I would like to ask you this what does it mean to be truly blessed and how does this differ from the world's definition of prosperity also how can we apply the ancient wisdom of Psalm 1 to the complex challenges of our modern lives today we will explore each verse of Psalm 1 to discover the gems that these verses contain let us dig deep into the word of God together so that we may all emerge refreshed rejuvenated and more closely aligned with God's will for our lives my dear friends the words of scripture are like a
deep well of Living Water the deeper we draw the fresher the water we receive the Holy Spirit has a profound way of highlighting the same verses in New Perspectives revealing layers of depth that we might have missed before it's an experience I've been blessed to encounter time and again and maybe you have experienced this too we could spend a lifetime diving into the depths of Psalm 1 and we'd still find new Treasures that God has hidden for us this Psalm just six versus long packs a wealth of wisdom and guidance for how to live a
Godly life in an ungodly world the verse begins with a striking declaration blessed is the man who walks not in the counsil of the ungodly nor stands in the path of Sinners nor sits in the seat of the scornful These Are Not Mere words but a Heavenly prescription for a blessed life the Bible often employs the technique of stating something positively and then providing the negative qualifiers to make the Point Crystal Clear just as the Ten Commandments tell us what not to do in order to live a life pleasing to God this Psalm Begins by
telling us what to avoid now what is it that the blessed man avoids three things he does not walk in the counsil of the ungodly he does not stand in the way of Sinners and he does not sit in the seat of mockers now listen to this did you ever notice the progressive descent into sin that is highlighted in this verse from walking to standing then sitting this mirrors the path that many people may take from bad to worse it reflects a gradual slide away from God's grace a step-by-step journey into a life- centered around
self rather than the Creator take for examp example the story of King Saul in the Old Testament initially he was humble and God-fearing however as he continued to disobey God's commands and listen to the counsel of the ungodly his life began to fall apart he went from walking to standing to sitting in sin now contrast that with David who despite his own flaws sought after God's heart and was considered a man after God's Own Heart it is crucial to consider this blessings and curses are often not instantaneous but gradual as Deuteronomy 30:9 says I call
Heaven and Earth as Witnesses today against you that I have set before you life and death blessing and cursing therefore choose life that both you and your descendants may live so we need to realize that the choices you make today set the course for tomorrow the sooner we understand this the better Our Lives will be and as in the lives of Saul and David those choices either draw us closer to God's blessings or push us toward a curse therefore the first lesson we need to grasp from Psalm 1 is that to be blessed is not
about a particular set of circum ances it is about a particular set of choices choices that sometimes may be difficult as they often go against the tide of popular opinion or even our own desires yet they are choices that lead to life to blessing and to a deeper relationship with God the question for us then is straightforward yet profoundly challenging what choices are we making today are we walking standing standing and sitting in places that bring us closer to God or are we inching away from his divine presence and so my friends the journey toward
a blessed life begins with a decision a decision to follow God's path rather than that of the world now let us look at verse two having started with what the blessed man avoids Psalm 1:2 shifts focused to what the blessed man Embraces and it reads but his Delight is in the law of the Lord and in his law he meditates day and night this is not a forced obligation but a heartfelt Delight the blessed man doesn't just tolerate God's law he Revels in it he considers it not a burdensome set of rules but a guide
book to a fulfilling life notice the emphasis on both the intellect and the emotion it's not just a matter of knowing God's law but delighting in it this delight transforms what could be a dull Duty into an invigorating Discovery just like a treasure hunter takes joy in every clue because it brings him closer to the treasure so does the blessed man Delight in God's law because it draws him closer to the heart of God the verse also mentions meditation to meditate on God's law means to constantly reflect on it to let it permeate our thoughts
and influence our actions it's not enough to just read the word we must allow the word to read us to examine us and to transform us this concept of meditation is not a new idea but an ancient practice rooted in biblical IAL tradition consider the example of King David who wrote this Psalm remember he was a man who knew the highs of Victory and the lows of defeat what sustained him was his meditation on God's law even when he was hiding from Saul in the cave or grieving over his sins his Refuge was in the
word of God he didn't just think about God's law when it was convenient he meditated on a day night let's not forget that this delight and meditation lead to something the law is not an end in itself but a means to an end as Romans 12:2 says and do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God the word transforms us and equips us to do God's will my friends our relationship with God's word is
a true indicator for our spiritual condition if the word of God is a chore for us it's time to examine our hearts if it's our Delight it's a sign that we're walking closely with the Lord so let us take the example of David and let God's law be our delight and our meditation day and night next when we move to the third verse of this Psalm the imagery shifts to that of a tree it tells us he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth its fruit in its season
