prefer to go off on your own and do your own thing and we will talk about this a little more in the section on your hometown what sort of activities do you like doing with your family if you do do you sit down together for dinner how often any favorite meals do you play games together what games what do
you like most about this time together do you watch movies or television together what sort of things do you watch do you go out to events like sporting events or concerts how often what are your favorites and what do you like most about spending time with family the things you enjoy doing with your family will help tell me if you would like doing the same things that I like doing with my family anyway good luck