whose Leaf also shall not wither and whatever he does shall prosper there's a profound lesson here about the outcomes of a life that Delights in God's law the tree serves as a powerful metaphor for stability growth and fruitfulness imagine if you will the life-giving properties of water for a tree water represents the nourishing renewing and cleansing aspects of God's word a tree planted by the rivers of water is continually nourished it has deep roots that tap into a constant source of life this is similar to the believer who remains rooted in Christ and nourished by
his word the verse further tells us that this tree brings forth its fruit in its season this is not a tree that bears fruit all year round but one that follows the natural Rhythm Of Seasons this resonates with Ecclesiastes 3: 1 to8 which tells us there is a time for everything a tree doesn't stress or strain to produce fruit it does so naturally when the time is right similarly a life Anchored In God's word will produce fruit when the season comes it could be a season of witnessing to others a season of overcoming trials or
a season of enjoying blessings it's worth noting that the leaf of this tree shall not wither while Seasons come and go while there may be periods of great fruitfulness and other times of apparent barrenness and other times of shedding leaves so it is with the blessed man his spiritual Vitality does not decline he remains strong regardless of the circumstances he faces in a world that is constantly changing where the Winds of popular opinion blow this way and that the image of a stable fruitful tree is indeed an attractive one in John 15: 4 to5 Jesus
tells us abide in me and I in you as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine neither can you unless you abide in me I am the vine you are the branches he who abides in me and I in him Bears much fruit for without me you can do nothing what a glorious promise we have here my friends to be like a tree is to be firmly rooted continually nourished and consistently fruitful it's a life that not only survives the storms but thrives despite them therefore let us strive to
be like that tree rooted in the word of God so that we may bear the fruits of the spirit in our lives then we have verse four that introduces a stark contrast to the stable and fruitful tree it says the ungodly are not so but are like the chaff which the wind drives away so what is chaff chaff is the husk around the grain it is lightweight and has no substance when Farmers separate grain from chaff they throw both into the air the grain having substance falls back to the ground but the chaff is blown
away by the wind the idea of chaff being driven Away by the wind is a poetic but ominous or cautionary description of the fate of the ungodly it's a picture of instability and a short-lived nature unlike the tree which remains firm and stable because it is rooted in something enduring the chaff has no anchor this is the inevitable result of a life that turns away from God's law and wisdom just like the chaff it may be here to today but it will beg gun tomorrow while death ens snares many this temporary nature is especially pronounced
for the ungodly notice that the Bible often uses farming imagery to convey its messages and this is one that would deeply connect with a society rooted in agriculture consider the parable of the wheat and the tears in Matthew 13 veres 24 to 30 in this story Jesus describes how the wheat and the tears grow together until the Harvest at that time the tears are separated and burned while the wheat is gathered into the barn this image mirrors the one in Psalm 1 reinforcing the idea that the righteous and the ungodly May coexist for a time
but a day of separation is coming this separation is not merely poetic but a stark warning in the New Testament we find a similar Concept in the parable of the sheep and goats in Matthew 25: 31-46 the Sheep are blessed and inherit the Kingdom prepared for them while the goats are cast into Everlasting fire the lesson is Clear Choices have consequences likewise the ungodly will not stand in the Judgment they have no root no substance no anchor in Matthew 7: 24- 27 Jesus speaks of the wise man who built his house on the rock and
the foolish man who built his house on the sand the house on the rock with stod the storm while the one on the sand fell and great was its fall in essence this message Echoes the stark contrast described in Psalm 1 this is not a message of Doom but a call to introspection and conscious decision making where do we find ourselves are we the wheat or the tears the sheep or the goats the wise Builders or the foolish ones it's a question that demands an answer and it's an answer that will affect not just our
lives but also our Eternal Destinies my dear friends we have a choice to make will we be like the fruitful tree planted by the rivers of water or will we be like the chaff that the wind blows away it is a question that has Eternal implications and the time to decide is now the invitation is open to all the choice is ours to make now let's move on to Psalm 1 verse 5 which says therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the Judgment nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous this verse shifts the focus
from Individual to Universal it Paints the ultimate Destiny of two paths one leading to standing in the judgment and another leading to falling away so what does it mean to stand in the judgment and who are the congregation of the righteous one leading to standing in the judgment and another leading to falling away so what does it mean to stand in the judgment and who are the congregation of the righteous to stand in judgment conveys a sense of enduring scrutiny and being found Pure or blameless courtrooms are places where one's actions are weighed where innocence
or guilt is determined the imagery here Echoes the seriousness of Eternal judgment when we turn to the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den in Daniel 6 we see a vivid representation of what it means to stand in judgment Daniel was thrown into the Den of Lions yet he emerged unharmed because he was found innocent before God his life of righteousness granted him favor in the eyes of God and that made all the difference similarly those who follow the way of the righteous as described in psalm one will be able to stand in the ultimate
judgment justified by their faith the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony the congregation of the righteous points back to the idea of community in 1 Peter 2:9-10 Peter describes Believers as a chosen generation a royal priesthood a holy nation his own special people this is the congregation of the righteous a collective of individuals who have chosen the way of godliness who stand together not by the Merit of their works but by the grace of God that has been extended to them and this brings us to another point so shall we then
continue in sin that Grace May abound Paul replies with a resounding God forbid in Romans 6:2 to desire to continue in sin shows a misunderstanding of God's abundant grace and a contempt for the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross however note that Psalm 1:5 makes it clear that Sinners and the ungodly will not find themselves in this congregation their path leads to a a different Destiny it's reminiscent of the story of the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25: 31-46 where the Sheep are separated from the goats the righteous from the unrighteous the goats symbolic
of the ungodly find themselves lacking and are Cast Away from the presence of the Lord the weight of this verse serves as another sober reminder that the choices we make in this life have eternal implications just like in the story of the wise and foolish virgins in Matthew 25: 1-13 Readiness and preparedness for the coming of the bridegroom which is a symbol for Christ determines who gets to partake in the Eternal joy and who is shut out the virgins who were wise had oil in their lamps ready for the coming of the bridegroom in contrast
the foolish ones were unpr prepared and found themselves shut out from the wedding Feast my friends Psalm 1 is not a message of Doom but rather a clear call to align ourselves with the path of righteousness we are called to a life of preparation a life of Readiness a life that will stand the test of time and the scrutiny of Eternity it is an invitation to join the congregation or community of the righteous to be part of something much bigger than ourselves God's Eternal Kingdom my friends as we contemplate this verse let us consider our
standing are we prepared for the judgment to come are we living in such a way that we will find ourselves in the congregation of the righteous these are not questions to be taken lightly they require deep introspection and most importantly action and Psalm ends with the Assurance in verse 6 which says for the Lord knows the way of the righteous but the way of the ungodly Shall Perish this is the climax the final word the seal on the life of the blessed man to be known by God is an extraordinary privilege don't you think the
Lord knows the way of the righteous because their way aligns with the Lord's path This Is Not Mere acknowledgment but intimate familiarity consider the story of Abraham who was called a friend of God Abraham walked by faith not by sight there was such Intimacy in this relationship that God even shared his plans about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah with Abraham this was not because Abraham was special in himself but because he had aligned himself with God's will the Assurance here is not just for this life but extends into eternity in the parable of the
talents in Matthew 25 verses 14 to30 the master says to the faithful servant well done good and faithful servant you were Faithful over a few things I will make you ruler over many things enter into the joy of your lord to be known by God is not just a matter of divine awareness but a matter of divine approval yet this assurance comes with a caveat the way of the ungodly Shall Perish this serves as a final warning in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16: 19-31 the rich man finds himself self
in torment after death while Lazarus is comforted in Abraham's bosom again my friends choices have consequences paths have [Music] destinations the ungodly may seem to prosper for a season but their way ultimately leads to ruin it's easy to be distracted by the transient things of this world the pleasures the power the possessions however this verse redirects our Focus to what truly matters it reminds us that it's not enough to be known by people we must strive to be known by God this is the ultimate goal of the Blessed Life to walk in such a way
that the creator of the universe takes notice not just to live but to live a life worthy of divine attention it's the result of a life Anchored In God's wisdom a life that is fruitful and a life that chooses the Eternal over the temporal therefore my friends let us strive to be known by God let us walk in the ways of righteousness that when our days on Earth are done we may hear those beautiful words well done good and faithful servant enter into the joy of your lord my friends after journeying through Psalm 1 we
have much to ponder and apply in Our Lives May this Psalm guide us as we navigate the complexities of life let it serve as a blueprint for the blessed life a life rooted in God's wisdom a life that bears fruit a life that stands in contrast to the ways of the world and a life that is ultimately known and approved by God may God grant us the grace to live such lives as we stand Guided by the wisdom of Psalm 1 let us commit to walking the path that God has laid before us let it
serve as a compass directing us toward a life that not only endures but also thrives in the face of judgment may we be like the tree planted by the rivers of water fruitful in due season whose Leaf does not wither now to all those within the sound of my voice let us go to the Lord in prayer I want you to pray this prayer with me so that you can have all the blessings of this prayer let us pray to our gracious and merciful god Heavenly Father the creator of the heavens and the earth I
